Theim would also have been the #2 instead of #3

Federer did not play due to his injuries, COVID or not. Someone who didn’t

As to Theim, the caveat is Rafa’s USO points would have slid off due to COVID reasons for not playing that Major.

This record is going in the shadow of a slam race, but I feel like Novak will slam dunk this record and surpass Roger by far. Youngsters are playing better and better every year, but there is couple of them, not one who is above others, while Novak is one and most consistent from January to November. Some of these young guys just disappear for a couple of months, you can't be no.1 playing like that.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Federer's record would be broken for time at number one. It is an astounding accomplishment and demonstrates Novak is consistently superior month in and month out, year in and year out. Kudos to the Serbian Slayer!

And Djokovic did it years earlier in his career where Federer picked up a few weeks @ #1 while Novak was on hiatus back in 2017! If not for that and the pandemic, this record would have fallen last year; maybe as early as Oct.!

Haha here we go again. On hiatus? The old man was still old in 2017 and Djokovic is lucky there's a near 6 year age gap. Federer hasn't played for a year and he missed half of 2016. Guess who had a longer hiatus, plus the competition was much, much tougher when Federer amassed the bulk of his weeks at number 1. Tons of players have retired now that would've made those weeks much harder to pick up now but they were playing when Federer built his weeks at number but either way, well done Djokovic.

I have talked a lot about how the freeze and the 2 year ranking actually hurt Djokovic in terms of rankings and weeks at no 1

Djokovic now might get a lucky break from the rule change. Had the ranking rules not changed, Medvedev would have been world no 1 with a win in Australia . The closest someone is to being no 1 apart from the big 4. He lost 22 weeks potentially but might gain at least 6 and maybe more

I believe it is Federer with 237 consecutive weeks at number one--now THAT is likely one which won't be broken for awhile.

Pete is almost forgotten with multiple goats roaming around nowadays. But, he finished as ATP #1 for six years in a row. That record still stands.
Not even Fedalovic could touch it. I think in a similar way, this record of Roger will stand the test of time.

The ATP has announced a package of measures to support players and tournaments under continued COVID-19 conditions.

FEDEX ATP RANKINGS UPDATE
The ATP has extended the ‘Best Of’ logic for the FedEx ATP Rankings through the week of 9 August 2021 (inclusive of Toronto). Results from all events between 4 March – 5 August 2019, which were not played in 2020, will be extended a further 52 weeks and weighted at 50%. This reduction will occur at the originally designated drop date for each event and the ‘Best Of’ logic will only count the better of a player’s two scores from the same tour-level event.

For example, a player will be able to count either 50% of his 2019 Madrid result, or 100% of his 2021 Madrid result, whichever is greater, for the next 52 weeks.

Results from rescheduled 2020 events (Kitzbühel, Hamburg, Rome & Roland Garros) will also be included for an additional 52 weeks at 50% from their originally scheduled drop date and be compared against the 2021 event in a ‘Best Of’ logic. The 2019 edition of these four events will drop from the rankings as per their currently scheduled drop date.

Aside from blaming China for the virus, which seems unnecessary here, you're right: the ATP had to come up with a formula, and they can't go a la carte deciding who gets to keep points and who doesn't. Plus, there is no way of knowing if COVID played into his decision not to travel to Miami. He has 4 children, a wife and elderly parents. To come to the US for one tournament might not be that appealing. I actually wonder if Rafa will bow out, too. (Giving Medvedev another and better shot at #2, btw, Front.) Besides who MORE than Roger deserves to keep his points? He has nearly 25 (?) years of excellent service to the game. The rules give other accommodations for years of service and matches played.

Federer is part of the player's council and they consulted with the ATP with the making of the rules

I just think this system is rewarding inactive players and not the active players who are actually risking it out
