^ I was just coming here to write the same! Good for him. Made up for last week, a bit. (Let me also add, he's one I'm glad who has cut his hair. On him, it's better short. Probably as he's soooo pretty. :) )

I was ready for him to choke, but he held up; even with that idiot umpire penalizing him out of the blue for a time violation! It just made no sense to call it in such a great match! They need to call Rafa more; heaven knows they let him get away with absolute "murder" out there! :puzzled :nono :s

^ Rafa is called for time violations more than any other player in the ATP. How is that letting him get away with murder?

He isn't "called" on it enough! That's what I really mean! He's the reason these matches go so long and other players are following his lead; esp. Nole! By 2011, he decided to go after Rafa in every way he has over the years and it paid off with 7 straight wins; 3 in majors! He truly had Nadal's number there for a while! Of course excuses abound which is why I can't stomach even listening to the guy! He says "don't mention my knee," in press conferences, but no one did! He's full of himself and will never get full credit from me with his lousy court demeanor and antics! :nono

Surely Tommy Haas should apply for protected ranking now. Sincerely hope he does but I can't recall him ever doing so which is strange given how long he's been out at times, missing entire seasons. At least coming back to his current ranking at 37 would be a help, otherwise he'll really have a hard time.

Besides Pascal Maria no other umpire has the balls to dock Nadal and Djokovic a first serve though, only warnings. Warnings aren't worth a toss unless they result in a loss of first serve or a penalty point. Del Potro is extremely slow as well, even towelling off after aces which is beyond ridiculous. Raonic can be quite slow too between points which given the bombs he serves is not really on.

Protect what? He's usually gone for long, it's not worth it! He really should just give it up; sorry! It can only get worse in his advanced age and condition! Minor issues turn into major ones! :nono

Last shoulder surgery was in 2007 I believe and it wasn't that bad since apart from this year. I believe him when he says he still feels he has a lot of good tennis left in him. Shoulder surgery has a good success rate these days. Imo he just overplayed and didn't allow himself adequate rest at his age. He played a ridiculous amount of tournaments last year in a bid to finally reach the WTF and even if he had made it he likely would've been wrecked there from playing too many matches all season. Overplaying last year is definitely what caused this relapse. Hope he knows this and doesn't repeat it if/when he comes back and he says he will. Regarding older players who aren't injured, Stepanek is just a year younger and is still playing some very high quality tennis and zero hint of retirement so I still think Haas will return as he says he plans to.

Tell me about it! I remember a match from maybe 32 years ago, Lendl vs Jose Luis Clerc! They were starting that trend of taking their time, even toweling off after an ace! It's only gotten worse it seems, even with new rules to supposedly speed up play! Umps are just too selective in their enforcement! Add on all the groaning and shrieking going on, tennis is fast becoming unwatchable; and unlistenable! lol! They keep promising to do something about it, but watching juniors, they are being allowed to do the same thing! So much for "grandfathering" the legislation into affect! They're all full of crap! Watching King and Evert the other day in '73 final, not a sound came out of them! These people need to be smacked who are playing today! They are purposely trying to distract and aggravate; no doubt about it! Maria Sharapova and Serena should be sanctioned at the top of the list!

He can only apply for it, after he was out for a certain time, I think something like six months. Protected ranking then means he can enter a some tournaments, 8 if I remember correctly, with the ranking he had before the injury. In Haas' case it would probably be his ranking after the French Open. Protected ranking isn't relevant for seedings, so he won't be seeded when he needs to use his PR to get into a main draw.

But with the protected ranking and some wild cards he would probably get if he asks for them, he should be able to enter every event he wants until maybe the US Open 2015, if he really attempts another comeback.

Please keep posts in this thread about rankings, and post messages about unrelated topics in other threads. We've worked hard to keep this thread about one topic. Thanks! :)

Ah ok, presumed since he knows he's out till 2015 he could apply now but he has to wait till he's out the required number of months so. Weird though that he never used it before. Hope he recovers well.

I'm not sure if he was out long enough to get a protected ranking in 2008 or used one before, but Haas definitely used a protected ranking for the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open 2011 and I think also for the Australian Open 2012 and probably some smaller tournaments in 2011. During the clay season he was still out of the Top 100 and had to play qualifications in Madrid and the French Open but then he won Halle, reached the final in Hamburg and Washington and the quarter final in Toronto so after that results his ranking was high enough to get into any main draw again.

Without this successful run at that time he might have retired already then.

Thought I would bump this as Murray is going fall pretty hard and dimitrov, raonic, and kyrgios will get a boost. Any of our number crunches have hard data?
