If FAA loses this one, it will be the 5th time in the last two years that he's gone out in a Slam 1R. I bet he wishes he could dial back to 2022 and re-start from there.
Yup. He's shockingly poor at slams. I haven't bet in ages but it definitely would've been a great one. Everyone's saying the same thing.

Mensik is a real talent. Not sure what his upside is, but he's one of the better "post-Alcaraz" young guys on the radar, and further along than Fonseca. I suspect that next year will be similar to what Fils did last year - establish himself in the top 40 or so.
Using the September 1-August 31 birthday cycle (like in US schools), the 2005-06 cohort (Mensik, Learner Tien, Matthew Forbes, Fonseca) might be even better than the 2002-03 cohort (Shelton, Rune, Alcaraz). It's going to be interesting to see where each of these groups of players are in 3 years time. Is Alcaraz still on top, or has one of the current 18-year-olds (who will be 21) have caught Alcaraz?

Fils is very good, but not great, and I don't see anyone else in the 20-year-old cohort (2003-04) that is promising.

Yeah, it is too soon to tell on those young 'uns, but so far there is promise. But I can't tell you how many times I've pin-pointed a teenager creeping up into the top 200, but then they fall flat and/or stagnate in the 100-200 range.

I haven't seen much about Tien or Forbes, except mention of their names and showing up on the "Not Yet X" rankings:

That page is how I usually first notice guys.

FIls and Tien have a total age of 38 - that's Rafa's age. I wonder when the last time a Grand Slam match was played by two players totally under 40 years old. I'm sure not long ago, even this year, but it is a rare instance.

Unless Rune has a great Asian/indoor swing, he will more than likely miss ATP Final in Turin this year. It might be a blessing in disguise as he really needs a longer off-season to recalibrate on both of his short-term and long-terms goals as a player. Next year will be crucial for him in terms on where his trajectory as a player will lead him, imo. Yes, he is ”only” 21 years old (turning 22 in April 2025), however, he can’t continue to have these types of results.
