There has been a real shift in the rankings and I'm pleasantly surprised by a stronger showing of the "also rans" outside the Big 4; sans Murray! The only real disappointment is in Simon and Isner; kinda gutless efforts with so much talent! With Rafa and Roger fallng off a little, I can see Nole really solidifying his #1 ranking and taking 2 majors next season! Rafa can't keep coming back and regaining the top spot as he's done before! I think the rest of the tour may have a "say" in those warmup 250's Nadal intends to resurrect his ranking next month and Feb.:

1 Novak Djokovic - 11360
2 Roger Federer - 9775
3 Rafael Nadal - 6835
4 Stan Wawrinka - 5370
5 Kei Nishikori - 5025
6 Andy Murray - 4675
7 Tomas Berdych - 4600
8 Milos Raonic - 4440
9 Marin Cilic - 4150
10 David Ferrer - 4045
11 Grigor Dimitrov - 3645
12 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - 2740
13 Ernests Gulbis - 2455
14 Feliciano Lopez - 2130

I am compiling a list with the top 100 players who have finished the year at their career best ranking.
Aside Novak Djokovic, who cannot improve on his best anymore, who do you think has more upside in the future?

1. Novak Djokovic 27y
5. Kei Nishikori 25y
14. Feliciano Lopez 33y
16. Kevin Anderson 28y
22. David Goffin 24y
25. Julien Benneteau 33y
30. Pablo Cuevas 28y
37. Steve Johnson 25y
42. Jack Sock 22y
44. Adrian Mannarino 26y
61. Diego Schwatzman 22y
66. Jiri Vesely 21y
79. Peter Gojowczyk 25y
80. Blaz Rola 24y

All of these players, except the 4 older ones, based on their age only, should have more upside left.
It is quite remarkable to see Lopez and Benneteau reaching highs. Even "late bloomer" for such age is an understatement.

Anderson is a peculiar case, a slowly moving up, every year, without doing anything spectacular. Cuevas on another hand, wins his first 2 titles at 28, that is another rare instance.
I think both have a "little room" to go up, but not too much. I doubt Anderson will be ever a top 10 player, nor Cuevas a top 20.

Gojowczyk hopefully. He's another player though who plays well against the top guys but crap against most of the rest of the field. Solve that puzzle and he'll jump a lot higher. Impressed by Goffin this year and hope he jumps a bit higher too. Definitely has the ability to anyway.

^ OTTOH, does this mean poor Stan Wawrinka won't ever be listed since he attained #3 ranking, but couldn't hold it! You would think it's all downhill from here on out for some of these players, but you can never know anymore!

Well Stan is most likely gonna lose a ton of points next month. I mean does anyone see him defending all 2000? Nah, didn't think so. I'd say 1/4s at best and even then he may lose before that so his ranking will tumble.

^ Well spotted and surely must be the one most likely to rise more, especially given how young he is.

Nick Kyrgios just missed out by attaining #51 IN Sept., but dropped to #52 in November! Awwww! :dodgy:

Thanks, Fiero!

Well, a list of players who finished the year at their best year end ranking (instead of their
best career ranking) would be more appropriate if one is trying to figure out the future of
up and coming players.

Well I didn't look, but Stan should have made the list of players who attained #3 at least! :puzzled :p

Why is Nick Kyrgios not on the list?

My criteria of selection was players "at their career best" not including those just shy of their career best like:
Wawrinka, Bautista Agut, Kyrgios for example. By the way, nobody observed so far, but I am making the correction right away, that I have a big name missed, Kei Nishikori...

At least, he managed something what nobody would have ever predicted, to replace out of top 4 Andy Murray for a full year.

Gulbis begins 2015 at #13. Does he climb further up the ladder year or take a tumble??

I really hope he does continue his climb, 2014 would surely have confirmed to him that hard work can pay off. The guy has serious talent, despite the agricultural forehand

Well the top 10 didn't change much if at all; but interesting to see Nick Kyrgios jump to #50!

Yes, and Hewitt dropped 34 spots :exclamation:
Initially I was thinking why do we have new rankings coming out when he had no events since last year, but when I looked closely, there is a change, because last years opening events in Doha, Chennai and Brisbane came off already, because those events ended earlier last year.
So Rafa, Stan and Lleyton all lost their 250 points today, but they will be able to recapture them (or some of them) in a week.

Hope he continues to climb but his shoulder caused him a fair bit of hassle late last year so it depends how well it's healed up.
