...don't remember what Birdie did in Italia last year and how many points he has to defend

Tomas made the SF in Rome, beating Novak, but then lost to Rafa.

Am I correct that Rafa went from a 4,000 point lead after Australia down to 1920 points ahead after today? My math with all the variables involved is shaky.

edit: As of Monday, 31 March 2014, Novak is behind Rafa by 1920 points. He has to defend Monte Carlo. Rafa, Madrid and Rome.

^ There, or thereabouts. And Novak has some places to gain on clay, with Rafa nearly everything to defend.

Rafa will be the hunter in Monte Carlo. I your guy will be fired up to stop Novak there.

Yes. I would have said that Novak wouldn't care so much about repeating, since the scalp didn't give him the advantage in RG last year, but I'm sure Nole will want to keep the streak going, and keep building momentum. Rafa will know he needs to take back the monegasque castle this year.

If you go to the ATP's rankings page, you can select which week you want to see. It's all archived. Select the week after the AO, and you'll see the point spread.

This week career high:

15. Grigor Dimitrov 22y
38. Joao Sousa 24y
43. Federico DelBonis 23y
44. Roberrto Bautista Agut 25y
63. Kenny De Schepper 26y
67. Jiri Vesely 20y
76. Aleksander Nedovyesov 27y
78 Dusan Lajovic 23y
79. Dominic Thiem 20y
93. Jean Lenard Struff 23y

Struff is a new face in the top 100. With Tipsy's injury and Troicki' s suspension, suddenly Lajovic becomes number 2 in Serbia.
Curious about how these players will do on clay, if they will continue improving.

Thanks Herios! Grigor is now fifteenth, which a steady, incremental move, despite his disappointing showing at the last two events. Hopefully he'll show even more during the rest of the year...

Although Grigor moved up this week into the top 15, he did not live up to his ranking in Miami being upset by a lower ranked player.
His ascendance was facilitated by Tommy Haas not being able to defend his points and thus dropping out of the top 15.
Grigor is still playing in the range of the top 15-25, there will be some time until he plays like a true top 10 player, but I am also optimistic about that it will happen sooner rather than later.
Watch out for Raonic though, he had 2 consecutive QF appearances in masters therefore he managed to get in the top 10, jumping over the French duo Jo&Richie.

The watch is on, but nothing major likely to change until after the French Open just like a 2 or 3 years ago! Would be more a certainty if not for Nole's upset at AO; his own personal major! He's still ahead of the game though taking IW and Miami recently! I think the AO cup s/b named after him! (if you checked out my post on the subject of multiple major trophy winners)

^ Fiero, it seems since you gave me that condescending little pat on the head last summer, that you've learned how the rankings points work, and can work in your favor. ;)

I'd love to tell you to "dream on," too, but, unfortunately, I know all too well how the rankings points work.

(Just ribbing you…but that one did sting a bit.) :hug

Rafa has to defend his clay season, and possibly regain the title at MC, to stay ahead. He may also deem it wise not to play Barcelona this year, which would drop him by 500, though I wouldn't be against that. The race is surely on, and if Rafa keeps his ranking through the USO, he'll probably do it by his fingernails. (And, of course, his tennis.) :)

I'm glad you are here because I don't think many people care if Rafa defends his points or not!
With the way the point system is maybe a player shouldn't even want to have a really great year because the chances are great they won't be able to defend the points the next year

He's won it four times. Same as Dre and Fed. Maybe it should be called the Djofedre Trophy? Or, since Emerson has first dibs, the Emdrefedjok Cup?

I think Arnfinnur Emdrefedjok is the #2 player in Iceland, so you may need to work with this a bit more.

Cheers

I just realized, when checking F3's stats that I did a sloppy job and forgot Fabio from this list, he also achieved a new career high this week

Sorry Haychew:blush:

They weren't as young as Nole at the time of their 4th title and they never won 3 in a row! There's a big difference in expectations and possibility of future titles! :clap

Not a fan of that idea at all. Novak already has his name on the trophy.
