Nadal is now N°9

Yes, he is inching forward. At this rate, I would not be surprised if he becomes #1 in nine more years. :snicker

He's 6th in the Race, even while having a lousy year. I think it likely he'll overhaul at least Federer and Berdych by the end of the season, but maybe one or two other players, as well... :popcorn

...and this makes what difference in the grand scheme of things? Will Rafa be rested enough to actually take the WTF near the end of his career? So far it's been a trainwreck at the end of each season; actually losing all 3 of his RR matches back in 2009! That was one of those strange events where 2 top players with 2 wins didn't make the SF; Murray and Djokovic! :puzzled :nono :cover

Roger can outplay Rafa in his sleep during the Fall. Rafa's last chance to do anything lies in the next few tournaments. He's always garbage come indoor season.

Let's wait and see, bruvver. I have a feeling the rest of Rafa's season will be a big improvement on the start of it. Can't be much worse, eh? ;)

Wouldn't that be a shocker if Nadal picked it up and won the WTF. That's the last feather missing from his cap. Stranger things have happened.

I would be actually shocked. He is still awful this year against fellow top 10 players, these smaller events he won are not convincing as far as I am concerned. He defeated in his 3 events he won only a top 20 player, Monfils in Stuttgart, who stated that he dislikes grass.

I wouldn't bet on much improvement indoors. The norm is he does next to nothing there...

I think Nadal will play better on the NA hard courts, but not indoors.

Comes Monday, JW Tsonga will drop out of the top 20, for the first time since 2010. This is due to the fact that Canadian Open points are coming off one week earlier.
Grigor also drops out of the top 16, it will take some big time scrambling for both to make it back into the top 16 before US Open.

Not surprising about Tsonga, I don't think he'll win Montreal again then Cilic"ll have the same dropping, can't imagine him winning USO 2015

If you consider Wawrinka against this background, folks will learn to appreciate. He withstood defending AO and MC and still is in top 4. So, he is surely not a flash in the pan.

Not a big admirer of the World indoor Tennis for Federer"...yeah it's nice to have but it's not the goal, the only thing that matters IMO is the other slams, ( Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open). I didn't include RG only because he has won it 9 times and even for Rafa , it can't be perceived now by him to have the allure of winning it again as the prior years.

If he wins tonight, Kei will get back to #4 ranking.

WTF is still important for Rafa and it will still PROPERLY remain indoors despite the whining of Uncle Homie. Rafa just blows indoors, face the facts. Also, the event is on a slow indoor hard court and has been since 2009. It's tailor made for Nole more than anyone else. Roger was naturally much stronger on the Shanghai courts before they moved the event.

Unlike DC or even Olympics, the WTF is a legitimate important event. Unlike DC, WTF is an individual event and so everybody is on their own and no supporting cast required. Unlike Olympics, where they consider various other factors such as limiting the number of entries per country etc, where the rules are twisted, the WTF is straightforward. Even if all the top 8 players come from Spain, only they will get the invite to WTF. WTF is a unique and important event as folks have to hit the ground flying, as there are no easy matches.

I can understand Nadal fans wanting to minimize the WTF since Nadal has never won it, but the WTF is the fifth slam and gaining in significance and importance every year. It's a bit amazing that Nadal has never won it. It will definitely be a black mark on his career if he finishes without a single win. almost every player with six+ slams has won the thing at least once. At least he has company with Wilander.

Federer: 6
Nadal: 0
Sampras: 4
Borg: 2
Djokovic: 4
Connors: 1
Lendl: 5
Agassi: 1
McEnroe: 3
Wilander: 0
Edberg: 1
Becker: 3

I do not find it "amazing" at all that Nadal has not won the WTF in his career. It was a bad timing for him, to play this event in the Fedovic era, when those two, Roger and Nole won 10 of them leaving not much room at all to anyone else.
The only time when Fedovic came up lame, 2009, Rafa came up even lamer than usual, suffering 3 defeats.
He is just simply not that as good indoors, he will always be a dark horse in that event.

I do. For a player who has 14 slams to never have won the WTF even once is pretty amazing, unbelievable and dismal.
