New career highs:

26. Dominic Thiem 21y
36. Borna Coric 18y
50. Teimuraz Gabashvili 30y
64. Sam Groth 27y
87. Lucas Pouille 21y
94. Ruben Bemelmans 27y
97. John Millman 27y
99. Marco Cecchinato (Italy) 22y

:clap

There are 2 types of players recording new career highs, the youngsters, which is to be expected, 22y and below and the veterans, a bunch of 27y and even Gabashvili finally cracking a milestones, the top 50. A newcomer in the top 100 this week is Italian Cecchinato.

alexander zverev lost presumably some challenger points from this week in2014. his rank has plummeted into the 100s. also he reached hamburg sf in2014 so a further drop might be happening soon.

borna coric could be a seed by usopen. dominic thiem is sneaking towards the top20.

.

Zverev dropped 180 points last week, for his Hamburg SF. That was disputed earlier last season.

I'm not too worried about Zverev - he looks like he can play and will shoot up the rankings quickly enough.

Interesting fact about ranking point computation for ATP that I observed for the first time and has never been mentioned by anybody before.

Since Roger clearly said that he is not playing in Miami well before the initial entry list is released (this is done six weeks ahead of the tourney), he was not part of the entry list. When that happens, he is allowed to substitute some other tourney in lieu of Miami towards ranking point calculation.
On the other hand if he had allowed his name to enter in the initial entry list and then did not show up, then Miami would count as 0 points (there is no penalty as Roger has unlimited exemption)
and points earned in some other tournament cannot count in place of Miami 0 points in ranking calculation.

Of course, this is not a rule just for Fed. Novak had said well in advance that he is not playing in Madrid and so he gets to substitute Madrid 0 points with some other tourney points (Monte Carlo in his case).

They were not using this scheme before and so this is new. However, ATP never bothered to issue a press release regarding this. But, it is not violation of their own rules. They had changed the rules at the beginning of 2015 I think.

So, neither Novak (despite missing Madrid) nor Fed (despite missing Miami) are having a 0 pointer included in the rankings breakdown of them.

p.s. Effectively this means once you qualify for one exemption, you can pick and choose 8 of the 9 ATP 1000 events to play in, without your choice affecting your ranking points (provided you tell the tourney that you are skipping six weeks before that you want to skip it).

Also, this would mean that if Fed plays in Vienna and gets 500 points, those 500 points can be used to replace his 90 points from MC (as MC is a non-mandatory masters event).

Here is the relevant passage.

"For every Grand Slam or mandatory ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament for which a player is not in the main draw, and was not (and, in the case of a Grand Slam, would not have been, had he and all other players entered) a main draw direct acceptance on the original acceptance list, and never became a main draw direct acceptance, the number of his results from all other eligible tournaments in the ranking period, that count for his ranking, is increased by one (1). Once a player is accepted in the main draw of one of these twelve (12) tournaments, as a direct acceptance, a qualifier, a special exempt or a lucky loser, or having accepted a wild card, his result in this tournament shall count for his ranking, whether or not he participates."

It is due to this that both Fed and Novak are able to count some other tournament in lieu of the
"mandatory" Miami and Madrid tourneys. The fact that they are not mandatory for people with exemptions are well known. What is new is their ability to substitute something else as long as they make sure not get on to the entry list at any point of time.

New career Highs:

24. Dominic Thiem 21y
27. Adrian Mannarino 26y
33. Borna Coric 18y
62. Sam Groth 27y
67. Aljaz Bedene 26y
85. Lucas Puille 21y
89. Ruben Bemelmans 27y
90. Nikoloz Basilashvili (Georgia) 23y
96. John Millman 26y
100. Radu Albot (Moldova) 25y

Again, the same pattern this week, some experienced gyus 26+ keep improving, while some of the younger guys are marching up as well.

2 new faces in the top 100 this week, Basilashvili from Georgia, following up on his surprising 3rd at Wimbledon, by winning a challenger and Albot from Moldova.

57. Aljaz Bedene 26y
64. Lucas Pouille 21y
79. Denis Kudla 22y
84. John Millman 26y
97. Marco Cechinatto 22y
99. Radu Albot 25y

Dominic Thiem is really establishing himself as the leader of those born 1993 and after, with his back to back titles. Can he pull a tri-peat this week in Austria?
Significant jump this week also by Pouille and Kudla.

Yes, he is inching forward. At this rate, I would not be surprised if he becomes #1 in nine more years. :snicker

He's 6th in the Race, even while having a lousy year. I think it likely he'll overhaul at least Federer and Berdych by the end of the season, but maybe one or two other players, as well... :popcorn
