What happened to Ostapenko, I thought since the courts are playing slowly, she would wreck havoc on her opponents at the US Open..did she just have a bad day at the officeResults from the U.S. Open Women's Singles Round 3 matches on Saturday

4-Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) beat Shelby Rogers (U.S.) 6-4 7-5
20-CoCo Vandeweghe (U.S.) beat 10-Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) 7-5 4-6 6-4
Jennifer Brady (U.S.) beat Monica Niculescu (Romania) 6-3 4-6 7-6(3)

Lucie Safarova (Czech Republic) beat Kurumi Nara (Japan) 6-3 6-2
Ostapenko probably the highest profile casualty. I saw a bit of the Pliskova match - she didn't look overly impressive coming through.
Good wins for Keys and Coco.
How is Keys playing ..any hope that she can make it to the final weekend and break through in the slams with a titleKeys wins the second set sending it to a decider. At 1.30 a.m. we are beginning the third set. Is this what is called super Saturday?

Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with her...she seems very slow out there, not interested, serving table tennis serves (maybe slower) and handing Maria the match.Sevastova seems like she doesnt want to play should have given her spot to Shuia Zhang
should have given up her spot to players who really want to play pova is beatable..Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with her...she seems very slow out there, not interested, serving table tennis serves (maybe slower) and handing Maria the match.
I got to see this match live. It's was a really good one...interesting style match-up. I've never really seen Sevastova, but she's clever and a fighter. I do think it's appalling a) that Sharapova got a WC into the main draw, and then b) she got to play all of her matches on Ashe. The stadium really filled up for that match (after Shap/PCB,) the crowd was for her, and I get her marquee appeal, but there is a limit to crass commercialism.Great job by Sevastova! No more Ashe for Meldopova.
Yes, Sloane, for example. Plus, basically all of those seats are sold before people even know what the schedule is, mind you. I know some of the other women have complained that they got delayed by rain and Maria got to swan in and out of the court with a roof, and I don't blame them.Wondering what Sharapova narrative USTA was hoping for in this tournament? Triumphant comeback from former champion?
I understand from a ticket-selling and entertainment perspective, it's difficult to have (relatively) unknowns at the very top (Pliskova who?) and have Serena out, however I think something more digestible for serious fans would be for this narrative to shift onto Venus.
Or even rally around Sloane coming back from a year of injury and making it to the quarters.
Defo agree she should have been made to qualify, but I still also think featuring her on Ashe is not a great message from the tournament.I am ok with Meldopova being placed in Ashe given that she is allowed to play. But, I am not ok with the fact that she was given a wild card and was not asked to qualify for the tourney.
As you said in a later post, you did underestimate her. But I was at this match, and there was nothing that said Sevastova was disinterested. You don't like to hear it, but Sharapova is a pretty damned good tennis player, and Sevastova gives up several inches to her in height advantage. But she was gritty and clever. She won a lot of the battles at the net, and deftly dropped on Maria and passed her. She won with patience, too. I hadn't really paid much attention to her, but I'm very admiring now.should have given up her spot to players who really want to play pova is beatable..
