Yeah, drinking water with ice gives you the squits a lot of the time. Hopefully just a 24 hour bug and Imodium fixes it. Could be food poisoning too and they're calling it a virus incorrectly. Hopefully he'll be fine by tomorrow.

For those who wanted to know as to who will NOT win Shanghai,
we have an answer from Tignor . It is Djokovic.

Tignor left him alone without jinxing, and he won Beijing.

Talking of sea food, on the one hand Rafa likes sea food and on the other hand sharks can smell blood.

Here's a link to it. Po' Ralph, he was born under a cloud.

The second-ranked Nadal began feeling pain in his abdomen late Saturday, and the next day went to the hospital where the doctors confirmed he had the early stages of appendicitis.

Nadal said on Tuesday he chose to try treatment with antibiotics rather than undergo surgery right away. He felt well enough to begin hitting again, he said.

The 14-time major winner said the risk of his condition getting worse after three days of steady improvement "is always very, very low."

"I am not going to go for surgery. That's great news for me today. That's why I'm here practicing for 45 minutes, and trying to play tomorrow. But obviously I am not in my best condition," he said.

Nadal said he will talk with his doctors when he returns to Spain after the tournament about whether he will need to have the appendix removed.

I have read what he plans to do and am shocked. These things don't tend to get better and IF THEY BURST (unlikely, but we know he has an inflamed appendix) it can be life-threatening. I would sacrifice things now and even WTF rather than wait and possibly lose out on Melbourne too. In many ways, Nadal has been blessed and very fortunate in terms of raw physical talent and movement on a tennis court, but he has also suffered his fair share of injury. Blessings to him and his family.

I never known a player of his stature to be so brutally hindered by injuries, Shawn. Of all the greats I've seen, they never suffered so many interruptions to their schedule. I agree with the treatment you suggest, though. He's not going to win Shanghai anyway, but putting off an operation means he might not win anything for a while.

The priority is Melbourne. He needs to wind down and deal with things immediately, imho...

^Totally agree. Wouldn't wish this on anyone. There are some things more important than tennis, he shouldn't risk his health. He has absolutely nothing to prove!

"Nadal To Play Shanghai Despite Appendicitis"

Despite being diagnosed with appendicitis on Sunday, World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will play at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. The Spaniard is due to open his campaign against Feliciano Lopez on Wednesday evening at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Nadal explained that after arriving in Shanghai on Saturday, he began to feel a lot of stomach pain overnight and went to the hospital on Sunday morning. There, he was diagnosed with the beginnings of appendicitis and offered a course of aggressive antibiotics in an attempt to avoid surgery.

The medication does appear to have helped Nadal, whose pain has reduced significantly, to the point he will walk onto court on Wednesday. After two days resting in his hotel room, the 28-year-old Nadal practised at the Qizhong Tennis Center on Tuesday for 45 minutes.

“I was in the hospital on Sunday,” explained Nadal. “Yesterday the nurse came to my room to give me the treatment again. Today I was at the hospital in the morning again. I had again the antibiotics. It seems like everything is under control now. The normal thing for the improvement to continue. I’m not going to go for surgery. That's great news for me today. That's why I'm here practising for 45 minutes and trying to play tomorrow. But obviously I am not in my best condition.

“The positive thing is I am feeling better today than yesterday. Yesterday I felt a little bit better than the day before. I hope tomorrow I will feel better than today. That's why I want to try. I am in Shanghai. I am here to play a tournament. If I don't play, I don't have the possibility to win. So that's it.”

Nadal confirmed the doctor advised him that sooner or later, he will require surgery to remove his appendix, but the decision on the timing of that operation will be taken after he consults with his doctor back in Mallorca.

“I have to talk with my doctors when I get back home,” said the left-hander. “It is true that the doctor here told me that [eventually] I have to take it out. Because when you have it once, the normal thing is that it is going to come back. Sooner or later I have to take it out.”

While I am sorry that Rafa's going through yet another health issue, the good news is that
appendicitis is not a major surgery. It is a very minor surgery and the recovery time is
fairly short.

I wonder whether he can continue to play (without risking aggravating the appendicitis)
until WTF and then have the surgery to remove it right after WTF. I don't have enough
knowledge to assess the risk involved.

Most don't even need surgery as antibiotics will do the job.

It's not good to be on antibiotics, and especially for an athlete. I wish he'd deal with this without further burdening his body. If surgery is the cleanest and most effective way, I think he should have this as soon as poss.

Of course, he has a team of experts who know best, but I hope they get it right. This season has been disastrous for Nadal, with injuries and ailments... :nono

From the news articles, it looks like they are trying to suppress it away and he will undergo
surgery only if it comes back again.
