Roger's looking better than Murray. That figures to be a war as long as Simon doesn't make Roger play a long match.

Simon is not a tough opponent, but a tricky opponent. I remember Roger saying something like
"He put me to sleep with boring play and when I woke up I lost" after his loss to Simon in Canada in 2008. This is not his actual sentence even though I put it in quotes. But, that was the bottom line of Fed's remark.

Ah, ha, the pre-emptive "If Roger doesn't play a long match prior." But that's the problem with Roger at 33. In the majors, he can only do well if he doesn't have to play a long match before a top one. And I'm only quoting his fans, here. This is why I think Murray will get him in the SF, should they meet, and I would say regardless of Simon. Roger doesn't hold up in best of 5 against the top guys anymore. I think if he meets Murray, Andy will pass him, regardless of the path to the SF.

^ There's no question that how easily Roger gets through a match is a big factor in the slams at his age. If Federer can get past Simon pretty easily he will have a full tank vs. Murray. If Simon pushes him 5 then he is already in trouble vs. Andy before the first ball is struck.

I wouldn't say Roger doesn't "hold up well" in best of 5's against the top guys anymore, rather Roger doesn't hold up well in 5th sets. If Fed goes 5 with Murray I'd favor the latter, and even if he survives a 5 set war with Murray he's probably losing the final. Anyways, Fed still has a Simon to grill and Murray has a popsicle to chill.

Well, you very nearly agree with me. Basically, what we're both saying, is that Roger has to make short work of Simon, then Andy, and then the finalist. Not impossible. But if his days get long, his chances grow shorter. I know what you're saying about the ugly 5th set, for Roger, but there is a war of attrition, which you've even copped to. A long match with Simon bodes ill for his chances v. Murray. And there goes the knock-on effect. Roger is still in the game, but does far better in 3 sets.

Factoid: Roger is not broken even once since the beginning of the first match in Halle.

I don't see his match with Simon going the distance.

Naw, I don't really either. :laydownlaughing It's the one after I'm still thinking he won't get through, unless he makes it 3 quick sets. And I don't think he can.

i don't really think the Simon match will matter all that much. it's still grass. and basically, Fed has had a week and a half of easy practice so far. yesterday's match was all of 1:25 hours, and that included some 15 minutes of medical care for RBA. the heatwave is over as well. and finally, Fed will have a full day off to recover.
so unless (1) rain delays tomorrows matches into thursday and/or (2) simon engages him in a >12 game fifth, i don't see Fed being hampered by that match if he does end up winning.

however, i actually favor Murray going into the potential SF, for reasons unclear even to myself. just a gut feeling. (also, i'll hate Murray forever if he goes to the final and loses...)

Fun fact: Fed covered 6,098 metres in four rounds so far. Murray did 8,196 - so that's like an extra match right there. again, i think that Murray won't have a problem because of that, it's just that i think Fed also won't be affected too much, no matter what happens.

It doesn't have to be 3 quick sets vs. Murray or anyone else for that matter. And since it's grass and the points are shorter I'd say Roger's chances in a 5th are better here than on any other surface where it's more physical.

kinda fitting that this thread disappeared to the second page after yesterday's semi.

Andy's now going for two years without a Slam win. two years and four days ago, Murray was the holder of two Slam titles. since then, he's been to one final. i know, there were the injuries, and his '15 is actually going better than last year (F/Q/Q vs Q/S/Q at the slams, plus he's got a masters title)... but still.

in the semis chat, some thought i was a bit too harsh on Andy for that loss. the thing is, i was being harsh on myself for still believing that Andy could be close to Fedalovic just for a little while. yesterday, and generally in twelve match losing streak against Fedovic (hasn't beat either player since '13), it became clear that while Andy is a wonderful player, he's simply not a truly great one. he has his place in history for being the first British man to win Wimbledon since the proclamation of the Magna Carta... and he might edge out a couple more slams (2-3 tops). but he's not gonna be a dominating force on the tour at any point... and that's okay, i guess. it's just sad for those (like me) who still kept hoping he'll go on another good tear at some point.

It's clear that Murray is way behind Fedalovic. But he's done great with what he has and I hope he will continue to win some titles and maybe even another Slam or two before he's done. He's definitely an interesting character and the tour has been that much more fun with him around. One loss to a very very good Federer isn't going to chase the Murray fans away.

I get what you're saying john, but in my opinion these things have always been clear and it just makes me Fed up (I'm hilarious) when people use every Murray loss as an opportunity to reiterate these conclusions. Yeah he's never going to be in there historically with the other three guys, but that's fine.

It's unfair to use the greatness of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer as a stick with which to beat Murray, even if you don't know you're doing it, everyone does. Just look at your comment there "2-3 slams tops" as if Murray ends his career with 5 slams, it'll be "only" 5 slams... I mean come on, if Andy finishes his career with 5 majors that's an amazing achievement, even more so in this era where the other guys have set the bar so ridiculously and unrealistically high in terms of numbers.

And like I say, it's not your fault that you're doing it, it's just a reflection of the unrealistic greatness of Fedalovic making the regular greatness of Murray look not just ordinary, but even a bit disappointing.

Even as thing stand, I don't think Andy is too far away from lower-tier all-time greats like Becker and Edberg.

Imagine if Becker or Edberg were in Andy's shoes, playing in the era of Fedalovic. No way they would have won 6 slams. They'd probably be about where Murray is, with a couple of slams. Great grass court players though they were, Fed is the greatest grass court playerever. They were not as good on clay as Rafa. Would they have both won 2 Australian Opens if they had to face Novak on Rod Laver arena? I highly doubt it.

I think Andy's fans should be harsh concerning their guy! He has the ability to beat anyone and has proved it in the past! Unfortunately every step forward he takes, makes him take 2 steps back! I've seen him back 7+ years ago and he could serve and volley more and put pressure on anyone from the baseline! It's like he regressed getting tons of satisfaction by being a human backboard, then hitting some kind of screaming winner after 26 strokes! Absolutely asinine! I trained by being a counter-puncher, but in a tourney, you need to push, take your opponent out of his comfort zone; not just wait them out for the most part! It's almost as ugly a game as Nadal; both won't make it to 30's playing that well! Rafa's already shown how broken down he is already; losing 2 clay matches to Fabio! You can't play like that indefinitely no matter how well you train! It's so frustrating to see these guys get into 4 and 5 set battles because no one wants to close out a point sooner by attacking the net!

I think past stars would eat these guys alive even with their superior athletic ability of today! There's little thought and strategy going on with 99% of all pros; "just bash" and hope for the best! Idiots! It's unwatchable and that's the reason I don't know so many of today's players; esp. on the ladies side! I keep trying to push the old man out the door, but without Roger, I'm not sure how much I'd enjoy the game even if Nole was winning everything in sight! He just does the bashing a little bit better than everyone else! :cover :nono  :dodgy:

'anohter tear' implies he ever went on a tear. he didn't. he won 2 slams where he didn't have to play a memeber of the big3 until the final and that big 3 member, in both cases, underperfrmoed, and andy ttook advantage.

if andy had tho9se draws now he would have won those 2 slams now.

i am a hige murray fan, and the unrealsitc expcectaions of him annoy me. here is a simple sentence that summarieses it compltely:

for murray to beat fedalivic, he needs them to underperform

it's really as simple as that.
that is how it has always been, and that is how it is now.

so people need to stop being harsh on murray for losing to goat contenders and highest-tier all-tiome greats.

murray beat nadal in the madrid final because nadal was nto at his best.
murray did not beat fed in the wd sf this year because fed did not underperform.

Been a while since I posted here but with Andy's interesting "dilema" coming up next month, I thought I would post it here. Since Wimbledon, Murray has had some highs (Davis Cup, Montreal) and lows (USO, Shanghai) but he has had a very solid season for anyone not named Novak Djokovic so it's hard to complain. He will be playing in three more events this year; the Paris Masters, World Tour Finals and then the Davis Cup final.
From everything I've read, it seems that Andy would just skip everything and concentrate on the Davis Cup final. Maybe he wouldn't feel that way if it were all on hard court, but after the hard courts of Paris and London, he's going to have make a transition to playing clay in Belgium. He's an all-court player so it won't be as hard as for some others, but you can see that Andy does not want this opportunity to take Great Britain's first Davis Cup in 79 years (or something like that).
It's going to be very interesting how he performs at the two events. Will he just mail it in? That's hard to imagine but it could affect Murray's play if his mind is in Belgium. Going to be an interesting month for Muzza fans.

I've posted and read about this subject on several sites including S' Hoopla, T' Tennis, and here! I thought he might start tanking in Shanghai, but he killed himself to get past Isner unnecessarily since he had already overtaken Roger for #2 in the world! He must have needed another drubbing by Nole in the semi's! :popcorn :lolz: :clap
