Tied as Roger and Rafa are at the hip, this argument will go on forever.

Here are the new ATP race rankings that will be released tomorrow, the 18th of Aug.

1 Novak Djokovic SRB 7430
2 Rafael Nadal ESP 6650
3 Roger Federer SUI 6160

4 Stan Wawrinka SUI 4365
5 David Ferrer ESP 3445
6 Milos Raonic CAN 3245
7 Grigor Dimitrov BUL 3155
8 Tomas Berdych CZE 3150
9 Andy Murray GBR 2795
10 Kei Nishikori JPN 2475
11 Jo Wilfried Tsonga FRA 2375
12 Ernests Gulbis LAT 2355

The big three have officially qualified. Stan has an inside route due to his GS win.
Hence, there are only 4 available slots. It looks like Ferrer and Milos will make it
due to their ability to consistently beat folks they are supposed to beat. It also looks
like Kei will not make it due to his health issues and Gulbis will not make it due to
consistency issues.

If the above assumptions are true, then Murray, Berdych, Tsonga and Grigor are
fighting for the remaining two slots.

Someone of those who have not yet qualified will clinch a SF spot at the USO at the minimum. That will give him a big leap in this race. In case there are big surprises, there could be more "leapers".
Ferrer with his top 4 seed has the upper hand, let's see if he will take advantage, like he many times does.

No movement this week at the top as the top 14 players in the race did not play
this week. Expect a major shake-up to occur after USO and also for Stan to officially
qualify.

I could be wrong, but I think by virtue of his Australian Open title, Stan's already "in like flint!" The next question is will Nadal play even w/o his point total, enough that he owns FO?

That is true, but the ATP will not announce officially a player that he is qualified by default virtue his slam win, until the very end in case he does not make it otherwise by his cumulated points. But Stan is going to make it by points as well, because his total will be more than enough when all is said and done.
The battle ground is below him in the current 5-12 range.

ALERT:

In view of Novak's loss at SF today, if Federer wins USO, he will be #1 in the ATP race rankings after USO. He will have a good chance to finish at YE #1. It is not a pipe dream.

Currently 12th in live rankings and 12 by reaching the final as of next week. Number 9 if he wins I believe.

WTF Situation:

As everybody knows Rafa, Novak and Roger have already officially qualified. While not
officially qualified, Stan is virtually certain to qualify and that too by accumulating enough
points needed to qualify.

What this means is that whoever wins USO on Monday will get an inside track
(they don't need to accumulate enough points, just finish within top 20, which they
both are aleady) to make it to WTf.

This leaves only three slots open for the rest of the blokes to fight it out.

Seven players competing for the four remaining slots.

They are in order Nishikori, Ferrer, Berdych, Raonic, Grigor, Cilic and Murray.

Murray is the last contender. He needs to outperform three others to make it.

Turning attention away from the qualification scenario, there is another interesting
tussle out here for the YE #1. The only three contenders for that seem to be Novak,
Rafa and Roger. Novak is considerably ahead of the other two who are close to each
other in point count. With Novak expected to miss one big Masters tournament,
it looks like all three will be close to each other in point count.

YE #1 is going to be a three horse race and will be settled only in WTF
adding more intrigue to the rest of the season and to the WTF itself.
