When did Fritz become 4th in the ranking? I know he plays a lot and was in USO final. But still, it's Fritz. To me it seems like a good quarter to land in the AO draw.

edit: I see he ended the year as a 4th player. Obviously, I don't remember it. :)

Agreed! This is a joke IMO! Fritz in the top 5 is so ridiculous IMO! It shows how weak the tour has become w/o the Big 3! It's all about Sincaraz, then the rest! Don't get me wrong, the level of tennis has risen exponentially, but the speed of the game & the players breaking down will make it hard to stay consistent; even at the top of the rankings! We had several retirements over the wkend w/ players unable to continue even if winning a match! That will become a theme of the game IMO! The play is more about power than skill & it's costing all concerned! :angry-face::astonished-face::yawningface::anxious-face-with-sweat:

Fonseca just cracked the top 100 (#97) and that makes him the youngest person to do so since Carlitos.
This is true, I think. Arthur Fils was also 18 when he reached the top 100, but he was older - less than a month shy of 19.

When I was tracking "benchmarks of greatness," the first was top 100 before 19th birthday. So Joao has that one crossed off the list!

And he could have crossed that even earlier. Untill the second half of 2024 Fonseca and his family were still considering playing college tennis in USA. He kept a very light schedule in the first semester, and even in the second it wasn't that packed.

Not to mention that he's already much better than his current ranking. Tennis Abstract his him at #27 on current Elo, between Fils and Jordan Thompson, which I think is a much closer estimate to his current level - and that might go up substantially over the course of the year.

As an American growing up with it, i have to remind myself how unique our intercollegiate sports system is , so many players have honed their skills ( tennis, swimming, track & field, diving, baseball, etc) through this particular sport mill.

If Fonseca, Mensik, and Tien can reach their full potential, men's tennis is going to be really exciting in a few years. Alcaraz and Sinner will have real competition on their hands.

And how about CRUZ HEWITT. I know, I know...he's 16 and ranked something like 1000. But...he's got family pedigree.

I watched Hewitt at the AO just recently he received a WC into qualies, he also played in the juniors at the AO, he plays a different game to his dad, very offensive, also much taller, he has solid foundations, yes the family pedigree, too early to say.

Graf is one of my all time fav players, their son is going to make his career in baseball, sad to say tennis missed out.

Yeah, she's my choice for female GOAT, edging out Martina and Serena, if only just barely. But that's another convo for a different board...
