It's good that you clarified the situation in the end, but I must say one of the things that I've always respected about you is that you're very front forward. This time you approached this issue in a very strange way that seems very unlike you. If you had explained yourself clearly from the start this would have seemed far less controversial, at least to me. Nothing comes before protecting family. We are not prohibited from traveling across states. Maybe that's different in the UK. And I have checked with my state and the one that I would travel to. Here's what I don't understand is different, and "selfish:" I can go out and run, keeping social distancing. I can go to the grocery store, keeping social distancing. If I can get to my family home in the north, likewise keeping social distancing, and then quarantining for 14 days, why is that different? I'm not swanning into my weekend home for a few days, or enjoying a day at the beach, just to get out of the house. I'm not even trying to get out of NYC to save myself. I'd rather stay home, tbh. But I have a sick relative. In order to help with her care, I have to get there, quarantine for 2 weeks, and then I can help. I would tell the local police I'm there, because I already alerted them when the house was empty. My neighbor has encouraged me to come. I don't need your permission or that of @Jelenafan to decide what I'll do. But I did think it was odd from you, so libertarian, to be so adamant on this point.
As for your comment about libertarians I think perhaps you misunderstand what we're about. We believe that government should be limited to non-existent in both our social and economic lives to the greatest extent possible, but we also very strongly believe in law and community. Perhaps more so than others in fact, because we believe that laws should be used to create the social infrastructure through which human action and endeavour enables us to progress. We believe this is the optimal way and not State coercion or theft. If scientists believe that social distancing and limited outside activity is what is needed to pull us out of this, and people wilfully disregard the guidance, then don't expect me to be anything but extremely hostile to those who would put their personal desires over the greater good. You would be terribly wrong to believe otherwise.
