FACTOID:

1. Everybody by now knows that it was more than 10 years ago when Rafa was ranked outside top 5.
What is interesting is that the last time, he was ranked outside top 5 (2nd May 2005), he was
ranked exactly the same as today viz., #7.

2. There were six players ahead of him in May 205 and six players ahead of him today. There
is only one person to common to these two sets of six players. Need I mention who is that?
The other 5 in 2005 were Hewitt, Henman, Roddick

This group was supposed to be the changing of the guard? Hewitt never duplicated his initial years at #1, Roddick was all serve, Safin a headcase but talented, Guidio who I missed winning FO, while Henman has just "been there" without doing too much! :cover  :dodgy: Those years are a blur in tennis with Hingis missing in action, Martina Navr. doing her thing in MxD with not too much coverage, while Federer was routinely winning 3 majors a year! Nadal was the only player in his path in Paris year after year! I can't tell you how amazing this has been for all of the "Big 3!" They have already shattered all the records I thought would last my lifetime; been totally obliterated and they're still going strong! Not sure these records will ever be touched with the mediocrity being bred in today's pros; it's just been embarrassing save Stan, Milos, Kei, and Andy of course! They had a little success, but it barely gets them into the HOF! :dodgy:

In fairness to Rafa, you can't expect him to skip so much tennis, as he did, and still be stuck in the top 4. He has nothing to defend after Wimbledon, and we equally shouldn't be surprised to see him rise through the rankings...

In this year tanking (points accumulated this year) he is 6, ahead of Roger actually who is 7. Fact is their results are not as consistent as they used to be.

I see that too. More surprised by Roger, to be honest. I'm not surprised that Rafa has started slowly...

Nick K is currently ranked 30. Even though he lost today promptly to Deliciano, he is likely to
remain in top 32 and get a seeding. So, he won't be a dangerous floater.

No 6 is still quite good, but we expect much more of him, especially since we're rounding up the clay season. Federer is not that surprising, second half of the season suits him more.

Now that Rafa won his opening match in Rome, he is officially guaranteed to be seeded in top 8 for RG independent of what other players do or do not do.:clap

I'm relieved and sad at the same time. Relieved that the above is true, and sad that as a Nadal fan, I'm "relieved" that he's among the top 8 seeds...

Wow, I've dreamed of this moment! You know it's bad when Rafa fans are so easily pacified by him being in the top 8! :p :clap :snicker

Rafa's a victim of his own success! When you attain Gawd-like status, there's only one way to go! Roger's been able to stave it off; with a little help from the mental midgets of the tour! IMO, this is Nole's time and I'm looking forward to him making even more history than his 2011 season! :dodgy:

Sorry folks, I jumped the gun. It is still only virtual.

There is a small chance that Rafa may still be out of top 8.

For that to happen, Rafa has to lose against Isner tomorrow, Stan has to win Rome outright and Ferrer has to reach SF or better.

OK. Finally it is now official. Rafa will get a top 8 seeding at RG. Sorry for the confusion.

OK, due to popular demand, I computed.

In order for Rafa to get back to top 4 in time for RG seeding, he needs to win Rome, and neither Berdych nor Kei should reach SF (or better).

Assuming Nole can stop Kei in quarters, only Federer can save Rafa by beating Berdych in quarters.
Now, all Nadalites should beg for mercy from the Mastero.

Berdych has lost before SF. Nishikori has lost before SF.

Now, Rafa is in control of his destiny. All that he needs to do is a small thing viz., win Rome and he gets #4 ranking and seeding in RG. I think it is only fair to ask him to win at least one European warm-up clay tourney to get a seeding of #4 in RG.

Also, Kei is now out of contention for #4. If Rafa does not win Rome, #4 ranking and seeding goes to Bird.

We are grateful for his mercy, and we hope that Rafa can thank him in person tomorrow, in the usual way... ;)
