Crikey. Rafa is in a slump and he's still top of the race...

In the new ATP race rankings to be released tomorrow, once again there are no new faces.
The only change is that Stan and Novak switched positions i.e, cream is raising to the top.
Andy is now within a striking distance at position #9. Looks like Andy may get his act
together and play in London eventually (hope not at the expense of younger guys
Grigor and Kei).

1 Rafael Nadal ESP 4470
2 Novak Djokovic SRB 4050
3 Stan Wawrinka SUI 3635
4 Roger Federer SUI 2930
5 Tomas Berdych CZE 2555
6 Kei Nishikori JPN 2125
7 David Ferrer ESP 1980
8 Grigor Dimitrov BUL 1805

It would be awesome for Kei and Grigor to make it to London, but I also hope Andy gets there, too. Personally, I wouldn't cry if Berdych didn't make it.

My preferred line up for London would be Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Wawrinka, Murray, Raonic, Dimitrov and Ferrer. Sadly though, Berdych will take at least one of those spots away, probably at the expense of Dimitrov but the other 7 I've named I reckon will make it.

I don't want Raonic. I will instead take Kei. I am not particular about Ferru either.
I would prefer a healthy Haas or another youngster in his place.

How come people aren't keen on Ferrer?

For one thing the last time he made the WTF he lost every match so it'd be nicer to watch someone actually make a bigger dent than that having worked hard to make it there in the first place.

There are no changes in the top 8 spots of the Race Rankings that will be released this
Monday, the 26th of May. This is to be expected as big guns do not usually play on the week
before Grand Slam Events.

However, Andy Murray got pushed back to #10 as Gulbis advanced to #9 in the
race, thanks to his title in Nice.

Fed will overtake Stan now if he gets to the semis of Garros. If Berdych reaches the final he'll overtake Stan, obviously both those things can't happen as Fed and Berd are seeded to face off in the QFs.

Nishikori in 6th will lose ground after his loss. Ferrer needs last 16 to overtake him, Dimitrov needs QFs, Gulbis would need SFs, then the likes of Fognini, Murray, Cilic would have to reach the final.

Murray within touching distance of catching up now. I'm pretty sure he'll get in along with the current top five. Last two spots between Ferrer, Gulbis, Nishikori, Raonic, Dimitrov etc. Time for one of the "young" guns to step up and "out-consistent" David if more than one of them is to make it.

My money would be on Raonic to make the final 8. Grigor seems too inconsistent and Kei is bound to miss time or play poorly due to injuries. Maybe Ernests, but he's not quite a young gun.

16 June:

1 Nadal, Rafael (ESP) 6,465
2 Djokovic, Novak (SRB) 5,250
3 Wawrinka, Stan (SUI) 3,735
4 Federer, Roger (SUI) 3,360
5 Berdych, Tomas (CZE) 2,960
6 Ferrer, David (ESP) 2,340
7 Nishikori, Kei (JPN) 2,225
8 Gulbis, Ernests (LAT) 2,220

Nishi is now 7, switching with Gulbis.

Below these, the next 3 places unchanged: Murray, Dimitrov, Raonic...

This is roughly the halfway point of the season, by the way, with 2 slams played and 2 to come. 5 MS titles won: 4 to play for, plus the WTF...

I can't believe Ferrer is still so high up, he doesn't seem to have actually done anything of note.

Ferrer has never been a splashy, colorful headline-maker. More like the tortoise, gradually making his way to finish lines.

As you can see from his playing activity:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Top-Players/David-Ferrer.aspx?t=pa

he's been steadily averaging making the quarters and semis (sometimes better, sometimes worse) of most events.

Poor Ferrer -- he could rescue orphans from a burning hospital, and there would still be people complaining about something. ;)

I'm not particularly complaining, I've grown to like Ferrer, but for the entertainment value you must admit he can get a bit tiring as you've always known what you'll get with him.

News Flash: according to live rankings page, Rafa has become the first one to officially
qualify for the WTF.

At present, the cut off stands at 5980 and Rafa has 6650 pts in the race.
Novak will also officially qualify if he wins just one more match at Wimby.
Fed will have more work to do to officially qualify even if he wins Wimby.

ATP does not have an article on this yet. They will come out with one immediately
after Wimbledon.

Finally, a quick reminder that the cut off (which currently stands at 5980) will
keep decreasing as the weeks progress and will probably be at around 3600
when the dust settles.

It is exciting that Grigor is currently #6 in the Race to London rankings. If he beats Novak tomorrow he'll be #5. Either way, he's got a great chance of making the WTF.

Rafa, Novak, Stan, and Roger are all but in - each with 4000+ points. After that it is going to be a dog-fight for the last four slots, with seven players--Berdych, Dimitrov, Murray, Nishikori, Ferrer, Gulbis, and Roanic--all within 800 points of each other, between 3050 and 2250.
