Yep,old school tennis though it worked, she deserved it,she could have folded when she got broken serving for the match, she played under great pressure in the t/break and won.A well deserved win.

Agreed she deserved it, was rooting for her to pull it off with that strategy! Felt like another Lauren Davis situation after the DF serving for it at 5-4, awesome upset

WELL my my! Taylor Townsend comes of age. Kobe Bryant in the crowd. And Townsend was ... not phenomenal. But was very solid. Played her game. Serve and volley. And never went away from it. Had the courage to stick with it, even after it wasn't good enough in the first set. But kept it up. Got passed plenty. But as the second and third sets went on she got passed less and less. Halep started missing more. The fact that she kept coming in seemed to get to Halep. She started not even getting it over the net. Townsend started getting some great returns on Halep's serve. Especially the second serve. Got the third set break which probably just made sure she was able to stay in it a bit longer. And it was long enough. Got to the tiebreak. And they split the first 8 points. But Townsend got the last 3. Halep wasn't terrible. But Townsend found a secret passage way around Halep's nearly unbeatable play these days. Still. Halep didn't win in Canada or Cincy. So it's not like she's dominated the hard courts this year.

Halep has still had a huge year. Winning her second slam. This time Wimbledon. This loss actually fits so many of Halep's losses though. When she loses, it's often very close.

Biggest win of Townsend's career. Through to the third round. Had to qualify this year. Mentions her match point against Bertens at Wimbledon. Probably gave her quite a bit of confidence. And now she found the courage to go for it against Halep.

Wow. And her on court interviewer (Stubbs?) just said she came into the net over 100 times. Seriously taking it back.

Meanwhile, Ostapenko has beaten Riske. After losing in the first round at every slam this year, she's back into the third round of a slam since the US Open last year.

Halep has never done well at the USO in the last couple of years this is the first time since 2016 she has moved to the 2nd round. It has not been a good GS for her.

Maybe the reason for that is she's mainly a defensive player and by the time USO rolls around, she's exhausted mentally and physically. Besides, she doesn't do well after winning a slam. When she won RG last year she kind of fell off for awhile until she won Wimby this year.

Well good on Bertens for coming back. Poor from Pavyluchenkova to let it happen. Was up 5-2. Loses 5-7 4-6. Making the third round is actually Bertens best performance here I think. So matches that.

Was glad to see Puntintseva beat Sabalenka. I don't dislike Sabalenka. But since she beat Vika I wasn't going to root for her. And Putintseva has been plugging away this year and deserves good results she's earned.

Bencic finishes off Cornet. I still think she's in a nice spot in the draw and could win this thing. Coming in under the radar. And I think she likes it there. And I think it's usually a good place for most players. Has that going for her. She's never played Kontaveit though and Kontaveit has perhaps been a little hotter of late. But if she can get passed her, she can definitely hang with and beat Osaka. Assuming Osaka beats Gauff/Babos.

TP, I really thought playing serve and volley during the TBR was extremely extraordinary too risky but as she said, F it , I'm going for it. If Taylor's emotional interview doesn't touch your soul, then you surely have a black heart.

Though she won Wimbledon, she didnt play that defensive there did she, still I see your point.

She had to go for it AP. When she plays not to lose, she doesn't win so she needs to stay aggressive and determine her result

Well. She lost to Sharapova 2 years ago. Kanepi last year. Before that she made the quarters in 2016 (l. Serena) and the semis in 2015 (l. Panetta). And before that, it's not too many poor losses either. I've always felt like she just ran into inspired players here. Or players bigger than her who could out hit her on the hard courts where her defensive skills are less effective. And I mean. The list reads like that. Serena, Kanepi, Sharapova, Lucic-Baroni, Petrova, Panetta twice and even Jankovic. Panetta and Jankovic the two least big hitting of the group. But both great players.

She had no business losing to Pova in 2017 w/ Maria coming back from drug suspension. That was a really poor effort to me.
