Murray finishes off Troicki and then beats Anderson in straights for his 34th ATP title! Way to go Muzza! Wimbledon next! :clap

He played well this week and looks as if he's enjoying himself, no doubt he will have a strong Wimbledon and a great chance of his 3rd slam. I'll be very surprised if he is beaten by anyone other than Djokovic or Federer

I am rooting for Muzza to reach the final (and lose there to Fed). :ras:

What would be swell. It would mean Murray got over his Djokophobiaitis. Another Wimbledon final between The Fed and The Muzza with the opposite result would be sweet. ;)

If it were a Murray-Fed final, I would favor Andy this year. It's really good to see him all the way back to form and confidence after that long recovery from the back surgery. Folks were beginning to say he'd never get back to his best, but I think he is, and possibly ready to be beyond it. He's got the 2 Slams in his pocket, and the Wimbledon pressure will never be like it was before the 2013 win. Relaxed and confident are two very good things.

Of course you would favor Andy :)

If it's Roger and Andy I think Fed takes it unless he finds himself in a tough semi leading up to it. If it's Roger and Djokovic it will be tough to call and one factor could be who had to go through Murray in the semi.

I'd favor Djokovic over Roger but Roger over Andy.

I think Roger needs his serve a little too much against Novak at this point because when push comes to shove, Djokovic will be the one dictating a little more (that wouldn't have been the case a few years ago), and Novak has an easier time defending on grass and turning rallies around. Once he starts getting a read on the serve it gets difficult. If Roger is having a great serving performance then it's a different issue. But I feel at this point that little bit of extra consistency, bigger margins, and fewer errors from Djokovic give him the edge, and that's sort of what happened last year.

Murray vs. Fed is a little different since Roger could still hit Murray off the court and much of it depends on how easily Murray is holding serve/how well he's serving.

But the thing with predicting any Federer win over the top guns at this point is, he could feasibly be completely out of sorts and not find the required cleanliness in his game (see Olympic finals vs. Murray).

I'd also add that Roger really struggles when returning Novak's serve these days.

I agree with this. I would frame it this way.... for Roger to beat Novak he needs to have a good serving day. Much easier for him on faster surfaces

I actually just watched highlights of last year's final, and I had forgotten how pedestrian Roger's forehand looked, especially during fire fights (ie forehand to forehand exchanges, where Novak was generating much more power and putting Roger on the backfoot). It also doesn't help that Fed has far fewer options off the backhand wing and is taking a huge risk going down the line. I was actually surprised with just how little fire power he had.

Honestly, it's a credit to Roger that he's able to hang with these guys still, as he's mainly doing it with serving, terrific point construction, great shot selection, etc...

His forehand needs to be more on these year, that's for sure.

Roger's problem on the forehand is that he was not aggressive enough. He played an extremely clean match and had one of his best serving days ever (not an exaggeration) and that's what made it really close.

I'd say if one shot cost him the match it was his ROS. It was horrific. The problem is that it isn't a fluke, his ROS is usually pretty bad these days especially against Novak. The forehand overall wasn't bad as he rarely missed and was playing great defense off both wings but it simply wasn't strong enough to give a red hot Djokovic much trouble from the baseline. It ultimately didn't do anything to help win the match but it also didn't really contribute in losing him the match either. Nole served well but he had way too many free points and easy putaways, for the most part it didn't give Roger a chance to break.

Overall if Roger plays like he did in last year's final I would take that any time, as it took what may have been Djokovic's best final ever to barely win. The Djokovic we've seen in GS finals the 2 years before and the 1 year since would not have won that match.

Hey, Darth, I could say, "Of course you would say that Roger can still win over Andy," but I would never denigrate your opinion in the same way. :ras: :hug This IS a Murray thread, and he's been playing some really great tennis of late. I also think that Roger's days of winning a Slam are behind him. If they weren't, he would have won one or both of Wimby and the USO last year. He was very well set up for both. Andy is 28 and has gotten the Wimbledon monkey off his back. Should he meet Roger in the finals, I do think there are plenty of reasons to think he could prevail, especially if Murray can make it a long one. Your point of who draws Murray on their side between the top 2 seeds is well-made, and I agree there.

I don't blame you for thinking that nor did I mean to denigrate your opinion. I'm just poking fun is all. There are reasons to think both Murray and Roger could win a hypothetical final in a few weeks. Murray has played the better tennis this year but this is grass and Roger playing near his aggressive best could win in much the same way he did in 2012.

I don't think Roger's slam days are behind him, he got a little unfortunate at Wimbledon last year running into a Djokovic who probably played his best ever grass match. That's not what I'd call things "setting up well for Roger last year". The USO was set up amazing and he stunk it up there I will give you that. But I have Roger disappointing you at least 1 more time (winning 1 of the next 2 Wimbledons) and he will reach 1 of the next 2 USO finals.

I know you were poking fun, which is why I gave you the raspberry, and the hug.

My reasoning for saying that Roger won't win another Slam is that opportunities have been presenting themselves, and he hasn't been able to capitalize. Yes, Novak played his best tennis to beat Roger last year in the Wimbledon final, but it's not like he's going away. Roger couldn't beat him. And Roger blew a golden opportunity at the USO last year, as you rightly concede. Cilic was on fire, it must be said, but Roger has not been one, in the past, to miss great opportunities. Djokovic was out by the time he played that semi. He even had the best draw he could have hoped for at RG this year, and didn't make it to the final. I really do think that Roger's best-of-5 best tennis is behind him, and I don't think that's wishful thinking. He might get lucky again in the next two Slam draws, but what are the chances? And even if he does, if he couldn't make it work at 32/33, why would it work better at 33/34?

Just a friendly reminder that this thread is for Murray. The gazillion threads for Fedalovic are over there.

^ Hey, I did bring it back around. If the Murray conversation doesn't include his chances against the other Big 4, then you will concede him to irrelevancy.
