^ Well though Roger hasn't won much this year, he's reached a lot of finals so there's where he grabbed a load of points. It's even worse with the WTA with all the slamless number 1s in the last decade.

Also, since 2013 was a terrible year for Roger, he had plenty of scope for huge gains in points this year and hence why he's climbed a lot despite not winning most of those finals.

Well, Berdych made it to WTF last year without winning a single title, not even a mickey mouse ATP 250. Although titles are more visible, the ranking system rewards going deep as well.

Roger will be back up to #2 on Monday.

True.

As of today, he has 65 points lead over Rafa in rankings. It would be nice if he could
raise the lead to at least 300 in Shanghai. This is because he is defending 300 points
in Basel whereas Rafa is defending 0 points in Basel.

If Roger can build a lead of 300 or more, whoever does better than the other
will be #2 in Bercy.

If Roger wins Shanghai, Roger will be #2 in Bercy even if Rafa wins Basel.
Anything short of winning Shanghai would not give that kind of guarantee.

Being #2 in Bercy is important, as it would help to avoid facing Novak until finals.

More importantly, being number 2 is a big advantage in the AO.

Yes, to achieve that being #2 in Bercy and WTF would help. Being #2 at AO is the
primary goal.

It does not matter who is #2 and who is #3 in Basel as Novak is not playing there
and Roger and Rafa are the top two seeds anyway.

Roger is #2 in the rankings and has a lead of 975 over Rafa in the rankings. Roger is
defending 300 points (finalist last year) while Rafa is defindeing 0 points (did not play last year)
in Basel. Even if Roger exits in the first round and Rafa wins Basel, the maximum that
Rafa can gain is 800. So, Roger will continue to be #2 (and will be seeded as such)
in the Bercy ATP 1000 event independent of what happens in Basel. So, Roger cannot
face Novak before the finals at Bercy.

^maybe the best point in space-time for Federer to face Nadal is at 2014 Bercy, followed by the ATP finals.

From remote, his chances of achieving YE#1 are now fair. I think it will all goes down to how Federer and Djokovic do against each other at the YEC.

But Federer might have another window of opportunity to regain #1 after Miami next year, or after RG.

I agree with you that facing Nadal in Basel/Bercy/WTF would most probably help Fed in
notching a few wins against Nadal. However, in Basel they can only meet in finals and
I don't think Nadal will reach finals in Basel considering the strength of the field and his
physical condition.

I am more interested in Fed achieving YE #1 this year as opposed to he getting to
#1 at some point next year.

Fed has said in his post match interview that while he is committed to play
in Basel, he may decide to skip Bercy. He said he will make the decision only after the
Basel tourney is over.

It looks like YE #2 is not in danger even if he decides to skip Bercy, considering
that Fed has a lead of 1275 over Rafa and indoor courts are not the best surface for
Rafa and that he has health and fitness issues.

It seems to me that if Novak is forced to miss Bercy due to fatherhood, Fed should
play Bercy as there is a good chance of getting to YE #1. On the other hand if Novak
actually plays Bercy, it may be wise for Fed to give up on #1 and focus on picking up
titles at WTF and DC.

See excerpts from Fed's interview about YE #1.

"I'm not even going to change my schedule because of it," Federer reflected on the possibility of regaining the number one spot.

"I haven't thought about it, to be quite honest. I mean, it's in Novak's racquet. He dictates.

"But nevertheless, I'm still going to be playing and hopefully playing well again."

I think when he'll actually do the math he'll think different. Put, say, 500 points in his bag for Basel and DC combined (which is nothing absurd, and those are points Djokovic cannot respond to), and the difference between them goes down to 490. This makes a race to the flag between the two at Bercy and YEC (as opposed to being "in Novak's racquet").

Depending on how Basel goes he may well alter his thinking like a certain Andy Murray has. Cough, sorry, Andy hasn't altered his schedule at all! :p

Murray said: “My schedule was going to be dictated more how I felt and what I wanted from the end of the year rather than just trying to play to get into the Tour Finals, because I don’t think that’s necessarily the right way to go about it." :snigger

Troiki is currently ranked 127.

He is in the qualifying of Vienna this week. He has already won two matches in qualifying
there and will be playing the final round of qualifying there on Monday.

In particular, Murray could play a qualifier in his first match there and that
qualifier could be Troiki (the qualifiers are not yet placed in the draw and also
that qualifier has to beat Popsicle before facing Murray).
