As I said above, the cut-off for the WTF is usually around 3,500 points. There's a few new names in this list staking an early bid...

At this time, as per the live ATP race rankings page, the mathematical guarantee to qualify
for WTF is 6600 points and no one has yet qualified.

Keep in mind that this cut off figure (which stands at 6600) will keep reducing
as time progresses. It is not a fixed figure. The cut off figure is calculated to
be the least number of points a player need to accumulate so that he is guaranteed
to be in the top 8 and thus qualify for the WTF, independent of what happens in
all future tournaments.

6600? How did you calculate that?

I think we'd need to go back a lot of years to find one where that many points was number eight in the world. Is that a maths average?

As I mentioned before, this is the cut off figure at this time and it will keep decreasing as
time progresses and more and more torunament results are in.

At this time, they can mathematically say that not more than eight different players
can get more than or equal to 6600 points each, by the time Paris ends, independent of
whichever way the cookie crumbels in all the remaining tournaments and who plays
in what tournaments.

Traditionally, they don't release a new set of rankings in the middle of IW, Miami or
Grandslams. The rankings (in both regular and race) remain static for official purposes
during the two weeks.

I did not calculate that. I got it from live rankings page.

But, it now says that the cut off is 6735. As the cut off can only decrease with time and
cannot increase (by definition), they goofed off somewhere in their calculations (most probably
the current one is right).

The ATP site also keeps track of these numbers, but not in real time.

Yes, that is from where we get it most of the time. But, as they change only the latest
is available there, not the old ones. When we record it here and look it at the end of the
year as to how things changed it will be fun.

Here are the top 8 in Race as of Monday, the 17th March 2014

1. Stanislas Wawrinka SUI 2380
2. Roger Federer SUI 2010
3 Rafael Nadal ESP 2000
4 Novak Djokovic SRB 1690
5 Tomas Berdych CZE 1685
6 Marin Cilic CRO 1000
7 David Ferrer ESP 990
8 Grigor Dimitrov BUL 970

The two Swiss blokes head the list. Novak enters (or reenters?) the list.
Only member of Big Four not registering in the radar is Andy. He is at 11 right
now, below Dog and Fog.

At this time, it looks like the top 5 in the above list would make it to WTF and there
are three slots which are kind of wide open.

With JMDP possible gone for the rest of the year, with Murray in a funk and
Ferrer having possible injury issues and Tsonga out of form, this may be a good
year for as many as three new faces to make it to WTF (Grigor, Cilic and Isner:
Are you listening?)

seems so odd, i had to stop over here for this one. i reckon it must've been a while since two compatriots led that sort of ranking (official or inofficial). and from a country of just 8 million!

Here are the current standings as of Monday, the 31st of March.

1. Novak Djokovic SRB 2690
2. Rafael Nadal ESP 2600
3. Stanislas Wawrinka SUI 2470
4 Roger Federer SUI 2190
5 Tomas Berdych CZE 2045
6 Alexandr Dolgopolov UKR 1130
7 David Ferrer ESP 1080
8 Kei Nishikori JPN 1025

Things are slowly beginning to stabilize. It looks like the top 5 in the
above list have distanced themselves from others.

Nishikori and Dog make their debut in the top 8 race. Andy Murray
has 1000 points and is at position 11 behind Black Heart and Marin Cilic.

"tented" points out that the ATP rankings page even archieves the race standings after every week.
As a consequence, I am not going to bother to maintain the race rankings religiously in this
thread henceforth.

However, folks may choose to use this thread to discuss race (no, not black and white)
related issues.

the first time in 2014 when the new list comes out on Monday.

Here are the top 8 in race that will become official tomorrow, the 7th of April.

1 Novak Djokovic SRB 2690
2 Rafael Nadal ESP 2600
3 Stanislas Wawrinka SUI 2470
4 Roger Federer SUI 2320
5 Tomas Berdych CZE 2045
6 Alexandr Dolgopolov UKR 1130
7 David Ferrer ESP 1080
8 Andy Murray GBR 1065

The important change of this week is the entry of Dunblane Warrior in the top 8 for
the first time in 2014. Andy currently sucks and will continue to suck until at least the
end of clay season. So, he may be in and out of top 8 during the next couple of
months. However, I think he will retain his place in top 8 and gain entry to WTF.

The top 5 in the list above have clearly separated themselves from the rest
of the pack and I expect them to stay put in the top 8 and make it to WTF.

So, basically two slots (the ones currently held by Dog and the Beast) are
up for Grabs. Beast has openly said that age is catching up to him and so it
may be time for him to fade off. Dog is certainly consistent in the first 3 months.
Can he maintain his consistency for the whole year? If so, he will surely make it.

Other contenders looking in from outside are Samurai, Drug Addict, Black Heart and Head Case.
I root for Dog to stay in and Black Heart to make it.
