he can volley confidently which is always good. that means he can cause some problems for the opposition by going forward.

and he has a splendid backhand that has some finishing power.

he can also take the ball on the rise off either wing. he seems to have a bit of flair for the game.

Who knew he was the up-and-coming Spaniard?

If he could just stop grunting like a brontosaurus with constipation it'd be easier to watch his matches though.

that brings us to another interesting question:

is grunting really necessary in tennis?

Definitely not when so many players don't do it and those who do don't do it all the time.

No problem with grunting unless it is well after the stroke and yes I am talking about Mr. Ferrer in particular. I don't think that is something they'll ever address as it is too subjective.

The women are a whole different problem where the main offenders are still clima...excuse me, shrieking, while the opponents are hitting the next shot. So at least the men aren't as bad in that respect :)

I think grunting on certain shots, where you put that extra something into it is one thing and normal, screaming on every shot is a whole different problem and unnecessary.

:laydownlaughing Shows how much the women love the game that it makes them moan so much :p

Exactly. No problem with belting a ball and putting a little much power than usual into it followed by a primal yell of rage. When it's not the norm it can be kinda cool in a way on huge shots.

some grunting is acceptable but intentional screaming should be against the law on the tennis court.

Problem would be to differentiate between them in a sound, objective
manner. That may be impossible and hence grunting will live on.
