I know. I was part of that grief club. She was entirely too heavy to play tennis. No way you can effectively get behind the ball carrying that much weight.

If she rushes the net so often like today, she will lose even more weight!

I personally am happy to see someone, actually anyone, execute S&V and succeed.

Gauff has a chance for a more routine win. She could use it. Go, Coco!

Gauff has gone really tight on her serve.

Helluva an escape for Gauff on that service game. She leads 3-2. Hope that game and the crowd gets her through.

It takes real athletes! It's a joke they're calling some of these players "athletes" just because they're running around a court, slapping a ball with a racket! That's an oversimplification IMO! True athletes can improvise, change the course of their match by sheer will exercising that athleticism! OTTH the match-up that epitomizes what I'm talking about; Navratilova vs Mandlikova! No other player gave Martina more heartburn than Hana who could be the "best player on the planet" at any given time! Check out their 1985 SF at the Virginia Slim Champ. YE (Video)! They had some amazing points with balls traveling quite fast for the time with net play that exemplified their athleticism!

She has a real chance against Naomi. She already played Halep (a recent #1 and GS champ). I think she learned from that match. I believe she will compete better than that loss to Simona.
And Naomi has been playing from behind for a while now. Naomi has the pressure of the defending champion, and Gauff has nothing to lose. If I were to lay money....

Just like Cincy, the women matches are much more interesting to watch than the men thus far

If all things holds true, Osaka will win in straight sets. CoCo game's is more defensive whereas Naomi is an offensive minded beast. Again, go back to Naomi encounter with the dreaded one, Su Wei( nobody wants to play her because she is such an amazing but extremely extraordinary difficult player to play against). Osaka won that battle but both players lost the War..Su Wei retired in her doubles match later that evening and Osaka's knee was stressed so bad that she had to retire against Kenin after she blew her off the court in the 2nd set. If Osaka's knee is still jaded , CoCo may edge her out in 3 sets.

Whatever happened to the original Coco. Is she retired or lowly ranked to make it to MD? She is not too old to retire. Or is she in an injury break.

Vandeweghe? Returned from injury break in July. she played this tournament with protected ranking ... lost to Kenin 1R, and is in doubles tomorrow with BMS

TC showed her playing doubles (with BMS) during Cincy ... she played several warmup tournaments - main draw at Silicon Valley+ Bronx and qualies Cincy

missed time with injury from end of last season until around July iirc

Edit: online google leads to stuff about ankle surgery
