Wow, this era was weaker than I thought! What a pathetic list of players who've been around for years and not making any mark except a "highlight reel" of fantastic points! That didn't get them a victory over a top player to win a major or even a Masters 1000 except JWS! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy: :cover

What in terms of French players?

As good as all of them have shown themselves to be; haven't won much! Tsonga picked up a Masters several years ago, but the rest are just on the rankings with little to nothing to show for it! I remember JW more for his loss in Paris against Nole in the QF of the FO; had 4 MP's and blew it; surrendering the 5th 6-1! I was done with him and the rest of the frogs! Love their style, but all are "mental" it seems! :cover :nono

They certainly are on the eccentric side! Don't forget that Tsonga actually won two Masters, Paris a long time ago and Canada just a couple of years ago where he actually beat Djokovic, Murray and Federer in a single tournament. Still a lot of untapped potential between them though, especially Monfils given the excitement surrounding him as a junior.

I was away for vacation so I did not post the new career highs on Monday.
Here they are:

New career highs Nov. 7, 2016:

1. Andy Murray 29y
6. Gael Monfils 30y
7. Marin Cilic 28y
15. Lucas Pouille 22y
30. Pablo Carreno Busta 25y
52. Karen Khachanov 20y
82. Jordan Thompson 22y

New career highs on November 14, 2016:

55. Facundo Bagnis 26y
77. Adam Pavlasek 22y
81. Jordan Thompson 22y
98. Daniil Medvedev (RUS) 20y

Bagnis is now ranked 3 among the many Argentinians on Tour.
I think he is currently the most successful player on the challenger tour with 4 titles this year.
Pavlasek and Thompson are second and third ranked behind Pouille, among those players who were born in 1994.
Medvedev is yet another Russian born 1996, who makes the top 100, behind Khachanov.

Wow! So Andy could really become number 1 if he wins Paris? It would be tragic if he doesn't get there at some point in his career. Hope he finally nails it down. Probably won't be for long, but who cares! He just needs to be there at least once

That's how I see it. I like to spread the love.

For the moment, at least, the Murray brothers become the first siblings to hold #1 in singles and part of a doubles team simultaneously. The Williams Sisters came close a few years back, when Serena was #1, and the sisters, as a team, got to #2.

New career high Nov. 21, 2016:

3. Milos Raonic 25y
6. Marin Cilic 28y
52. Diego Schwartzman 24y
68. Gerald Melzer 26y
76. Adam Pavlasek 22y
80. Jordan Thompson 22y

I find it interesting that when Marin Cilic won the USO two years ago, he did not make it higher than #8, this year when he wins a master (Cincy) he manages to reach #6.

I know this has been touched on perhaps, but is it a rare occurrence for the #1 player to beat the #6, then #5, #4, #3 then #2 in that order?

Granted that ranking only occurred after the end of the event but still seems odd that it would transpire that way.

Also interested in the rise of G. Melzer - Another example of a tennis sibling reaching career highs. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw Austria threaten at the Davis Cup in the next couple of years as well

el murro looks to be settling into a decent run as world no1 rank. :good:
well deserved too, more than 11years after his atp tour debut (Barcelona spring2005).

with Djokovic 600plus rank pts behind after next weeks dc pts are off murrays tally and also defending 250/2000/1000/1000 at least upto and inc Miami masters..andy should be ok until next summer.before things might get close again prob.

Well, that is because he spent half of the year in Jail due to consuming illegal cough syrup. :cover

The ATP tour announced earlier this week that for the first time in its 44-year rankings history, 10 different countries are represented in the year-end Top 10. Those nations are Scotland (Andy Murray); Serbia (Novak Djokovic); Canada (Milos Raonic); Switzerland (Stan Wawrinka); Japan (Kei Nishikori); Croatia (Marin Cilic); France (Gael Monfils); Austria (Dominic Thiem); Spain (Rafael Nadal) and the Czech Republic (Tomas Berdych).

Finally got Ferrer out of there! Just need to push Berdych and Nadal off the elite table and I'll be happy! They're starting to remind me of players from past eras who need to embarrass themselves before leaving the tour; sans Connors who had no shame! Federer's closing in on Jimmy's lack of a life and just can't let it go! :nono :dodgy: :cover

Thanks. It just shows the globalization of the sport, and where are those days when I grew up, when USA was dominating this sport?

Federer continues playing. You have an issue. He signs up for IPTL, you have an issue. I don't understand why you should have issues. He is there for his own satisfaction and for his fans. I don't think others should have an issue with it. He is doing it for us. Others have no business with it.

What people don't understand is he is playing for the love of the sport; because he loves playing. Its one of the main reasons. He wants to be doing what he has done so much in his life, to be on the coveted ATP tour trying to get results in spite of challenges. Even with a disadvantageous position on the rankings, he is going to try making a comeback and be a factor at grand slams. Roger is a fighter and some people never understand this.

Fiero's nuts, shivashish. According to him, Roger "embarrassed himself" in 2015 when he won six titles, when 63-11, and finished #3.

Hmmm, I don't remember seeing anything specifying 2015! You read something in a post that doesn't exist genius! Just because he took a few lower level titles against a schlock men's tour means nothing; Federer is still taking up space and dominating players who have shortcomings when it comes to finishing off a top tier player! I've said it before if you remember; in figure skating, the same thing went on with the ladies when Michelle Kwan just kept hanging on! She was unable to win anything big either, but she psychologically held back the rest of the skaters who revered her! Is that too much for you to understand what I'm talking about? If not, you should be embarrassed for being that slow! :puzzled :nono :dodgy: :cover

Don't be so sensitive, Fiero. Anyhow, I don't see how Roger is holding back anyone. That seems like a dubious hypothesis. If anything he is an inspiration, or a challenge to be overcome. How awesome is it for Alexander Zverev, that he gets to play Roger Federer? Pretty soon we're going to see Roger facing guys that were born after he started the pro tour, back in 1998.

And that's the point: Even if he couldn't scratch the top 10, he'd still be boon to the sport. But he's still better than almost every player on tour. He is a player who will be starting his twentieth year on tour, one of the greatest who has ever lived, and still better than all but a few. He's not embarrassing himself. You're embarrassing yourself by constantly bashing him and asking him to retire.

Nothing is granted to you. Wins have to be earned no matter who one is up against. Top 10 is never easy. He has had to go through them every year to achieve anything. The Raonics and Nishikoris of this world are giant killers on the big stages who you have to beat.

He defeated Djokovic in two of his title wins, that is, in the final. He won Instanbul on clay which isn't his best surface. He defeated Nadal for the first time in 3-4 years or something. He reached two slam finals for the first time in 6 years. And he would lose them to none other than the best player in the world putting up a good fight in both too. That's not embarrassing. Not even lacklustre.

Er Fiero, you know Roger is playing the same guys as Novak, right? So the whole dominating nobodies argument applies to Novak as well. Hardly the first time pointing this out but doesn't seem to have sunk in yet :p
