Even Federer in his best days didn't rule like this; 4 major wins before May (AO & 3 Masters)! Looks like 2011 will only be a footnote in comparison if this plays out like it looks; Nole not at his best, but still finding a way to keep on winning! Sampras was never this dominant! I didn't think anyone would come close to what Federer could do in a single season, but Nole's threatening it! :popcorn :eyepop :p

That's not really true. Sure, Fed has never had a start like this, but he's certainly "ruled" in a similar manner for periods of equal time, even longer.

By my calculations, the very best seasons in the Open Era are (in chronological order):

Laver 1969: 4 Slams, 18 titles
Connors 1974: 3 Slams, 15 titles 93-4 (96%)
McEnroe 1984: 2 Slams, Masters Cup and WCT, 13 titles, 82-3 (96%)
Federer 2006: 3 Slams, WTF, 5 Masters, 12 titles, 92-5 record (95%)
Djokovic 2011: 3 Slams, 5 Masters, 10 titles, 70-6 (92%)

There are a few more in there worth considering: Guillermo Vilas' disputed 1977, Borg's 1980, Wilander's 3-Slam 1988, a couple of Sampras' years, Roger's 2004-05 and 2007, and Rafa's 2010 and 2013, etc. But those are the top 5, in my opinion, and the bar against which Novak is competing.

I know I qualified it! If you choose to ignore it; it's on you! I well know all about these greats seasons; I watched them all LIVE! With Vilas I have to put an asterisk behind his name because for the most part, he was still "owned" by Borg; playing lower level clay events to get ready for the big shows at The FO where Borg didn't play and Forest Hills, the last year of the USO at that location! :popcorn

But if Djoker win, he is nearing 14.000 points, if i am not wrong...his peak was at some 15.000 2 years ago ? Anyone remember ? What was record anyway ? One more stuff to brake.

The following is a quote from tennis.com article

"Although Djokovic has put more distance between himself and other players than anyone before him, his total may be less than Federer or Nadal at their peaks. Comparing point totals across years is complicated due to changes to points levels, as well as a different allocation of points for different rounds. At one point in 2006, Federer earned 8,370 points, when values were approximately half of those currently in place, though fewer points were accorded for reaching finals and other rounds."

Federer's 8370 is comparable to about 16,740 of today's points and so Fed still holds the
record. But, Novak has a reasonable shot at beating it, especially if he wins RG.

This makes sense, considering what an incredible year Roger had in 2006. He lost, what? Five or six matches the whole year, I think.

Rafa is defending 3600 points for the next three tourneys he's entering starting Madrid, things could get ugly. He has around 5400 points now.

Forgot that Kei has runner-up points to defend in Madrid; obviously none in Rome due to withdrawal last season! I still think Nadal's in trouble; many pts to defend at those Masters and a mere 110 pts ahead of Kei who's in the driver's seat w/ other players in the mix to take over #4! Thoughts? French Open Officials have announced they will not be seeding Rafa higher than his rank. This is really not a news as only when dog bites man, it is news.

But, I don't understand as to why they have to say that in 2013 he was injured and now he sucks. It is not their business to evaluate player's ability.

They don't need to compare the current situation to 2013 at all, as in 2013 also they never altered the seedings. Even though Rafa was ranked 5, he escaped that year as Andy dropped out
of RG (if I recall correctly). Rafa got seeded 4th not due to officials bumping him up, but due
to Andy dropping out.

This year no one above him is likely to drop out. So, if he cannot bring himself up, he
will be seeded 5th. There is a high chance that it will actually happen.

Why would Kieran celebrate? I thought Korean would celebrate? ;)

^ It's great to see Vesely at No. 35 -- just a few spots away from getting seeded at RG. :clap

New career highs this week:

45. Victor Estrella Burgos 34y
53. Borna Coric 18y
57. Diego Schwartzman 22y
68. Sam Groth 27y
81. Damir Dzumhur 22y
92. Lucas Pouille 21y
96. Ruben Bemelmans 27y

Interesting how a veteran leads this group, where 4 very young players are also marching upwards.
Also two later bloomers but more normal these days.

No discussion of Rafa dropping to #7 in the world? He has a lot of points to defend in Madrid and Rome, winning 1 and finalist in the other! I can't see it with this tough draws! :popcorn :eyepop :clap  :dodgy:

It was already discussed on another thread. And until it happens it is all only speculation.

Even more surprising to me was Raonic at No. 4.

How the heck...:dodgy:

It is because he sucked on clay last year. Others like Rafa and Kei had their points won
last year at Madrid taken off. I guess Milos did not do much in Madrid last year to be taken away.

He did not suck! He met Kei in R3 and he lost barely: 6-7, 6-7. Then of course Kei went right to the final.
And by the way, if Raonic gets into the 4th ranking position, it will be because he deserves it.
And Milos did not suck on clay last year overall.
He was in SF in Rome and QF in RG and MC. Otherwise he would not be ranked where he is.
And yeah, the plan is to have Milos in the top 4. This year is his turn:devil

Call me shocked...have you not noticed Raonic breathing in Kei's neck for months now?? It is just a matter of time...
