^ Not mad at Roger, he is old, and this is the norm. Since the end of 2010 he has won 1 slam, 1 YEC, and 6 MS events. For 4+ seasons for Roger that is a huge fall off compared to what he was doing before, even if those accomplishments in that time are enough for a Hall of Fame career. And if Rafa finally fails to win a slam this season, I'd expect a similar fall off for the rest of his career, hopefully worse.

The sorrow of many is a fool's consolation? :p remember that Rafa is just one year older than Muzz and Novak so three of them are in the same "package" and anyway every player is different. We all know how bad Rafa's confidence has went through after his comeback which is reasonable but it doesn't mean it's for ever, otherwise he would be the first one to take the decision to retired but he has said that he has still a lot of motivation and he knows that he has to improve his game (I would say his mind) and then he will be able to recovery his ranking and wins

Age has something to do with it but more telling is mileage and injuries. Rafa will turn 29 and that is pretty old for tennis and most players will have fallen off a little by then. For guys like Roger and Rafa (and likely will be the case for Nole within the next 2 years), it is a big fall off by then since they win so much and therefore play so many matches.

Believe me, I want Rafa to start wining, probably as much as you do, if not even more, but the guy has done nothing but make me angry during the last few months and if he plays like he did in Miami this year, I really am afraid what would happen to him in the semi final against a certain someone. At this point, I would rather bet my money on Fed to do the job. I probably never talked about this but regarding my favourite player, I am somewhat split between Roger and Rafa, and I know it's controversial, but it is what it is.

Nothing would happen to him in the semifinal as quite possibly he would not be in there.
He needs to get past Thiem, Isner and Little Beast to go there.

An early exit here, where he has 8 titles, I surely don't need to spell out what that would mean, someone should stop him somewhere and ask him: Who are you and what have you done to Rafito?
This would be a message to Djokovic, take it all man, take it and don't look back!

It would really let us know something about Novak if he can handle that pressure. Roger had to do it in 2009. It takes real stones to know that the door is open and to have the guts to walk thru it! It's not an easy thing to do. In that sort of scenario - if we're talking RG 2015 - it would be Novak's worst nightmare to have Roger on the other end of the court. Someone he has acknowledged he can't afford to have any doubts against

Interesting split of (relatively) young and old: no one between 23 and 25, and only one 26 year old.

Coric is truly the standout, at 18, but unfortunately he lost today.

Reading some articles about Messi who is probably the best soccer player of the world I see how much tough time the best athletes go though after an injury, of course it's not so easy to have a easy comeback. He says that he had a very tough time last year after his injury and took him time to get the confidence. That is exactly what is happening to Rafa but I hope it doesn't take so long as one year and this clay season brings his best again

:-/ Probably good to stick with Monte Carlo. There's still a lot of tennis before RG.

Forgot to officially congratulate Jack Sock on his new career high. :clap

He's now No. 2 in the US, with only Isner ahead of him:

It's too bad Smyczek hasn't been more successful since his impressive run at the AO.

For me, the interesting fact is that Bernard Tomic is back on track after a detour of almost 3 years. From here on, we should see what is his true potential.
Will he join the top 20 and how soon?

Herios, you are cursed like Tignor. The moment you talk up somebody they promptly lose in the first round.

That was not a first round match Tomic lost. It was his second (R32).

Big hit for Roger today. Of course he has virtually no chance at #1 this year, but losing the bulk of those 600 points softens his lead over Andy and Rafa.

The point structure has changed over the years so a record for most points is virtually...pointless. ;-)

Oh no, people translate the old points to new points and compare them to make a point. I think Rog still has the record on this one too.

Really meaningless. The points have only relative value to establish a ranking.

Rafa has passed Kei in rankings and is now #4 as per live rankings. With Kei defending Barcelona a
(whereas Rafa lost early in Barcelona) last year, Rafa is sure to retain his #4 rankings going into
Madrid. So, at least he cannot meet Novak in QF at Madrid. However, as Rafa is the defending
champion in Madrid, there is a chance that he may get relegated back to #5 by end of Madrid.
In that case, Rome will be a huge fight for Rafa to get the #4 seed back.

It will be interesting to see if Rafa can go into RG ranked #4. That would avoid a lot of discussion of what the tournament should do. He managed to scrape out a #4 ranking in 2013. To be clear, I'm not in favor of RG changing their policy for Nadal, but the tournament will have their panties in a twist if he manages to meet Djokovic in the QFs.
