I am hoping for a Petra vs Serena final. Pova has no chance against Serena unless she is injured. That is primarily because they have similar games, but Serena is superior in every department.

One of these days, Pova will probably get a win over Serena. Maybe at AO where Serena has a history of being injured.

Nope, Maria is not capable of beating Serena. Maria just doesn't have the mental or athletic ability to do it. It has been said many times - Serena grew up hitting against Venus - someone who is a better athlete than Maria: almost as tall, moves better than Maria, Better serve than Maria's, hits as hard as Maria. For Serena Maria is just a lesser version of someone she grew up hitting against.

In addition, Serena is able to read what is happening on court and the new tactics that Pova tries to use. Serena can immediately adapt to what is going on and turn it on Maria. On the other hand, Maria can't adapt her game. Even when her coaches come down to try an help her think her way through it, it is obvious that she doesn't believe she can do it. With other players she listens to her coach with little to no response. With Serena she starts complaining to her coach about what is going wrong with her game. Maria knows it is useless.

It is also very embarrassing when a coach has to come down and tell a 5x major winner how to win a match. It's truly a damn shame and shows major weakness.

It really is shameful. I find it interesting that Pova allows her coach to come down...it just lends to the belief that she doesn't know how to handle Serena. And the conversations where (at least with Thomas Hog) she seemed to be throwing in the towel are just something you'd think she would not want anyone to hear. But as predictable as the outcome maybe, I still love the match up.

and they call her mentally tough..:nono..Serena has outwitted a lot of coaches even the big money coaches that have their own entourages....Sven came down several times during that Miami match and still couldnt solve the Serena puzzle.
if she wins it will be by walkover and she will scream wildly like she did after she beat a Sjogren Venus...I think she will sink to her knees like she did at RG..it will be like winning a slam going to hug her team ,,,,after the walkover...:laydownlaughing

I would like to make a comment regarding Maria's current coach Sven if I may.
I met him personally at a tournament many years ago,at the time he was helping out Woznicacki,he actually was a nice man to talk to.

I have noticed since he has started to coach Maria,he really has changed his persona, when I have noticed him in her box

Please dont take this comment out of context.Just a observation I am making, since he was helping Wozniacki,he appeared to me in her box, calm and controlled.

Sven is probably being paid a lot of money by that agent and is scared to lose his job.The way he cheers from the stands clearly says...fear.He was never like this when he was coaching Ana...now he is a bundle of nerves.,,,

You are correct to say win. She won't beat Serena because she doesn't have the tennis IQ to do it. Her coaches must feel some what embarrassed. I remember seeing Hogstedt (sp) run past Serena and glance at her after an on court visit with Maria. He was probably thinking - I hate you - you're going to get me fired, :lolz: And in those moments, coaching visit, Serena is probably thinking: you can come and talk to her until you are both blue in the face - nothing is going to change. lol. If you've noticed, often times Serena will beat Maria even worse after a coach visits. There is a recent interview of Maria (about 4 days or so ago). In it she admits that the constant beatings by Serena bother her and she wants to beat her. And she admits that every time she plays Serena she learns something because Serena plays at such a high level.

I never really understand how coaches could raise an athlete without backup plans to their game. I don't know much about the early training of players I guess.

Interesting that you made that observation. During the US Open series - the match between Ana Ivonavic (sp) and Maria, a couple of posters on tennis.com mentioned that when he came down to give Maria coaching, he said something to the effect of: "Oh come on Maria - this is Ana." I didn't hear it but some seemed to interpret his tone to be disrespectful to Ana, suggesting she shouldn't be a challenge for Maria. Especially because Sven use to coach Ana. Also interesting that Lindsay Davenport has mentioned, previously, while commentating a Pova match, that she has never seen such an experienced coach act like such a cheerleader for his charge. Lindsay's tone was of confusion/didn't understand why he would be acting this way. The person who was co-commentating (I think Brett Haber) said "maybe she has asked him to do it. Maybe it is what she needs." And we all know Maria is constantly looking at her box during play. So I agree that he is probably afraid that he could get fired. Thomas Hog, her former coach, said their number 1 goal was to beat Serena and they couldn't get it done. All of a sudden Hog was no longer her coach saying it was because he couldn't travel enough. I guess things changed because now he is traveling with Sloane. But maybe the travel is less.

To me making a goal to beat one player is fruitless, you should be working on a game that makes you unbeatable period.

With all the fast firings she's done in the last few years I'm sure he's basically trying to hold onto his job. These coaches are rotating lately quite quickly. I imagine they'd rather play stay with one player and actually build something. I don't know that it's easy to convince a player like Maria that she needs a big change in her game at this point. Im sure she's happy with what she's accomplished and cares largely about all the money coming in from endorsements. Of course she probably wants to win but for her to change her game to an adaptable by opponent, all court game at this point would be pretty radical.

did you notice how manic he was during pova s matches at RG.He tried to cheer hard when pova was playing Kerber at Wimbledon but Kerber s box was not having it they also stood up and out cheered Sven it was comical to see the two groups trying to out do each other...:laydownlaughing
Hogstedt never cheered all he did was tell her to wait for a choke..mentally tough my ass..:snigger

Congratulations to Makarova she has become the 2nd alternative player at Singapore

Cibulkova had to win her match at Moscow to qualify as the 2nd alternative player, seeing she was defeated by Vitalia Diatchenko (q) 46 62 62,Makarova was the next player in line as the 2nd alternative player at Singapore.

What a topsy turvy year for pocket rocket? She started with a finals at AO and ends the year out of top 10.

^ My thoughts regarding the Pocket Rocket, are she could not handle the pressure after she made the Top 10,you can tell by results after that period.

its sad to see Cibby fading like that, she played a lot at the beginning of the year to maintain notoreity. She should have made a better schedule and would have had a good finish to her season.
