maybe the guardians of the world rank charts (dressed like beefeaters at tower of London) come along and throw players out of the top 10.

With Tsonga's loss today, Rafa avoids the ignominy of being thrown out of top 10.

:laydownlaughing

You're obsessed with young Ralph.

The correct term is, he would fall out of the top ten. It's all the sweeter for us to count his steps upwards for the rest of the year. Remind me when he gets thrown back into the top five, will ya? ;)

Sorry, English is not my first language. :dodgy:

Well, on the positive side his ranking can only increase during the rest of the year. But, it will be more like a "dead bull bounce" not to be confused with real resurgence.

Nadal will be back in the Top 5 before the year is out.

Maybe. Not a guarantee. How many thought he would drop to 10????

^hard to believe that he won't though. He has nothing to defend. He's currently 8th in the race. Let's look at who's just behind him...

9 Milos Raonic CAN 1540
10 Gael Monfils FRA 1255
11 Gilles Simon FRA 1145
12 John Isner USA 1090
13 Kevin Anderson RSA 1035
14 G G Lopez ESP 1025
15 R Gasquet FRA 1005
16 J W Tsonga FRA 990
17 Grigor Dimitrov BUL 955

... I think we can all agree that barring time out, none of these guys are going to do enough to get past him. He stands a very good chance of moving up. Even Roger has to get his act together or he'll be the one in trouble :nono

I did not say he will drop further. He played a full season and he is ranked 8. That is what counts and not the fact he has nothing to defend.
Unless he improves, he will stay within the 5 to 8 range.

No no. I wasn't saying you did. I was just saying that I think he has top 8 locked, and every chance of climbing

If it were to come to that, I wouldn't even like Rafa to play at the WTF. At that point, it means that he has done so badly at the USO series that he has practically earned nothing. This is where he has played his best hard court tennis, and even in 2013 Djoko creamed him in the final of WTF. He would just ruin his own stats. My suggestion is to take a break like Agassi did. If possible, he will get hungry again and start winning, maybe bring some improvements to his game, and if not, well...

I have no doubt in my mind that Rafa would qualify for the WTf. I think his YE ranking will be somewhere between 5 and 8.

[split] Rankings

Live ranking has Wawrinka jumping 5 spots to #4! I hadn't even considered it so it's even more interesting to see how the world rankings shake out with Rafa ensconced at #10 for now! People think he has time, but I keep asking, "why should this summer and fall be any more different than most for Nadal?" :puzzled :nono - http://live-tennis.eu/

Exactly. Let's hope it's as good as 2013, or 2010, or 2008, or even near the level of play he had in 2011, and not like the ones he skipped injured, which were 2012, and 2014...

nice: Wimby will most likely mark the first time that Thiem gets seeded at a slam. hope he can capitalize on that.

Now this is a sight for sore eyes - 21 and under players in the top 100:

27. Kyrgios (20)
29. Thiem (21)
41. Coric (18)
46. Vesely (21)
69. Kokkinakis (19)
74. Chung (19)
83. Zverev (18)
97. Pouille (21)
99. Edmund (20)
(101. Coppejans (21))

Now probably not all of those guys will be stars, but it is nice to see an insurgence of youth into the rankings. Compare this to, say, 2012 when there were no teenagers in the top 250 and the only 20-year olds in the top 100 were Bernard Tomic and Ryan Harrison.

Also, Brits can be a bit intrigued by Kyle Edmund who is, I believe, the first young player in the top 100 since Andy Murray (but haven't fact checked that).

I love seeing that youth move up. Nice to see Tomic back on track. Kyrgios and Coric keep climbing, and Kokkinakis and Zverev might finally be in the top 100 to stay (and of course Chung).

I see Tomic, Sock, Thiem and Vesely as future perennial top 20 players. Maybe not the next Tsonga/Berdych crowd, but more like in the Gasquet/Isner/Simon/Almagro category - "tier 3" players.

From the beginning of Halle 2014, to the end of the 2014 season, Rafa won 370 ranking points.

He got 250 for Stuttgart.

See how handy this could all get for him? :popcorn

Had no idea Goffin was up to number 15. Good stuff, Marty McFly.
