He's a perfectly fine journeyman. I'd actually call him solid, within his talents. Anyway, Rafa started uncharacteristically sluggish, for whatever reason, and improved each set.

Nah, by definition a journeyman is average/mediocre as far as the tour goes. Of course he is far from a mediocre tennis player being a top 30 player in the world. But in the ATP he's a decent talent who doesn't really scare anyone good and we saw it today, just too inconsistent.

I'm not sure if we're clear on terms. (And you actually called Kohlschreiber "nothing" a couple of posts ago, which I guess you're walking back.) I would call a "journeyman" a solid mid-packer, which I think Kohlscreiber is. https://www.google.com/#q=journeyman+definition&*

"Reliable but not outstanding." I think that describes him. You say he's inconsistent, but I'd disagree. He always shows up to play, and play hard within his gifts. But they're limited. Fognini is inconsistent, as is Verdasco, Dimitrov, Gulbis. But Kohlscreiber always shows up with the same game and attitude.

Eh, we are kind of splitting hairs here. I think Kohl's game is inconsistent but he is mentally pretty steady if that makes sense. He goes for his shots because he has to yet he doesn't have big weapons. If he's on his backhand in particular can be great but it's not high % tennis and he can be quite erratic. I don't think he's an underachiever like some of the basketcases you named but those guys are also more talented and dangerous. But being a "solid midlander" is a fancy way of saying you like him but he isn't good.

Finally, Kohly picking up on his service game. Hope he maintains that.

My Lord , gsm..you are just like a blood sucking vulture waiting for a Nadal corpse..

No not that. Kohly was playing way too loosely (that is in a highly relaxed manner) in the second set. Bare minimum he should have forced to Rafa to serve out the second set. Then, at least he would have had the advantage of going first in third set.

about as blatant as a vulture can be about this match

I don't know if we're so much splitting hairs as we'll never see tennis in the same way. Your version is very black & white. Either you win, or you don't. I appreciate effort, and I think that being #31 is really not a bad thing. (And he's been as high as 16.) I thought you respected low-percentage, go-for-it tennis. I'm guessing that "solid midlander" is an autocorrect mistake, but I think basically everyone likes Phillip. He's not great, but he is actually good.

I am never a fan of talking down players, using terms mediocre, limited talent and etc which show a lack of respect for those who are actually one in a million level of talent.....a top 30 player is more than that, as there are definitely more than 30 million people who play the sport. Instead of talking low of Kohli, one should praise Nadal for how amazing he is always there fighting until the last point, even though he's been through so much and isn't in great form.

Moronic scheduling. They put RF vs. JMDP in the day :cry

Well, wasn't moronic IW schedule when Federer always was playing at night while others players were coocking under the sun?

Oh I missed that one one my post about why Fed won Indian Wells---only because he had it easy playing at night lol. Brava!

DYJR continues to win..but as always no love from this board..

What sort of love are you hoping to see? He's playing well, but is hardly a threat for the title. This is a guy who has never ranked higher than #38, and that was five years ago.

That said, this is his second Masters in a row that he's reached the fourth round (at least). He's never reached the fourth round of a Masters before. Who knows, maybe he's having a late peak.
