Here are the new ATP race rankings that will be released tomorrow, the 18th of Aug.

1 Novak Djokovic SRB 7430
2 Rafael Nadal ESP 6650
3 Roger Federer SUI 6160

4 Stan Wawrinka SUI 4365
5 David Ferrer ESP 3445
6 Milos Raonic CAN 3245
7 Grigor Dimitrov BUL 3155
8 Tomas Berdych CZE 3150
9 Andy Murray GBR 2795
10 Kei Nishikori JPN 2475
11 Jo Wilfried Tsonga FRA 2375
12 Ernests Gulbis LAT 2355

The big three have officially qualified. Stan has an inside route due to his GS win.
Hence, there are only 4 available slots. It looks like Ferrer and Milos will make it
due to their ability to consistently beat folks they are supposed to beat. It also looks
like Kei will not make it due to his health issues and Gulbis will not make it due to
consistency issues.

If the above assumptions are true, then Murray, Berdych, Tsonga and Grigor are
fighting for the remaining two slots.

Another thing to be noted is that suddenly, the year end #1 has become wide open
and could be attained by any of the members of big three. There is only a 780 point
difference between Novak and Rafa and only a 490 point difference between Rafa
and Roger. With Rafa being in physical vacation and Novak being in mental vacation,
there is a chance that Roger might sneak in to finish the year as #1 especially
if he wins USO and/or WTF.

The better Federer plays, the easier life is for Nadal.
I always view Federer as one of Nadal's weapons, because when Federer is playing well he eliminates Djokovic (if Federer and Djokovic are in the same half).
And if Federer is in Nadal's half it gives Nadal an exhaustion-free semi :spacecadet:

And this year especially because Djokovic is defending champion of the indoor events, and we know how dominant Federer can be indoors (he didn't lose a match after 2011 US Open, until 2012 AO Naderer SF) which will hopefully culminate in another Naderer Final at the World Tour Finals.

One more note of interest: With this year's qualification Fed has continuously qualified for
the WTF for 13 years ina row (starting from 2002) and this is a record for most consecutive
appearances in the WTF. Previous record of 12 was held jointly by Lendl and Federer.

Rafa's withdrawal from the US Open means that Roger will almost certainly surpass him in the Race to London rankings after the tournament, although he's still got a ways to go to catch Rafa in the live rankings.

But there's a chance that the #1 ranking will be decided at the WTF, which is always fun - unless, of course, Novak wins the USO and/or sweeps Shanghai and Paris, and then I think he'll be able to coast in.

And so it continues; Rafa being touted as "The GOAT," but unable to defend titles off of clay! He was due another one of his famous vacations, skipping another major; as usual! I've never seen a top player have such an uneven career; esp. someone of Rafa's caliber!

Huh? No one used the "G" word here but you, my friend.

It's used all the time; just not on this page! McEnroe has succumbed to that notion! He touts him all the time; can't even listen to him anymore! :nono :puzzled  - Tread lightly! Not in any mood to play word games! I have my opinion and you better respect it as you would of yours!

I respect your opinion. I was just surprised to see you refer to it when no one had in this thread (at least not recently; I didn't read back through the whole thing).

As for McEnroe, I think a lot of people either have already lost a lot of respect, if not all respect. He's become a parody of himself over the past few years, so I don't take him seriously. Everything he's currently watching is always described in the superlative: "Player X has the best forehand in the history of the game." "Player Y is the greatest retriever I've ever seen." "Player Z has the best serve our sport has ever seen." etc.

^ One of his co-commentators should just challenge his stupid comments with a "you cannot be serious?!"

Fiero, I don't know whether Rafa is the GOAT or not, but he's certainly in the conversation. As I've said before, I'd prefer to just speak of plural GOATs rather than the singular GOAT.

Denial of the term being used gets me worked up though; either way! It's hard for me to give Nadal full credit for his achievements because of his inconsistency even playing a full 2 seasons consecutively! Besides that, dropping his numerous FO titles, he has 2 USO's, 2 Wimbledons, and just the 1 AO! Impressive for the most part, but hardly GOAT worthy! Players like Borg, Sampras, Federer, and even Lendl had plenty of other titles! Nadal's king of the Masters1000, but that's all I'll give him!

Oh, and he has more GS titles than Lendl and Borg, and level with Sampras, and closing in on Federer. But apart from this, I agree with you.
