Give del Potro some credit for heart. I still think he's the quality player, of the two.

I don't understand why you keep misinterpreting posts. I, You and million others think JMDP is better player of the two. But, my comment was that it must be embarrassing to lose to a sick JMDP and not to a regular JMDP. In fact, I even made that sick part explicit in my post.

Ask @I.Haychew. He doesn't even think JMDP was sick. But not to be snide: What I saw of the match it was competitive. If Thiem had lost in a lesser fight to a lesser player, maybe he should have been embarrassed. But it looked like a good fight, to me. I'm sure Dominic will rue the loss, but should it really be embarrassing to lose to this player, compared to some of the upsets on offer at this tournament? Regretful, yes. But you tell me: I didn't see the first 4 sets.

I keep saying it's not a "pass." It's only sympathy. But I hear where you're coming from now...you think he's a faker, no? Then I can't help you. Though I do think it's unlikely he'd fake himself 2 sets down just to gain sympathy from the crowd, only to get lifted up by the Argentines in the crowd. Let's say he wasn't sick, at all. He still came back from 2 sets down to win. That's an admirable comeback. Isn't that enough? You don't have to give him more than that.

Good point, Moxie! I DO think that del Potro is somewhat of a drama queen, but I don't think that he'd intentionally prolong a match just so he could win in five sets. I just happen to think that he wasn't on his death bed...and that Thiem totally choked.

I'm not rolling with A-P's idea that you are leading some kind of Federite clan, and you are welcome to bitch to your heart's content, though I think your comment that the USO had "rolled out the red carpet" for Rafa did start a bitch-fest. This tournament already lacked Murray, Djokovic and Wawrinka. And the young guns have been turning out some upsets. Given who wasn't playing and the upsets, it's been a pretty volatile tournament. But let's face it: you get in your digs and it does look like a set-up for you slagging it later, should your most hated one win. That is your MO. :)

The slowness of USO courts is actually more obvious than Wimbledon courts. Dareen Cahill even mentioned it a few times on ESPN.

I've heard it said, too. And not to reopen the whole thing, but my point to @DarthFed, was how contentious it is to say that it's about "rolling out the red carpet to Rafa." Then it's just crankiness.

If we're agreeing on all that, then we're cool. For sure Thiem is not going to sleep well tonight over lost opportunities. He had that match, as far as I can see. I was just defending that he had a worthy opponent, and when he blinked, he got skunked.

Just see the first two sets. You will know what was the state of JMDP. It almost looked like he will stop playing and shake hands.
He did not hit a single winner in the entire first two sets. After being 2 sets up and then losing to a sick JMDP is definitely an
embarrassment for a 7th seed.

One of my points is that JMDP is only lower-ranked by virtue of his injury off-time. Of the two, at the USO, JMDP has the pedigree.

Really. Why should del Potro get a pass? Thiem did choke. Being that I didn't see the Pouille match, I can't comment. My opinion is that don't think that del Potro was a "wounded warrior". I think that he pulled the 'ol rope-a-dope. If you're ill, then you're ill. I don't see how the support of the crowd can trump your illness/injury. Then again, like I said, I'm not a pro athlete. So I really can't relate. If del Potro actually fought through it and toughed it out, then kudos to him.

Did you see the match betweent Thiem and JMDP. Anyone who saw the first two sets know that there is clearly something wrong with JMDP. No one in the right mind (except may be Kyrgios or Monfils) will go to court tank first two sets and then would want to win the match (actually even Kyrgios cannot be accused of that, when he tanks he tanks the whole match).

You are still missing the point. Everybody agrees that JMDP has better pedigree and better HC player than Thiem despite the ranking. But, we are not talking about an ordinary JMDP today, but a sick JMDP (you clearly did not see the beginning of the match and so you fail to understand the gravity of the situation). It is certainly a huge embarrassment for Thiem today to lose to a sick JMDP.

I think I get that. I was arguing with I.Haychew about whether or not Del Po deserved sympathy for being ill and if that's a "pass." Sort of two different conversations. I do believe that I equated Thiem in an earlier post with Pouille who also couldn't dispatch an unfit Schwartzman. It's not exactly the same, but both were shooting at sitting ducks, and went very wide of the target. I absolutely get why Thiem will not sleep well tonight, but it was a big fight, once JMDP was let back in, I'm arguing for the credit to his fight and to his game. Does that make sense?

Yes, I saw the match. del Potro looked to be down and out...Then, del Potro miraculously healed, and Thiem choked.

I call BS. Regardless of chest size, bicep size, whatever else size...You think that you're in better shape than Nadal? He is a premier pro athlete. Measurements mean absolutely nothing.

I'm talking aesthetics not fitness obviously. I do only weights and don't claim in the slightest to be super cardiovascularly fit 'cos I'm not. Used to do a fair bit on the cross trainer but was losing too much muscle mass so I stopped. In terms of aesthetics though, there's no comparison.

Aesthetics mean nothing. Look at Federer...His right forearm dwarfs his right bicep, yet his forehand is one of the most potent shots in tennis.

Who are you to say that Schwartzman is unfit!? How do you know?

Again, nothing in my post was to do with fitness or tennis related at all. Was merely replying to AP's post that I'm somehow jealous of Nadal's biceps eventhough I have much more muscle mass than him and look aesthetically way better. Not being full of myself, just calling a spade a spade 'cos I wouldn't consider Nadal in his current shape to look good in any way. He used to look much better than he does now till around 2008 and it's all gone downhill since then. Still, a tennis player can't expect to look as good as someone who primarily trains with weights only on a consistent basis. Different kettle of fish altogether.

The trainer came and gave him some medicine during 1st set itself. Perhaps, it started working in time for the third set.
The meds had to "kick" in for JMDP to change from the walking dead to the energizer bunny. However, the trend for him lately is to follow up a great victory with a dud of performance the next round. Roger should be able to dispatch him very routinely.

As for the guy Rafa is playing , I never heard of him which means Rafa will most likely will struggle again.
