Question for all those who are strong in mathematical ranking scenarios! Federer is 1,000 points, give or take, behind Nadal. How many points does Rafa get for being quarterfinalist? If Roger wins, I know he adds 2000 points. How far will Roger be behind Rafa (assuming he wins in this scenario) after the points for winning and being finalist last year come off in a few days?

Rafa has 9760 points and if Roger wins, he'll have 9605. El Dude made a thread that went through the math of Roger getting to #1 since Rafa went out early, with all the math involved.

The big problem for Roger is, like Nole back in 2015-16, he has tons of points to defend! That makes it hard to stay up there since one fabulous year has to be followed by another! Nole won 2 majors and was in the final of another in 2016, but still dropped to #2 when Murray won 1 major, and accumulated tons of points from those 500's! :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:

This was discussed in another thread - one I started about the quest for #1. Roger will be 155 points behind.

Thanks El Dude! So, there is a reasonable likelihood Roger reaches number one sometime this Spring. Much will depend on the Sunshine Double me thinks.

That's the daunting challenge for "gramps;" needing to repeat in IW & Miami! I think it would prove my point that the rest of the tour is gutless to allow this kind of success from an aging GOAT! The players have the ability and talent, but their brains are on idle, just bashing the ball instead of playing smartly! Everyone's breaking down due to the stress they're putting on their bodies, but Roger's just more intelligent and knows his limitations! No one will last as long again at the top of their game like this with what I've been seeing these last several years! :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:

Use the Schwartz!

Some interesting names on that list. Mannarino is one of those players who seems like he's always around...it is almost surprising he hasn't been in the top 20 (yet).

Sam Querrey has the dubious honor of arguably being the third greatest player born in the year 1987. A very distant third, that is. His only real competition is Fabio Fognini.

Mannarino has snuck up on a lot of people, like Schwartzman. 1987...Djokovic and Murray?

Well you would think Nadal would do better than last year in the U.S series Montreal, CMS and still have a awesome clay court season. This is Nadal best ever chance to go back to back end year 1NO

There is a new #1!:good:

It's gotta be killin' Rafa that he just can't seem to hold onto the #1 ranking for any length of time! So much for GOATdom when it comes to him! Roger's taking it out of reach for just about anyone except Nole, but he has to come back strong and be the last man standing after Fedal retires! :banghead: :help:

Not, really because Nadal just keeps getting Number one back, also 2010/11 he was number one for year, can just get it back at India wells.

With Rotterdam win, Roger's lead over Rafa is 345. He has 45 points to defend in Dubai. Assuming he does not play in Dubai, his lead would come down to 300. However, Rafa is defending 300 in Acapulco and so his lead will really be 600. So, even if Rafa manages to show up and win in Acapulco (while Fed skips Dubai), Fed will still be ranked #1 going into IW. So, the #1 ranking will last for at least four weeks (as they don't update the rankings in the middle of IW or M tournaments).

And unless he completely bombs out at the Sunshine Double AND Rafa wins every big clay title, Roger will regain #1 again sometime in clay season, even if he doesn't play at all.

Or to put numbers do it, if we take all points off from now through clay season--so going into grass season--Roger has 8060 "protected" points to Rafa's 4090. That means for Rafa to be #1 going into grass season, he has to out-play Roger by almost 4,000 points.

Rafa really lost his #1 ranking because of injury unfortunately history repeats

Well the whole world has been taught "any loss" by Rafa has to be something other than getting beat; injury, personal strife, food poisoning, etc.! I've never had much respect for the guy since he can't seem to accept losing a match without him or one of his handlers making excuses for him! :banghead:  :rip:
