So whoever (Nole, And and Nadal) wins this last Slam should be the best player of this year?

that is the way I am seeing it:

if andy wins then he is the best on the planet.

nadal is the best on the planet if he takes it.

I am not sure if nole is going to make the final.

andy has him on the run.

You're assuming Andy will make the final! I think he's been on overload this last season or so; Olympic Gold, USO, then Wimbledon! He has to have a letdown! It only make sense! :nono  :D

Andy has been pretty consistent in the majors these past few years. I don't see why he can't defend his title. He has a tough draw but he can do it.

I don't think there is a clear favourite for the title. I wouldn't be surprised if any of the top 3 won it. I'm glad Clay Death is so confident that Andy will beat Novak should they meet. This isn't Wimbledon. It's a new challenge and a new surface. Novak will be 'up for it'. I've no doubt.

My fingers are crossed for Andy. :)

I don't think Andy tanked either match. He lost to the better player on the day. It happens.

Sampras isn't a fool but I don't see a reason why his opinion is more valid than say any other ex-player that isn't tipping Andy for the title.

I'm hoping he is correct though.

Don't worry, Iona. I picked Andy over Djokovic. Unfortunately, I'm a Nadal fan first so I pick Nadal over Andy in the Final:blush:

Sorry, but I wouldn't quote Sampras on much of anything! He was truly one of the dullest champions ever! Even Borg had more to him and he didn't say much! lol! I can imagine anyone tanking these days! People prefer not to go that extra mile and ask for time off! They either show up and lose early or feign an injury and not even bother at all! I hate to tell you, but no one's more a drama queen than Murray! I think he sometimes physically makes himself hurt when he's not happy in a match! I don't want to see him grabbing a hamstring or whining about his shoes! That's just not professional! Nole seems to be the biggest class act with nothing controversial going on with him; on court or behind the scenes! You barely knew about dad's illness and grandfather's death! Everything is blown up so much more when it concerns the other players; even Federer when he was top ranked!

I think it would be too close to call but I'm glad you think Andy would beat Novak. I wouldn't mind an Andy v Rafa final but I'd obviously be hoping for an Andy win. :)

of course he will gun down nole. he has nole on the run.

this is new York. nole will remember all too clearly what happened here last year.

and he will be even more clear on what happened at Wimbledon where he failed to win a single set in the final.

that being said, he may not have to do it: del potro might finish the job.

Dull or not he is still one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport. People will listen to his opinion. You don't have a very high opinion of tennis professionals do you? Just how many do you think are tanking or feigning injury? Murray "..physically makes himself hurt.." Hmm does he? You know you don't need to watch him. It's not compulsory.

I'm not sure what Novak's dad or grandfather has to do with anything. Are you suggesting that the news would have generated more column inches if it had been Rafa or Roger's dad/grandfather? If so, I think Novak would be OK with that. Some people do like to keep private matters as private as possible.

I know someone off the court is more than likely very different on court, but being a jerk on court always stays with me! Never a fan of "Mr Stall" himself, Rafa Nadal! It's as if we should appreciate he showed up! The match runs at his time-table regardless if you're serving or not! I could go on, but gonna move on! The only thing I can remember about Murray off court is his buying local hotel, the trials and tribulations with his girlfriend (w/ video games), and of course his mother's support!

a lot of them have their superstitions. what can you do?

I certainly had mine but I did not touch my damn nose 100 times and pull on my underwear 18 times before and after every point.

I don't know why he is so bloody superstitious. it is not really helping him play better tennis.

he could be more calm if he cuts some of that out. and that would help his tennis.

tony has tried talking to him a few times about his rituals but now days nadal ends up running right over tony if he is not happy with him.

and how can anyone argue with nadal`s success? he is one of the greatest ever to pick up a racquet.

tough draw for Andy and nole.

It all balances out eventually! Someone always gets hosed in the majors since everyone should be there; the only miss that mattered was Andy being out at FO this season! That caused Nole to get Rafa in the semi when all the seeds had to move up! "Thanx Ang!" Time is running out on Nole to complete his career slam and circle of Masters wins! All he needs is a FO and Cinn. victory in the next couple years! Anything's possible after poor Roger was helped out so much by Soderling in '09 at the French!

Andy being out at FO this season was a smart move,my guess Ivan Lendl would have sorted this out before Wimbledon.Someone getting hosed could happen to any of the bigger stars. If we go back of late in Slams,Murray been in the of the last 4 Finals he's played in,winning 2 Slams. Also Murray won a Gold @ the Olympics,To me that's as good as a Slam win or even better, that only comes round once in 4 years. As a Murray fan & winning Slams i'm not bothered about the French Open;) Murray's not going to lose sleep over Nole & a SF match,Murray will look for what's best for himself.I'm sure Nole/Nadal & Fed will 2.

I believe the bookies and the general mass or even some hard core fans would give Rafa the favourite title node going into this Slam based on his back to back performance at the Masters these past weeks. Nole should run a very 2nd close. Andy third and Federer and Del Po should be the two underdogs. That's the normal takes of things strictly based on their latest performance. But as we've already seen in the past especially this year, nothing is and will be given to any player and this Slam will be no exception to that rule.

What's that got to do with anything? Was the subject matter 'who's the dullest?' And while we are at it, let's take also into account that what you are saying is merely a matter of opinion. All of it. And Nole's one of the biggest showboats out there. The way he celebrates his win even the apes would be ashamed of his behaviour. And Nadal's rituals are mind boggling and his butt picking can be seen as something disgusting. Federer's arrogance can tick some people really off. But then again, I don't mean to judge people purely based on hatred like you do.

As to the 2nd highlighted part, judging by your reaction, you must be the bigger drama queen here.

Pete Sampras was dull? That's like saying Shakespeare and Mozart are dull! The guy was a genius of precision on the court, an absolute master of dominance. He was never dull!

That's the kind of thing casual observers say... :nono

The post asked what we thought about Pete's quote on a subject! I declined taking his opinion seriously! My added comment about him being dull had nothing to do with the man's tennis ability! He's just not one I would quote having to deal with many subjects, even tennis! You guys get so bent out of shape! Maybe you should read and interpret what's being said before losing your minds! No offense was meant; esp. since I proclaimed him the GOAT until Roger took over the mantle recently! Now that that has been discussed, he's dropping fast due to a lack of FO titles! Even Nadal may supplant him in the rankings one day and I find that the most disturbing since I've never been a fan of that kind of "ugly tennis!" I also get aggravated with the stalling/toweling off, butt pickin', invoking of "VAMOS'," and challenging of calls where he's so wrong he should lose 2 challenges! :snigger
