New career high this week for the following:

58. T. Gabashvilli 28y
62. K. De Schepper 26y
69. S. Johnson 24y
76. D. Lajovic 23y

Steve Johnson becomes the 3rd ranked USA player, as he passed this week Querrey, Young and Sock at once, by winnlng a challenger in Guadeloupe.

I just can't remember a period where the US was so lost when it came to tennis! I think it was in the mid 90's, maybe '96 when Agassi was missing in action, playing qualifiers, and probably in a stupor! We had only Sampras at #1 and of all players at #2, Michael Chang! I didn't think it could get any worse when Roddick was our standard bearer and barely holding onto a top 10 ranking! What in the world is going on? Querry, Isner, Sock, Young, and Harrison need to step it up; big time! Who are these other clowns? We used to have a top rung of players, a 2nd tier, then the D' listers that could win in smaller countries! OMG, can it getting any worse?

I would not put John Isner into the same category as the other US players currently active on the tour, because he is playing close to his capabilities. He is ranked now 9, as high as he has ever been and he made a few appearances in the final week end in a few masters, beside many small events titles.
The rest of the bunch, Querrey included who once was in the top 20 are quite disappointing.
But probably the majority of them are just not as talented.
Did you call Steve Johnson a clown? I would hold on to that thought, because he just turned pro 2 years ago after he has attended college and he is already better ranked than many of the otyher players who are banging the ball on tour for years.

^Good point, herios, about Johnson. I haven't seen him play much, but Isner also finished college before he turned pro, and so was also a "late bloomer," as it were.

With the sole exception of Sock, who's still young and has some time to mature, the others have already stepped it up to their capacity. Querrey and Young have no potential futures worth mentioning. I briefly had hope Harrison would do something, but I've given up on him, too. US tennis is, indeed, in a shambles, with nothing significant on the horizon.

Moxie, Johnson just entered the top 100 2 weeks ago. Even before he did that, he recorded wins over Tommy Haas, Kevin Anderson and Feliciano Lopez.
Therefore, I would not be so quick writing him off, before proven otherwise.
John Isner pretty much started the full time tour also late after college, and look at him now, he is the lone US player who has a decent ranking. Behind him is a big gap now, waiting for someone to fill it up.
Who knows, perhaps Johnson might be the one.

I hate to say it, but I don't believe there is anyone in the "wings" for U.S. tennis :nono

New career hihgs this week, April 21:

9. Milos Raonic 23y
55. Teymuraz Gabashvili 28y
58. Pablo Carreno Busta 22y
67. Steve Johnson 24y
72. Aleksandr Nedovyesov 27y

This might look only as a small step for Milos, but it could bring him new opportunities to establish himself as a true solid top 10 player.
He achieved it on the back of 3 consecutive QF appearance in masters and because JMDP is missing in action, he will get a top 8 seeding from here on in the big events.
I hope he will keep consolidating his position achieving good results.

Nishikori's career high is #11, reached last June.

Exactly. Funny that he was ranked higher before, when he was not playing this well and so consistent.
If he stays injury free, I think he can push into the top 10 in the near future, next couple of months.

On a sadder note, Janko Tipsarevic fell out of the top 100 this week - he had a 7 year, 8 month continuous run in the Top 100, with about a year and a half of that in the top 10.

Good heavens…that's sort of surprising. I haven't been following him. Anyone have an insight?

He was injured and out of action for quite a while, at least since DC finals of last year.
Surprising that he did not got for PR.

PR for what? He has not played at all this year and still not playing.

PR for what? He has not played at all this year and still not playing.

PR (Protected Ranking) so that he can resume at his previous ranking level, if and
when he rejoins the tour. If he had applied for PR and got it, you would not see his
ranking going down. It will be static since the point of time it is approved and until
he rejoins the tour.
