Here are the scenarios:

Serena can clinch the No. 1 ranking if she goes 3-0 in round robin play and makes the final.
Serena can clinch the No. 1 ranking if she makes the final with a 2-1 record in round robin play and Sharapova loses at least one round robin match.
If Serena goes 1-2 in round robin play, then Sharapova needs to reach the final with 2-1 round robin record or win the title to have a chance.
If Serena goes 2-1 in round robin play, then Sharapova needs to reach the final with 3-0 round robin record or win the title to have a chance.
If Serena goes 3-0 in round robin play, then Sharapova needs to win the title and not see Serena reach the final to have a chance.

The last scenario is Masha's best chance, not having Serena on her way.
It may happen too, it did in Roland Garros and it did in Beijing. Masha really doesn't have to beat Serena to become #1

That would be the worst thing that can happen to Serena!

My predictions:

Red Group: Serena winner, Ana runner up.

White Group: Kvitova winner, Maria runner up.

Semifinals: Serena defeats Maria.
Ana defeats Kvitova.

Finals: Serena defeats Ana.

YE #1: Serena.

The problem, for everyone else, is that Serena loves it when she is playing the top players. She doesn't lose her focus the way she can in the early stages of an event. She likes dominating the "best." She likes proving she is the best. In her group (red), her head to head against the other three women is 11-1. The only loss to Ana Ivanovic when Serena was injured at AO this year. And the fact that Maria is in the running for number 1, Serena will be gunning. And the fact that the Russian official just made a nasty remark about her and Venus....Serena is probably looking for a Russian to punish for it.

Red Group play on Monday

Serena v Ana Halep v Bouchard

Note there hasnt been much talk regarding Halep's chances? there isnt any real pressure I feel for her,she will be able to come out swinging.

Tuesday White Group Maria v Caroline Petra v Aga.

Li Na will hit the ceremonial first ball at the WTA finals opening ceremony

Nice touch having Li for the opening, although I inagine it is disheartening she cannot compete.

Looks like I will not be sleeping much this coming week. Getting up at 4:30 each morning. Yikes.

Best of luck to all the players. I just want an injury-free event.

I would like to make some observations regarding the Red Group and White Group first matches

Serena will get a test in her first match against Ana,their matches of late, have had some tough moments,I feel Serena will be too strong at the end.

Halep to me has been the 'forgotten' player in this tournament, she is under the radar,to me she can come out swinging freely.Halep to defeat Bouchard,

I also believe Caroline has the tools to defeat Sharapova, she knows exactly what needs to be done, also she wont back down from the challenge. We all saw that when she defeated Maria at the USO this year.If Caroline brings that game,I believe she can win against Maria.

Petra v Aga Well Aga to me is in a real slump, apart from over playing at times, she always has some sort of tape on her body,I feel it is the ways she plays the game, she is a slight players, always has to battle against the Top hitters in our game.Petra is my Dark Horse in this tournament, this is Petra's fourth consecutive appearance at the YEC,Petra has a outstanding indoor record.Petra brings her current form at Singapore, watch out,she will be too strong for Aga in this match up

The thing that has made Ana a tough out for Serena for the most part this year is that Ana reads the Williams serve very well. So Serena, would be wise to mix her serve up and really go for placement against Ana. However like Serena, she has been dealing with leg issues. So, we will have to see how things proceed there.

The other two Genie and Simona will be interesting as they have both improved, and Serena has played neither this year. I don't think either has improved to a level where they can take Serena down, but I do think they can make matches interesting for Serena.

I think the other grouping is just as compelling. I think the two wild cards on that side are Petra and Wozniacki. It will be interesting to see how they come out this tournament.
