In other news, two more upsets: Korda over Sissypants, Musetti over Auger-Aliassime.

Musetti sort of stalled in 2022-23, then took a half step forward last year to finish #17, including earning a Bronze medal at the Olympics and a Slam SF, but no titles. Seems more of a 10-20 guy, but he could dip into the top 10 at some point.

That's now half the top 10 seeds, and 9 out of the top 20 out through the 2nd round. Seeded players don't usually start playing each other until the third round (of 32), so we'll see a bunch of them fall in the next couple days.

We don't deserve Gael Monfils. Dude is 38 and still balling with the kids. And really, he's the best remaining player that is older than Novak. Stan Wawrinka and Richard Gasquet are still hanging on by their finger nails, but Gael is actually still relevant. Gotta love him.

Green and yellow are the Brazilian national colors (from the flag).

Since you mentioned it:

Normally Brazilian fans wear those colors, but in Fonseca's case I see a bit more. Problem is that those colors were politicized here, so one side wears green and yellow while the other wears red. Fonseca and Fonseca's team seem to have skillfully avoided this crap (it got to other players before him, for example Thiago Wild), and I hope it keeps this way, but I won't be surprised if people create some political controversy out of nothing.

Tomas Machac is in that weird, nebulous zone where he's not quite (yet) a fixture in the top 20, but he's rising steadily. His year-end rankings from 2020-24: 195, 143, 98, 78, 25.

Obviously the big jump is 23-24, and he's already won his first title--an ATP 500--this year, so presumably is still rising. He's 24, so young enough to improve a bit more, but not so young that we should expect a huge leap.

Anyhow, not sure how high he'll go, but he's definitely part of that large pool of players who will be jostling for a spot in the top 10 at some point, even if he's more likely to be a 10-20 guy.

Oh, FFS, Frances?! Up a break in the 3rd to a cramping Fils, and he just crumpled to Fils who was swinging away with nothing to lose.

Well, here comes the Fonseca match!

First set Fonseca, playing big boy tennis.

But I have to admit that I don't like his (to my eyes) excessive celebrations. Any other player and I would be cursing his predecessors... He gets a pass for a) his talent; b) his playing style; c) being apparently decent off court and... oh, d) he is Brazilian, even if I need to forget that he is from Rio... (Oh, that accent...).

...and he's 18. He's allowed to be overly enthusiastic.

Lahyani deciding English is not the language of choice for this Miami crowd is pretty funny :)
Fonseca has made De Minaur change his game and has forced De Minaur to play aggressive tennis

Fatique has set into Fonseca's game, in the 3rd set, De Minaur is going to his bhand and getting results, also De Minaur is using his slice with good results
Fonseca has to get on 'the front foot' and start winning points again
The biggest advantage De Minaur has now is his 'physicality' he may well ride that all the way for a win
De Minaur will serve for the match 5-3
De Minaur d Fonseca 57 75 63, Alex recovered well from being down a break in the 3rd set, De Minaur 'tough as nails"
Fonseca, you continue to impress! even though you lost this match today

What's the excuse for the others? I can still see Sascha Zverev w/ his primal screams, Shelton w/ his "answering of the phone" or "I can't hear you" mime, & countless unnecessary fist pumps from all the rest! It's gotten so out of hand! It's to taunt; NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! :fearful-face::astonished-face::anxious-face-with-sweat::exploding-head:

I don't think I've ever seen De Minaur scream at the audience after winning af match. Good for him!
