Why would any of them? Why would Novak get to keep his points from Paris indoors last year, when he's freely chosen not to play there? Why should Roger keep his points when we knew pre-Covid that he was skipping everything until after Wimbledon? He hadn't entered events but kept the points for them? It makes no sense.

This season is a write-off as far as rankings are concerned. They're a loose approximation, at best. Very loose. Not the ATP's fault, by the way, I'm not criticizing them, they didn't cause the virus, but a reasonable view of it might say that no matter how they tried to do it, they got it wrong...

Fed decision was just bad! No way should he be allowed to stay in the top 10 when he already knew he was shutting it down for the season! I wouldn't think the YEC should or would hold points over due to it being an invitational or something that's earned a birth! By then we will be "well within" the new normal and people will have to start showing up to keep those points and their rankings! :astonished-face:

Well the more interesting thing is to see if Medvedev can wake up for the last couple of HC tournaments. If he or Tsitsipas can do well, at say, Vienna and Paris they have a chance at overtaking Federer at #4. The problem with Tsitsipas is he has ATP champ YE points to defend (1300 points) so if he falters at the end he could lose over 1000 points in London. Again, Meds chances look better if he just WAKES UP.

Well maybe Rafa will hold onto one or 2 records; obscure records before Novak takes over the major ones in the next couple years or 3! :partying-face:
"Obscure" records like all of his clay ones? Plus, last I looked, 20 and counting is still better than 17. :dance2:

Just one more win and Novak’s 6th YE No1 is secure.
And many weeks at No 1 also raising.

Not true Mathematically

Nadal can still theoretically take a wildcard into Sofia and add 250 points. It will be clinched if Nadal does not play Sofia. Only a title here will seal it irrespective of what Nadal does

Djokovic actually lost 22 deserved weeks at no 1 because of these new rules. If the ranking had been the same as it always was, then the YE#1 would have been clinched when he won Rome

Well, everybody lost out this year, that’s the point. That’s what makes this season an exception that we can’t simply apply norms to...

Haha ok.
What’s more likely, workmen to play Sofia or Novak taking more than two wins in Vienna?

I see that Tsitsipas and Medvedev are only 35 points apart, at 5 & 6, respectively. Both are still in the tournament at Vienna. If Medvedev does better, he'll pass Stefanos, but neither can yet pass Roger.

Everybody except a certain someone who is in the Top 5 despite confirming that he would not play anything till after Roland Garros

I was going to post on Monday that the only one reaching a new career high was Lorenzo Sonego (42,) but I figured no one cared. On the live rankings, he is now at 32, and if he wins tomorrow, he goes to #26. Big week for the Italian, either way.

Say what you want (within reason of course). You'll restrict yourself a great deal too much if you only say what you think others want to hear. I don't really like people being smarmy. I'd rather hear what someone really thinks even if I don't like what they say. I'd rather hear the truth though the truth hurts sometimes. At least you know where you stand & others do too. It also gives other people the right to say what they want too. Some people will be interested in what you say. Others won't.

It definitely is. Good for him.

Indeed. I might have looked smarter if I'd called him out on Monday as one on the rise. ;)

Definitely.

In order to look smart you don't have to make predictions like Nostradamus.
You don't have to use posh language & write in rhyme just to charm us.
You don't always have to be the 1st person to know something.
You don't have to always be right. You can do your own thing.
You don't have to write medieval French, Italian, Latin & Greek.
There are all different ways to act like a geek.

Lol. ;0)

We all know you're a very busy person too.

Why did Novak "deserve" those 22 weeks when no one was playing? That would be 22 free weeks. Doesn't make sense. The clock stopped for everyone.

It's all a crock! Why does Federer get to keep points when he knowingly was shutting it down before the pandemic? Someone joked about him actually taking over #1 in his hospital bed if he worked it right! He'll remain in the top 4, 10, & 20 officially possibly keeping some of his consecutive streaks alive! It's all a joke IMO! I'm just glad we got something! It didn't bother me in the least Nole stole a Cincy title played in Flushing gaining him a Double Golden Masters! :partying-face:

I’m looking at the list of players who have qualified for London:

1. Djokovic
2. Nadal
3. Thiem
4. Tsitsipas
5. Medvedev
6. Zverev
7. Rublev

Number 8 is still up for grabs, but there’s no one else whose name ends in “ev” to fill out the bottom half. Schwartzman, Berrettini, Monfils, and Shapovalov are next.

Isn’t there more than one continent playing Tennis these days?

Schwartzman and Shapavolov are our North/South American hope. Vamos Diego! C’mmon Dennis!

Thank goodness for the Canadian boys or North America would never be represented internationally in top events! Our best still don't have the weapons to compete abroad! The ladies are coming along nicely, but there are probably a few knuckleheads pining for the days of Roddick; "not me!"

To be correct: Russia is mostly Asian.
So we can say two continents.
