^^you need to pay attention a bit more..del potro won 4 atp500 tourneys in 2013, thats 2'000 rank points for a start..

then 2 masters finals so that's 1'200 pts for another start. so he deserves to be 4th. otherwise he wouldn't be there.

Well you're a big Murray fan and obviously Murray has slipped due to his surgery and downtime but tell me if you honestly think Del Potro has done anything of much note besides his Wimbledon semi and his great performance in Shanghai? Besides that you'd nearly have to go back to 2009 since he's done anything much. So the wonderful players behind him would be Murray, obviously, and most of the others behind him have performed much better all year than he has. They just underperformed at the AO which is where all the shifting in the rankings occurred. I already said it's not his fault he's ranked number 4, simply that I don't think he's playing consistently well enough to justify that ranking.

I'm no fan of Ferrer but he has performed a whole lot better than Del Potro all last year and is now ranked behind him because of points lost just recently but overall you'd have to say Ferrer seemed a more deserving number four than Del Potro based on his year.

Anyway, the rankings are gonna change up a lot the next few months so he won't be there long. He's already world number 5 in the live rankings and Ferret has hopped back over him from the branch he was sitting on.

We will see. Murray got today upset also by Cilic so he had an opportunity to make up some ground, but he failed to do so. We do not know how it will pan out in the end, as I mentioned, lots could change.

If Berdych wins tomorrow, the Big 4 would settle in the top 2 and bottom 2 of the
top 8 slots in rankings.

We can now call the changes in the top 10, Ferrer goes back into the top 4, as Delpo slips out, also Tomas Berdych passes Andy Murray:

4. David Ferrer 5440
5. Juan Martin DelPotro 4960
6. Tomas Berdych 4950
7. Andy Murray 4795

So far, 5 of the top 10 have won titles in 2014. (Rafa, Stan, JMDP, Ferru and Bird).
Last year saw the unusual situation of a top 10 player never winning a title in the
whole year (Bird). Will we see a repeat of it this year (may be Gasquet or Tsonga)?

At least one of them could pick a title next week, Richie and JWT are the top 2 seeds in Marseille

Rafa has EXACTLY 4000 points lead over Novak now. That looks like a
plenty of margin to help him with the ups and down of the rest of
the year and eventually finish #1. Also, anyone other than Novak is not
even in the radar as they all have very low points in comparison.

No, it's too soon to say that. How many points lead did Nole have on Rafa this time last year?

True. Besides Rafa has only defending titles left for the year (except for Wimbledon
and 1 or 2 minor tournaments). and so there is more chance of him losing points than
gaining points.

But, no one other than Novak or Rafa have much chance this year again.
No. 3's points at this time are about half of No. 2's points.

It's true it's unlikely to be anyone other than Rafa or Novak. That would be some mighty tumbling. There's no reason to think that Rafa won't have another great clay season, even if a few points fall off. I think he plans to play Miami, so will make some up there, if he doesn't defend at IW. (Djokovic can pick up a few in IW and Miami.) I'm hoping that Nadal has a quality Wimbledon, for the more obvious reasons, but it would also pick up points. If he stays healthy and has SF, F finishes in everything else, he might just keep his #1 ranking all year. That's my plan for him, which includes defending RG and the USO. :)

Gulbis hits career high #18 this week. Also new career high is a guy whose name I don't even recognize, Alexander Nedovyesov (27, Kazakhstan,) #81. Played in Montpellier, mostly seems to play minor tournaments and challengers. Is that surprising that he's snuck into the top 100?

I think we will see him play Fed/Stan in the DC QF very soon.

Why am I being aggressive or warlike or extreme? I do know what jingoistic means.

Nedovyesov progressed into the top 100 late last year based on his results on the challenger tour, 3 titles and one final. He used to play for Ukraine, being born there.
After last season he seems to have been bought by the Federation from Kazakhstan, joining the other imported players, Golubev and Kukushkin.

Other players with new career high this week, beside Gulbis and Nedovyesov:

44. J Sousa 24y
65. B. Khlan 23y
89. D. Lajovic 23y
