Wow, career high for a 36-year old.

Zverev just keeps climbing. It seems like a top 20 year-end ranking is likely. He's #18 in the race rankings.

Zverev still struggles mentally, that is not surprising, considering how young he is.
His loss against Cervantes in Hamburg can be attributed to that, beside the MP against Nadal.
In Hamburg, he was the poster player of the event, being his home town as well. Probably it ws too much pressure to handle it.

I think I was the only person who predicted that he would be top 20 by the end of the year. As for the most vs Rafa, you need to let that go, every player is capable of loosing Mp against anyone.

Barking at the wrong tree, I just made a comment about Zverev and his mental toughness status in that match. I personally did not care if he did not manage to beat Rafa.

I mention his name a lot less than others do, mainly because I do not care about him. It is just your impression I do, because you are overly sensitive.

Wait, does herios have something against Zverev? Did I miss something?

Anyhow, AntiPusher, I think I predicted that Zverev might challenge for the top 20, but am not sure. I at least said he'd make it into the top 40. I'd say he's doing slightly better than I predicted, which I'm happy with. In my mind he's the most promising young player in the sport, in terms of combining upside and how far he's actually come (there are other players with as much or even more upside, and some young guns who have climbed higher--but Zverev has the best combination of both, so in my view is the overall best prospect for next great player).

Zverev is the "chosen one" which the majority of us tennis enthusiasts have already anointed him. No disagreement here.

Well to be honest, I don't know if he's going to be a true all-time great, but I do think he has the best shot of it right now, out of the known choices. But Fritz, Shapovalov, and/or Aliassime could eventually be greater...Zverev is just further along.

I've also floated the idea that with "Next Gen" we might see several multi-Slam winners, but no clear dominant player. Of course we won't know for some years yet.

New career high on Oct. 17, 2016:

13. Roberto Bautista-Agut 28y
20. Alexander Zverev 19y
43. Kyle Edmund 21y
69. Gerald Melzer 26y
79. Konstantin Kravchuk 31y
87. Renzo Olivo 24y

Roberto Bautista Agut, a late bloomer manages a new career high on the strength of his first ATP Master final.
A new milestone for Sasha Zverev to crack the top 20. Kravchuk and Olivo won challenger titles last week, moving up nicely also in the rankings.

I do not have anything against Zverev at all, but that does not mean I am joining the bandwagon either.
I there really a need to have a "chosen one"??
I better like to see field of equal opportunities where the players can make a case for themselves, some sooner other a little later.
And those who will emerge as the leaders will have their fan base formed no question about that.

Carreno Busta keeps creeping up. I could see him slipping into the top 20, but not the top 10, maybe maxing out in the #15-20 range.

Edmund also is a stealth riser and is currently the third highest ranked player age 21 and under, after Kyrgios and Zverev. He doesn't seem to get as much accolades but is on a similar rankings trajectory as Pouille and Thiem, maybe even slightly quicker.

Edmund has been remarkable, actually. It's great to see, too. Usually he'd be grouped in with a bunch of chinless Brits who struggle vainly in the Wimbledon first round, having gotten a wild card. Sue Barker would smile grimly as she gave the news about another plucky Brit, whose father was a member of the club, and whose mother bakes fabulous creme tarts.

But this kid is more than plucky, and if he continues, he'll be top 20 this time next year...

What is remarkable about Carreno-Busta is that he came up through the rankings as almost exclusively a clay court specialist.
Then his rise stalled for a few years mainly because he was unsuccessful on the faster courts where the majority of the events are played.
But his first ATP titles came on HC this year therefore the subsequent rising. So I back up El Dude here, and say a top 20 position later in his carer will be happening.
