I reckon this loss isn't too bad for him though he should have seen it as a chance to go deep as Istomin isn't exactly a formidable opponent by ATP standards. The upcoming Masters and US Open give Tomic a chance to make a big statement though.

I don't think his ranking was high enough to give him direct entry to the masters (was not high even for USO). Does he get a WC anywhere?

Tomic does not have a direct entry in any of the tournaments you are saying as
his ranking was way too low at the time of cutoff and is still low for the Masters.

He can still qualify though. The lad won a tournament a couple of weeks ago and just had a slightly disappointing loss to a player ranked above him, overall things are looking better for him than one month ago.

Ya, he can qualify, but it is a long road.

The problem with him is that he lacks professionalism, discipline and motivation despite
having talent.

Generally, he gets himself to a point where he is so down and then everybody criticizes
him and then he wins a tourney or puts in some good performance.

If you cannot perform unless your rear end is on fire, you are not coming to come up
in the tennis world; it is dog eat dog out there.

The match between Karlovic and Paire was the match of the day, it didn't end nicely either, Paire had a few kind words for Ivo at the end.

I was wondering what happened - saw a couple of reports that there was something exchanged between these two.

I love Iveta Benesova Melzer for many reasons, but one of the many was her invention of the hashtag #itsalwayssomethingwithBen. Paire just can't seem to stay away from controversy.

Sock implodes in the second set TB, Milos moves on...

First time I saw Sock-it-up. He has potential surely, but he just needs more experience and mental fortitude. He was up a minibreak in both TB, but some loose points followed and the TB slipped away in a similar fashion.

Next up for Milos is Hewit.

Good, Isner is booooooooriiiing.

Raonic vs Lleyton could be very interesting.

I have a feeling that both Sock and Johnson will develop into a solid top 50 player. That doesn't sound like much, compared to the history of American tennis, but is still more than they have right now.

I saw part of Gasquet vs. Sella tonight, the outcome was certain from the beginning, there were a couple of nice rallies but other than that the most exciting part of the match was the malfunction of one of the scoreboards... I did get some nice pictures, it was a pleasure to see two single backhanders going at it, you don't see that too often.

Same thing with Birdie vs. Ginepi, another one sided match, it was clear that Tomas was going to prevail, he was in a different class compared to Bobby. I caught the end of that match.

Surprise was the featured doubles match between the Bryans and Kozlov/Donaldson, I wouldn't have thought the crowd would be pulling for the underdogs!

Check the Photo blog later, we will have new pictures added.

It's been unseasonably cool in Washington this week, other than Monday, we have been in high 70s during daytime and 60s at nights.
It's suppose to get warmer as we get close to the weekend, the conditions will be changing. For now, the courts are playing fast.

The matches are becoming more crucial, the second round is completed, the third round is about to begin.

so mr tomic lost to denis istomin..the man who looks like trevor horn 1979 era from the "video kills the radio star" video.

I wonder what "the atomic tomic" is thinking these days..at *nearly 22yrs old with all these 17-20yr old guys starting to make some noise ?.*asterisk alert: his burfdayy is later in the year than I thought on oct 22nd, that's still nearly 22yrs old even tho its 3 months away almost..sort of.

So far, Tomic won titles, the other you say are making noise did not. Also, even Dimitrov did not win any titles until he was 22.
I know that.

First to get in quarters is Kevin Anderson.
Next is either Ivo Karlovic or Steve Johnson, they will play a 3rd set tie breaker to decide it.
Going down to the wire...
