interesting words by Fibak:

“During the match, the thought that kept coming to my mind was that I was watching a genius,” said Wojtek Fibak, the former Polish player hired by Djokovic as a coaching consultant. “It’s like Chopin who was born to compose music. Nadal was born to win tennis matches.”

let it be known here and now that general death is seldom wrong with the slams predictions.

now who wants to know who is going to win the Australian open?

Before the tournament started you claimed Andy Murray was by far the favourite and would defend his title here.

RE: Rafael Nadal : The Relentless Match Winning Machine

nadal changed the equation in a matter of 2 weeks.

I posted right here that it was between andy and nadal.

I further added that I would go with nadal if the andy landed in the same 1/2 as nole.

I eliminated nole from the equation long ago but before montreal and cinci, I had andy murray winning the open.

and so did lendl and Sampras and countless others.

Murray is the perfect friend for Nadal. Murray is good enough to eliminate Djokovic, but not good enough to beat Nadal. Nadal has won their last 4 slam meetings - and only one of those was at Roland Garros. And Nadal wasn't actually at his best mentally in 2011, but still beat Murray at 3 slams.

Murray winning the 2012 US Open didn't help him mentally. Murray looked extremely fragile in 2013 Australia. Murray won 2013 Wimbledon, but Djokovic wasn't a test. Murray looked horrible at 2013 US Open. I'm obviously not sold on Murray, but he's good enough to eliminate Djokovic, hence the perfect friend for Nadal.

Nadal ripped Djokovic's heart out at Roland Garros this year. Roland Garros was Djokovic's top priority of 2013. Djokovic's deceased coach (known as his surrogate grandmother) had specifically asked for the Roland Garros trophy. Djokovic led 4-2 in the 5th set. He wasn't all there mentally at Wimbledon, but great effort to reach the final (after beating the always mentally fragile - versus the elite - Del Potro). His legs weren't all there, and neither was his mind. I knew the tragic loss at Roland Garros would have an impact at Wimbledon. A lot of sudden mental tests for a guy in mourning.

Doesn't make the previous post any less stupid.

13 is a good number for nadal. he really needed to hit that by 27 if he was to entertain more quests.

now he too can be said to be playing for history.

it adds legitimate fuel to his fire. I know he said that calendar year grand slam is impossible today but at least he is thinking about it.

it is sounding more and more like a man who is ready for more quests and a nice slice of history of his own.

RE: Rafael Nadal : The Relentless Match Winning Machine

Rafael Nadal has been the best player during 2013.
Nobody around could beat him even on his worst surface.

But he's likely won his last major off clay.
And he might jeopardize an easy 2 more wins at Roland Garros that would put him past Sampras.
The man cannot resist getting on the hard courts.

He'll be back to Poker, Golf, and Fishing soon. Book it.

he should target RG and Wimbledon next.

that is the safe passage. it ensures longevity in the sport and most likely 4-5 more slams.

Wimbledon and RG are far more prestigious anyway.

Hmm, the RG-Wimbledon double is a young man's accomplishment and Nadal has done it twice.

He's only one man.

When are they planning to give an additional week between RG and Wimbledon? 2015 or 2016?

Respectfully,
masterclass

general masterclass the invincible spot on as usual.

massive and insatiable infatuation with hard courts is risky at best given his history with the knee issues.

I think this is a bit of an unfounded statement. Why does he not have a good chance at say, the Australian Open next year?

Probably because resisting hard courts means playing 3 months per year only. Never mind the fact that the statement isn't necessarily true, since he skipped Miami, and thus, "resisted" it.

RE: Rafael Nadal : The Relentless Match Winning Machine

he had an indoor hard court built for himself in Mallorca.

he spends quite a bit of time on it.

he was even training on this hard court just before Wimbledon.

looks like broken one is liking nadal's chances at the Australian open but just does not have guts to actually make the prediction.

also I am still waiting to see his post where he predicts that nadal would win cinci.

this is supposed to be right after he picked nadal to fail against nole in Montreal.

RE: Rafael Nadal : The Relentless Match Winning Machine

Of course Nadal has a very big shot at winning the AO. Why wouldn't he? He's great on slow/medium hardcourts and in this year's AO it was the opposite of the current state of affairs: that is Djokovic wasn't the one leading who bottled it and lost the lead and subsequently the match. It was Nadal who was up 4-2 in the 5th set and that missed shot at 4-2 30-15 changed it all. One point can completely change a match and it did there, but even so he was ahead in that final then so I see him as very much one of the favourites there, especially given the others poor form and his outstanding form. Speaking of one point changing whole matches...who can forget Fed v Haas RG 2009, Fed down 2 sets to 0, 4-4 30-30 and Fed gets the break and runs away with the next 3 sets.

Anyway the AO should be great, hoping we finally see Andy v Rafa at a slam as it's been quite a while and we'll also have Tsonga back, Nalbandian (?) in possibly one of his final seasons unfortunately, Fed looking to erase the crapfest that was 2013, JJ looking to make an impression, Wawrinka looking to go one further than last AO and hopefully Robin Soderling making a return to the slams. He'll surely get a wild card entry there. Bring it on.
