Domi needs to correct that insane Ball Toss for starters.I know she is short, still one day that ball wont come back down on court.Still using that high ball toss only adds to the problem I feel.

I did suggest she attend The Serena Williams Ball Toss Academy for starters.^

Only a hunch but I will go with Petra, even though my heart is with Eugenie, but she has little chance here. I have watched Petra on a few occasions, when she is mentally with it, that compliments all the physical ingredients she has, to win even over Serena.

It just occurred to me that three counterpunchers can wind up in the same group. The grouping can be very lop-sided.

Serena against Simona, Aga and Caro, worst case scenario for Serena?

Or it could be Masha against them 3

I don't think it will pan out that way, but who knows?

The countdown clock says 6 hours:

We are almost there!

Good observation 10sfan, hope it does not happen that way.

I don't follow your logic. She is 0 and 5 or 6 against Serena. Has she not been "mentally with it" every time she has played Serena? Petra has been playing very good tennis recently and couldn't even beat Sharapova - the number 2 player in the world.

It really is shameful. I find it interesting that Pova allows her coach to come down...it just lends to the belief that she doesn't know how to handle Serena. And the conversations where (at least with Thomas Hog) she seemed to be throwing in the towel are just something you'd think she would not want anyone to hear. But as predictable as the outcome maybe, I still love the match up.
and they call her mentally tough..:nono..Serena has outwitted a lot of coaches even the big money coaches that have their own entourages....Sven came down several times during that Miami match and still couldnt solve the Serena puzzle.
if she wins it will be by walkover and she will scream wildly like she did after she beat a Sjogren Venus...I think she will sink to her knees like she did at RG..it will be like winning a slam going to hug her team ,,,,after the walkover...:laydownlaughing
You are correct to say win. She won't beat Serena because she doesn't have the tennis IQ to do it. Her coaches must feel some what embarrassed. I remember seeing Hogstedt (sp) run past Serena and glance at her after an on court visit with Maria. He was probably thinking - I hate you - you're going to get me fired, :lolz: And in those moments, coaching visit, Serena is probably thinking: you can come and talk to her until you are both blue in the face - nothing is going to change. lol. If you've noticed, often times Serena will beat Maria even worse after a coach visits. There is a recent interview of Maria (about 4 days or so ago). In it she admits that the constant beatings by Serena bother her and she wants to beat her. And she admits that every time she plays Serena she learns something because Serena plays at such a high level.

I never really understand how coaches could raise an athlete without backup plans to their game. I don't know much about the early training of players I guess.
Probably because what Maria does works against the majority of the players she plays. And there is a reality that she is not a great athlete and trying to get her to do other things is a waste.

The groups look fairly even. I hope Aga plays well. I can't understand why she has fallen off the cliff this year. Maybe she is injured?

I split off the posts debating Sharapova, and put them in a separate thread:

http://www.tennisfrontier.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3101

Please continue that discussion over there, and honor this thread's purpose: to discuss Singapore.

Thanks.

The grouping favors Serena. Mainly because she didn't get Petra or Caro.
This is the worst case scenario for Masha, me thinks.

I would disagree that it favors Serena per se. On paper, they are all players she should dispatch with relative ease, but Serena could also just as easily under estimate her group. However, everyone in Serena's group has been plagued with injuries including Serena. That group will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I agree, and I don't know what difference Petra or Caro in Serena group would make much difference. She 0-3 against Caro this year, and she beat Petra pretty convincingly in last year tourney.

There will be many many more Singapore threads.

We will have daily threads covering the early stage and separate threads for each semifinal match and the final.
