I am not sure whether we want to go that far. I know the competition in 1930's is not the same as current one. But, still Fred had won Career Grand Slam (one of only seven players to do so) and has won a total of 8 GSs (not to mention 4 DCs). Even if you cut it down by half due to "weak competition", Andy should win at least two more GSs just to be sitting in the same table.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised when I saw that article too. I think Murray will have a greater career than Perry when he's done, but maybe not yet. It's certainly debatable though.

My point is that it is not even debatable at this time.

I got that. It wasn't mine though.

Andy says he will not be playing in Feb next year when they are expecting a Baby. So, after the AO he plans to take an extended break and then play DC, IW and M.

Sounds like a recipe for failure! He needs the work; practice isn't enough! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy: :cover

It is not really as long a break as you imagine. It is just four weeks gap between AO and DC.

If he can be around for Kim to pop out Murray Jr without him missing any masters, slams or D.C. I call that very good planning.

I'll never understand it; athletes who have resources, but insist on missing important moments in their careers due to pending births! IIRC a quarterback for the Minn. Vikings decided to stay home rather than go perform in a playoff game! And he wondered why he was terminated! :nono :cover

Better he got terminated from the team than the baby did. ;)

These blokes are wealthy, they have gigantic tents filled with sycophants, babysitters, hairdressers, arm-wrestlers, masseuses from the exotic east, hangers on, milk tasters and blokes in big suits. They can afford a baby and I bet you a pound to a soft tar nickel than Nole was far happier when he saw the little face than he ever was at Wimbledon..

Are these fathers doing anything more than being there; maybe holding a video phone to record the birth to be re-lived again and again? A team sport is a bit harder to justify skipping an event I suppose! :nono  :dodgy:

Yeah, they're being fathers to their babies. More important than winning a tournament, I betcha they'd tell you that too. :dodgy: :cover :ras: :popcorn

So what are we talking about here? We're dissing Murray for skipping out of Dubai and maybe some South american dirt tourneys so he can be at the birth of his first child?

Seriously? Where I work, I've seen guys I work with work on the day their wife gives birth, and then after work go trot over to see their newborn. When my two were born, I took three days off and was there for the before-during-after events. There wasn't anything going to keep me from that, as long as I wasn't causing any trouble. The moment when they brought my kid out for the first time and all that is something that I'll treasure for the rest of my life.

Now if you're on a team, the situation changes. Especially if you're an essential part of that team and you've signed a gazillion-dollar contract to play for that team. Then you have a responsibility and if you miss the birth, then it's your fault for not planning your recreating procedures better.

Different situations and different rules I guess, but Murray has the right to plan his season as he pleases.

Getting real sick of the Murray bashing.

I thought they were just messing about but on these forums, given that it's Murray, he probably is genuinely being criticised for it.

Did Roger and Novak not skip tournaments for their children being born?

Roger skipped Rome last year for that reason. Novak didn't skip a tournament as his son was born after Shanghai but before Paris Bercy, so it happened in a week where he would not have played anyway. Otherwise he would have certainly pulled out of the respective tournament.

Dubai is only a 50 event, also it is a fast HC event, with no impact on preparing for IW.
Not a big deal at all, as far as I am concerned nor would affect Andy's ranking either.
He had bigger fish to fry than Dubai

Nice article. I love this bit, typically dry Murray humour:

Later, when Murray was asked whether there should be a parade for the team, he responded in a perfectly Murravian way:

“I’m not sure anyone would come,” he said. “We’d just be going round London seeing sights on our own and waving at buildings.”

Great article. Murray is definitely the best interview of the Big 4!
