Great for Sock. He could meet Wawrinka in the 3rd round, beat him, keep going and jump into the Top 20 by the end of the year! OK, I'm getting ahead of myself a bit here...

All of a sudden, the United States has 3 guys in the top 31 in the rankings! We definitely don't have a star, but a couple guys are starting to get more consistent and move up the rankings. I'm looking forward to seeing how Isner and Sock perform this week in Paris, and I'm ready to see how things pan out over the next year or so.

Was watching the one match with Sock and one of the player/commentators was saying he expected Jack to make top 20 and possibly top ten in a couple of years. Not sure I have that much faith, but the kid is a fighter and that forehand can do some damage.

If Querrey was able to get into the top 20 a few years ago, so will Jack. Top 10 is a stretch at this point, but if he will work hard on his BH the next few years, it will be possible.

^ good for all of them!

I want to add that Nole has 171 weeks at #1 now and it is the 5th most in the open era.

There is also a change in the doubles rankings, Marcelo Melo is now #1 doubles player (individually), replacing Bryan Bros at the top:

Sock has most potential of current American crop, but unlikely top 10 material. I haven't been following up and comers from US much, but I've heard of next gen kids: Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Stefan Kozlov....and some say they could blossom into potential top 10....? Would love to see a Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe, Chang, or even Roddick emerge soon...it's getting depressing!

I agree! But those young names you listed. There is some real potential there and we just might see another Sampras-Agassi-Courier-Chang in the bunch. Got to keep hoping! This can't last forever!

Can it?

Welcome, samt!

Even a roddick would be welcome. The US has been developing good Eastern European girls for a long time, and of course the WS are stellar, but in the men's game, it's still a mystery...

I have no sympathy. Here in the U.K, we had to wait almost 80 years for a men's grand slam champ. You've only been waiting 12 years, and you're already complaining! ;):)

But seriously, imagine if you still hadn't had a grand slam champ on the men's side in 2079. (And you hadn't had a slam champ of either gender since 2044!) That's how it was for us in 2012.
And then imagine an American guy finally won one. Imagine how you would feel.
Well, that's how we feel about Andy!

Now, it is guaranteed that Rafa cannot get a top 4 seeding for AO. He is at #5 right now and has no chance of becoming number 4 in time for AO. But, he has tremendous chances of doing so by the time RG comes around.

Way too early to make such predictions. Those players around 18 or so have lots of time to develop and get better, but the question will always be how far they can go.
US tennis establishment has several times shoot himself in the foot: D. Young, or R. Harrison.
Some of these young players could have a similar destiny, becoming just an average player, therefore it is wiser not to expect too much at this time.
By the way, I am seeing inconsistencies in Tiafoe and Donaldson results, like losing to much lower ranked players, therefore, let's just have patience and wait.

Andy is right now 1130 points ahead of Federer, after Bercy tourney. In order to transform the virtual #2 into actual year end #2, here is what he needs to do.

a. If Andy wins two RR matches in WTF, then Andy is guaranteed to end up as YE #2, even if Fed becomes the undefeated champion at WTF.

b. If Fed loses at least one match in London (even if he becomes the champion), Andy need to win just one RR match to guarantee #2 finish.

c. Assuming Andy can win 2 live singles rubbers in Belgium and UK wins DC, that will fetch Andy 225 points (2*75 for the two singles rubber and 75 points team bonus). In that case, Andy does not even have to play in London to guarantee #2 finish, assuming Fed loses at least one match in London.

I could have sworn I heard the commentators of the TCC say that Federer will end up #2! Either my hearing's going or they're totally mistaken! Maybe they know something we don't know about Murray playing YEC or not due to pending DC final against Belgium! Anyone?? ;-)

Even if Andy skips somehow the YEC, Roger has to win that event to reclaim the #2.
At this point, Andy is almost sure will finish #2.
Roger lost the plot on the Shanghai-Paris axis.
