What does it say about the EU that the countries are starting to close their intra-EU borders?

If we come out of this with minimal damage, everybody would complain that there was overreaction and nothing really happened while in fact the minimal damage could be due to overreaction.

Here is the problem with those who say this is an overreaction:

China
Italy

What has happened to these two countries in economic and health fronts who are on opposite sides of the globe. Literally.

The reason it’s not an overrreaction is because for better or for worse, this is the reality of the new global order where markets, economies, production and people are interlinked and codependent in a way not possible even a generation ago. You add social media and incompetent governments and a fragile health system and how is it a surprise that this world order is fragile and it’s vulnerability exposed for all to see.

The Emperor has no clothes.

You REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLY need to read up more on the topics you seem to feel so strongly about. It's becoming a theme. This is not like the regular flu. Please conduct some research. This is borderline irresponsible.

You are REAAAAAALLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY stupid and clueless about issue after issue. It's becoming a theme. But you are actually right about one thing.....this is not like the "regular flu."

According to the Surgeon General of the United States (Dr. Jerome Adams), it is actually less dangerous for children and young adults than the regular flu.

Surgeon General: Coronavirus Less Deadly Than Normal Flu For Children And Young Adults

SURGEON GENERAL JEROME ADAMS: "If you are a child or young adult, you are more likely to die from the flu, if you get it, than you are to die from coronavirus. So, there is something about being young that is protective."

Please conduct some research. You are not demonstrating borderline stupidity. You are demonstrating outright stupidity. (And if you disagree with Dr. Jerome Adams, you are being racist! He is one of America's most well-known African-American physicians, right up there with Ben Carson! But I get the feeling that Federberg is going to call Adams a "tin-foil conspiracy theorist.")

Jesus Christ, you still completely fail to grasp the point. You are a walking example of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Nothing more dangerus than someone who thinks they know more than they actually do. But I mean, you voted Trump. How's he dealing with this btw? (I'm sorry to all the forum members who will be subjected to Cali's defense of Trump's incompetent handling of the situation).

This pandemic might have one positive benefit. For years we've seen inflation rates manipulated in major countries to sell a lie that the cost of living is stable even though we know it really isn't. We have seen governments enact policies that explicitly benefit the rich to the detriment of everyone else because they argue that facilitating entrepreneurship will benefit all. It's hard to see how all of that will remain sustainable. This doesn't mean that Sanders like policies are the answer, but for sure something more focussed on the poorer majority seems to be the sensible course. You can't keep propping up businesses and forcing the pain on the masses. It's interesting that more and more of the billionaire class see this, and are arguing for change. This might just be the global trauma that settles the argument once and for all

Worldwide we now have over 200,000 cases with over 8,000 deaths. Countries as far and wide as Nigeria and UAE have announced travel bans... The world is shutting down. Given human psychology it's going to be tough to be the first place (country or sporting event) to re-open after this is over. No one will want to be accused of being reckless. This will just make matters worse for the global economy...

Honestly, if after all of this, people still don't realize how extreme capitalism is still the driving force behind everything, even in the middle of a pandemic, and that a more balanced approach is needed whereby the poor aren't completely fucking shafted, then they deserve everything that's happening.

Honestly the smartest take I've seen on this yet.

Well thanks for being logical and actually addressing the words of Jerome Adams, the Surgeon General of the United States. Instead of addressing those - which completely undermine your narrative - you instead resort to nothing except insult. It's funny how I have brought up actual dates, quotes from leading government officials, and statistics, and what does the wannabe scholar say? Absolutely nothing.

As for how Trump is handling the crisis: the Democratic governor of New York (Andrew Cuomo) has complimented him numerous times, CNN analyst Dana Bash complimented him, and Dr. Anthony Fauci (a leading member of the coronavirus task force) said that Trump's decision on February 2nd to enforce a travel ban was absolutely helpful in limiting the spread of the virus.

If Trump has screwed up, it has been in going along with the media narrative and supporting too many of the do-gooder policies of governors and corporate leaders. In that sense he has caved to the media narrative and I believe it was a grave mistake on his part. The media (including many on Fox News) have totally exaggerated the actual severity of the coronavirus.

But, for you dickface (i.e. BwokenWooFace), here are some headlines to answer your question. Read and learn, clueless one:

Hey idiot....Fox News *Ignores every point that counters my argument*

Hey Bwoken, you retarded bigot, Tucker Carlson of Fox News was the first major media figure in the United States to make a big deal out of the coronavirus. He was doing that back in January and early February while the New York Times and WaHo were focused entirely on impeachment. Get your facts straight. You associate Fox News with American parochialism (while of course demonstrating your own regional parochialism every time you utter an opinion), but Fox was the network reporting on coronavirus the most while the outlets that Tented and Moxie revere were obsessed over impeachment proceedings in the United States.

Of course, I pointed this out earlier and you simply ignored it, just as you ignored my post yesterday about how Democratic NY governor Andrew Cuomo complimented the Trump administration for its handling of the crisis. I don't entirely agree with Cuomo (like I said, I think the Trump administration has gone along far too much with the media narrative), but the point remains that you simply ignored that story. So please don't accuse me of ignoring inconvenient information. I more than anyone here address the totality of what others are saying to me, but being in the minority viewpoint I have much more to address and I can't always get to everyone. You actually epitomize a debater who simply ignores points that he can't refute.

So, again, you're welcome for the enlightenment. You have been learning a lot the last few days. :good:

Apparently you are totally unaware that 100,000 Chinese, largely from Wuhan, moved to Northern Italy in recent years to work in textile factories. That plus the old age of the Italian population is why Italy has been hit far harder than other countries in the West.

There isn't some indiscriminate mystical force spreading this virus as you are implying. There are very specific causal reasons and they mostly trace back to the Chinese government, which is somehow escaping criticism from bigoted parochialists like Bwoken who instead prefer to focus on Trump.

Give it time, other countries will be moving into the same sphere as Italy soon.

Yes, Italy has an older population, and that is a factor, but you keep burying your head in the sand about exponential contagion rates and the pressure it puts on health services.

Most of these draconian interventions are to slow the burden on health services, so they can actually treat more people who need it. If too many people need a finite number of ICU units at the same time, then people die. I don't know how this isn't obvious to you.

In NYC, they're trying to figure out where and how we'll deal with the number of cases that will be pending. Fed is sending a hospital ship. (They sent that ship to the Hudson River on 12 Sept., 2001. Sadly, we didn't need it.) Somehow it seems that it will take ages for that to get here. Don't know why...it came the day of/after Sept. 11th.

Sorry to make this bit political, but one of the things that NYC and NJ are looking at for space are recently closed hospitals. This is one of the reasons that I hated Bloomberg: we lost a lot of hospitals, particularly in Manhattan, that got turned into luxury condos. Same with nursing homes. Now we need hospital spaces as beds. They're considering using dorm rooms as quarantine spaces, and reopening old hospitals as care units. It's a shame that we lost so many hospitals in the first place
