I just want to say congratulations to Novak Djokovic for winning his second Wimbledon and 7th Slam. It wasn't easy, but he pulled through today. You could tell that all those Slam finals losses were clearly affecting him in the latter stages of the matches. Luckily, he dug deep and was able to finish the job. With this win, he is back to number 1 and he should be in great shape going into the US Summer hard court season.

As for Federer, what a gutsy performance from him. I thought after Djokovic broke him in the fourth set it was over. But, he fought back and was able to win the fourth set. Even though he served GREAT in this match, his return game was awful in the first three sets. If he would been more aggressive in his return game, he would probably won the match.

Another thing, this match makes me appreciate more on how great the Big Four truly are. I mean you have to play extra ordinary tennis just to win a set against these guys. Let's hope they could stay a little bit longer to appreciate how truly great these players are.

By the way, I was right. Djokovic was more likely to win the match after losing the first set than Federer winning the match after losing the first set.

Wonder will Mardy Fish officially retire at the US Open?

Admit it, you're trying to hijack the thread. Watch it now, there'll be 20 pages yapping about Mardy Fish and we'll all have forgotten the Wimbledon final. That's why you done it! :snigger

Well that's a given, Roger needed to win in 4 or less. Nole had more time to gather himself and he of all people knows how easy it can be to come back vs. Roger a set or 2 down.

The one shot that saved Djokovic today and it is very effective on grass is his serve. It might not be in Federer's serve, but he served very well in those crucial moments when he needed to.

Congrats to Novak and his fans. They've both had a few tough years.

BTW I'm not liking this silly gate. Make the player climb. I did wonder if Roger would use it if he had won. It's a little more dignified than a climb.

Thanks Iona. I hope Andy can get it together soon :). Tough loss for him in the quarters.

He's been consistent overall, but he hasn't been winning anything of late; been well over a year except for a couple Masters! Anyone can win those; even Stan on clay! :nono Going this long without a major has to be devastating! If he had lost this, he may not have recovered his confidence after losting FO so recently!!

Was getting ready for bed last night and heard in my heart, "Whatever it takes." Said a little prayer for Novak, that he would have that resolve when he played. Watching the match now and realizing what he had to do to win today, there have been a few tears welling up in my eyes.

He did it. And I am thankful.

no matter how you cut it, this was a monumental triumph for Novak. The fact that hevanquished the resilient grand champion of these grass courts makes it all the sweeter. There are analogies to be made with Rafa besting the great lion of SW19 six years ago. Now, the next step for Nole is trying to outdo Nadal on the Parisian red clay. If you can beat Rafa in Paris and Roger in London, well, ... you would be a very special player.

Or if Nadal can beat Djokovic in Australia then that would also be special feat;)

By the way, with this win, Djokovic has beaten Federer, Nadal, and Murray in Grand Slam finals. Federer is the only other player to beat the other members of the Big Four in Grand Slam finals.

I am still waiting for Nadal-Murray slam final...

I've known that Nole is a special guy since 2007. I don't know if I am more happy or relieved that he was able to win today, probably both. He never has an issue with his game on any particular surface, I keep telling that over and over again, his problems are in handling his emotions. But I love the guy because he is so emotional, I can easily relate to him.;) Well done Nole, it was not easy but I know you appreciate it that much more. Back to being No1e for Mastoor but I like the new nickname: No7e more.:D

Had he lost, it would have been really devastating for him, but it wouldn't have been the end of the world. He handles the losses and wins better than I and most people would have. He should have perhaps finished the match in 4, but against such a fierce competitor and champion, I am just glad Nole was able to win. I think it was a great final, both guys entertained us a lot and they should be given equal respect. :clap

Just wanted to say "thank you" to some of the nice people that left their messages here for me: Darth, AP, Denis, Donald:heart: and a shout to other Nole fans: Riot, nehmeth, herios....I am glad to have fiery Fiero in Nole's corner as well:D

Here are the stats of the match.

Novak Djokovic (SRB) Roger Federer (SUI)
13 Aces 29
3 Double faults 5
108 of 174 = 62 % 1st serves in 133 of 192 = 69 %
79 of 108 = 73 % 1st serve points won 102 of 133 = 77 %
43 of 66 = 65 % 2nd serve points won 26 of 59 = 44 %
124 MPH Fastest serve 127 MPH
116 MPH Average 1st serve speed 115 MPH
92 MPH Average 2nd serve speed 100 MPH
26 of 35 = 74 % Net points won 44 of 67 = 66 %
4 of 15 = 27 % Break points won 3 of 7 = 43 %
64 of 192 = 33 % Receiving points won 52 of 174 = 30 %
68 Winners 75
27 Unforced errors 29
186 Total points won 180

Fed wins in (Aces - Doublerfaults) with a score of 24 to 10.
Fed wins in (Winners - UFE) with a score of 46 to 41.

Fed's second serve points won percentage is bad. That seems to
be the only other stat that stands out that can explain the result may be.

I was thinking the same as I read through the numbers. He served well (69%), but it needed to be even higher (at least mid 70's) against an amazing returner/retriever like Djokovic, and the vulnerability when having to hit a second serve was a significant part of his undoing. Think of how many ROS winners Novak hit on Fed's second serve.

For Novak, what stands out are the net points: that he even came to the net 35 times, and won 26 of them. I suspect that's something Becker pushed, and rightly so.
The statistics on second serve usually show who was the better player off the ground and in this case reflect that Novak had a significant edge there. Just looking at the percentages you would probably even expect a rather comfortable win for Novak, but Roger's high first serve percentage kept it close.

Regarding the net points I think Novak chose the times to come in much better than he usually does. He didn't try any panic S&V on important points (not having to save a lot of break points probably helped in that regard) this time and was solid in putting away the easy volleys. I think his overheads actually have significantly improved this year as to me they look technically more sound than before and I can't think of a rememberable miss in 2014. Mostly choosing the right moments to come forward might have also denied Roger rhythm and feel on passing shots as he even missed most of the makable ones.

Also I think Roger and Novak are now the only pair that has beaten each other at every Grand Slam tournament.
