Federico Cina (WC) is the youngest Italian player able to win an ATP tour match since Jannik Sinner did so in 2019, gets a convincing win 76(4) 76(2) over Comesana Q into R2.

Interesting...at just 17 years old, is this another young prospect to keep an eye on?

Surely not Dimitrov, @Moxie. I saw one of his recent matches , part of it at least, and he is lacking a lot of bite in his shots. I don't expect him to go far here. Hope to be proven wrong, but I am not holding my breath.

I was looking at R2. Alcaraz plays the winner of Vukic x Goffin. For different reasons, both seem to me like players who can bring problems to Alcaraz, specially if he is in an off day. McKenzie on R3 falls in the same category. Beyond that, he will be in full flight already and should only be stopped by some other top dog.
Well, it will be Goffin, not Vukic, and Kyrgios, not McKenzie, IF Alcaraz gets past the wiley aging Belgian with no weapons. Boy, you really DO think Alcaraz is overrated. SMH. But I'll eat crow if Goffin gets the upset.

You normally get nuances and subtext, but not once your prejudices kick in.

I never said Goffin is the favorite. I am saying that I find more likely that Alcaraz is upset in an early round by him than by a superiorly ranked player later in the tournament. And Alcaraz once in a while loses early in big tournaments. Hence the word "landmine".

And you normally have a sense of humor except when disagreed with. I get that you're merely talking landmines, but I still find Goffin an amusing choice. Look, I'll give you props if McFly even gives Charlie a hard time. You know your tennis better. Personally, I'd still be more worried about potentially Kyrgios, now that he's through (no, I didn't think he would be, either,) or Dimitrov.

But speaking of Kyrgios, he looked pretty good. And happy. If there is one person that this new coaching from the stands format suits, it's Nick. He likes to chatter non-stop, anyway. Now he can actually just be talking to the coach. And he doesn't have to feel so lonely out there. Maybe it will bring him back to tennis. I wouldn't be against that.

I've seen Goffin give Nadal a hard time in Monte fucking Carlo (shittiest city in the world), so he can give a hard time anyone, anywhere. He had the upper hand in that match untill he was disrupted by a grotesque bad call by the umpire, which robbed him of a crucial break.

But I actually would like to see Alcaraz against Kyrgios. Alcaraz would completely obliterate him. If you wanted to see me rooting for Carlos, that would be the perfect occasion.

I remember that match. It's true that he was running rough-shod over Nadal, and he was robbed by a bad call. But he let that get to him, and carry over into the 2nd set, which was on him, completely. He ended up losing that match 6-3, 6-1. That was also 8 years ago.

I sense you are in the anti-Kyrgios camp. :face-with-tears-of-joy: All good. Could be a fun/interesting match if Alcaraz does play him.

Battle of the youngsters, Fonseca v. Tien, very tight, and they got to 1st set TB.

EDIT: Ouch...very one-sided and went to Tien.

I am not anti-nobody. But I tend to root against players who I think are overrated, and Kyrgios is the most overrated player of all times, and it is not even close.

I think you forgot about Roy Emerson, at least among writers of the last few decades.

I do find it a bit annoying how Fonseca tries to get the crowd cheering when he goes up 30-15. Come on lad, win the game first.
