WELL my my! Taylor Townsend comes of age. Kobe Bryant in the crowd. And Townsend was ... not phenomenal. But was very solid. Played her game. Serve and volley. And never went away from it. Had the courage to stick with it, even after it wasn't good enough in the first set. But kept it up. Got passed plenty. But as the second and third sets went on she got passed less and less. Halep started missing more. The fact that she kept coming in seemed to get to Halep. She started not even getting it over the net. Townsend started getting some great returns on Halep's serve. Especially the second serve. Got the third set break which probably just made sure she was able to stay in it a bit longer. And it was long enough. Got to the tiebreak. And they split the first 8 points. But Townsend got the last 3. Halep wasn't terrible. But Townsend found a secret passage way around Halep's nearly unbeatable play these days. Still. Halep didn't win in Canada or Cincy. So it's not like she's dominated the hard courts this year.
Halep has still had a huge year. Winning her second slam. This time Wimbledon. This loss actually fits so many of Halep's losses though. When she loses, it's often very close.
Biggest win of Townsend's career. Through to the third round. Had to qualify this year. Mentions her match point against Bertens at Wimbledon. Probably gave her quite a bit of confidence. And now she found the courage to go for it against Halep.
Wow. And her on court interviewer (Stubbs?) just said she came into the net over 100 times. Seriously taking it back.
Meanwhile, Ostapenko has beaten Riske. After losing in the first round at every slam this year, she's back into the third round of a slam since the US Open last year.
