David Goffin said the chance to play someone like Carlos Alcaraz is why he sticks around at 34. He played like that tonight, and showed his brand of ball striking never goes out of style.
Carlos has array of options, explosiveness and creativity makes it so opponents have no choice but to attack with depth in the 1st few shots and rush him.The level dips give players belief too.Goffin played incredible tonight.

In regards to Medvedev, he needs to go back playing ATP250 tournaments to see at least if he can win a tournament, he is in desperate need of winning matches, playing at this higher level is not going to give him what he needs presently.

I watched 1st and tought Goffin played quite well, but assumed his level will dip and Charlie will close the match in 2. I was wrong and it went the other way. Goffin has a specific way of play and when it's all working he can be a tricky player and really good to watch. I see Charlie is still struggling with rushing the point which is weird because in the 1st set he looked patient enough and won that set. He looked more patient in some match that I watched him in IW too, but he seems to struggle to find a good balance between full attack, controlled aggresion and too defensive play.

He tried after AO, but it only ended up with more frustration for him. He has a ton of points to defend in Rome, might fall even more down in rankings.

I agree with your thoughts regarding Carlos he has to find a 'balance' and sometimes I feel he gets ahead of himself in matches, he wants a point to be over, that is where patience is needed, or else a UFE comes into play.
In regards to Meddy at this point in time, he gets frustrated at anything, I watched some of his match against Munar, he started complaining about the state of the balls and called for Jerry Armstrong, he has lost his focus, I still think playing a lower ATP tournament and actually winning more than one match but help him, quite frankly I have run out of ideas, his game has 'plateaued' and players he would normally win against have improved and can win against him.

That's what Meddy did last time he was spiraling. Instead of playing a 500, I think he went down to Los Cabos and won that. As for Charlie, I don't know what he's going to do. He's got an extra week off. He needs to head to MC and start w/ rally drills immediately.

Shelton upset by a 20-year old ranked #182. That was the wong result for him.
Shelton thought he had come all the way back from the dead down 2-5, but made some really bad UFE to give it back to Wong in the TB! The men are holding onto their seeded players, but w/ difficulty! This was a bad loss for Ben as I've never heard or seen this kid before! :astonished-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth::fearful-face:

Thank you Martina, for explaining the finer strategies of TB's. Shes's been saying this for years. Pity not many players have heard it because they'd be doing it.

  • Play every point like a BP
  • Hold your serve
  • Go w/ your favorite high % plays
  • Then all you have to do is win 1 point against serve. TB over.

Yes, but easier said than done because the other person is doing the exact same thing.

Career tiebreak %. It is mostly all-time greats, with a few randos and big servers sprinked in.

LOL, except they're not. Your chart proves it. Somebody on that list is in the dungeon.
Well, I think some players are just better than others. The chart sort of supports that: the better the player, the better at tie-breaks. And a good serve helps.

Among other ATGs, Boris Becker is #21, Rosewall's #26, Connors #35.

The outliers among greats are Mats Wilander at #66, Rod Laver at #67, Andre Agassi at #71, and Bjorn Borg at #101...kind of surprising, especially Borg.

Rune v Opelka next match on court 1,
All Rune needs to do is win this match and he will be back in the TopTen, knocking off Medvedev who will drop to No 11,. last time he was in the Top Ten was April 2024,

Yes on both counts. Some are better players than others and it helps to have a good serve.
But to my point, why is Borg in the basement?

Someone like a Ben has a good serve; but absolutely brain farts in the TB. He's someone who should memorize Martina's blueprint. If he doesn't do anything else on that list, the first one would help his game tremendously, "treat each point like a BP."

Am I the only one who despises this 2nd serve show? I think it's awful. So much talking, many times they talk over each other while a match plays in the background. Ugh!!!
