Who's your vote for best drummer?
There are so many good drummers,

I like Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy for example, he's good at the jazzy stuff and technical brutality too:)

As a drummer myself, growing up I was influenced a lot by guys like Dave Weckl, Gregg Bisonette, Simon Phillips. Today, guys like Mike Mangini , Benny Grebb and Thomas Lang impress me a lot.
Here is a nice solo from Lang...

Drummers? It depends on the kind of drumming. My man, Levon, was a very influential and skillful drummer--plus, he was the precursor to drummer/lead singers like Don Henly and Dave Grohl (I don't really count Ringo as much, as he sang relatively little whereas Levon and Don were the most recognizable voices of their respective groups). Keith Moon and Neil Peart (the The Who and Rush) were animals of drum set and trailblazers, but many others from many groups of the hard metal variety can probably play as fast and as hard as those two. In jazz, I loved Steve Gadd and Lenny White--both were stupendous drummers with great rhythm and feel.

Steve Gadd! Great choice. I looked on YouTube to see if I could find a video of him playing Aja, but nothing stood out. However, I did find this video of an amateur playing along with the title track. It's fun.

Here's the original:

And here's a clip of Gadd talking about it:

The greatness of Moon had to do with his style in general, and his atypical approach, not just how fast or hard he could beat the drums. That's why I like the two documentaries I linked to above. A couple of drummers discuss how Moon didn't just keep the beat; he had his own unique style.

Moon and the Who really wasn't my type of music but I heard he was the man. For my money, I would go with Crem Burke 0f Blondie. Crem is a pure madman. take a look at his best work in the hit "Dreaming". If there have been a better drum solo, please tell me.

I listen to tons of different stuff but when it comes to favourite drummers most would be metal drummers: Dave Lombardo, Raymond Herrera, Paul Bostaph.

Dave Lombardo on drums in this.

Thanks for all those nice drum vids:cool:

I like the drumming in this song, it gets especially tricky after the Meshuggah-like part:D

Where does Phil Collins rank as a drummer? I remember he drummed for Genesis before taking over the vocals.

I would love to know what it's like to be that coordinated and talented, if even for five minutes.

I don't know how music critics would rank him, but I love him. After Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Collins became lead singer, the focus was shifted away from his drumming, so I think he's been a bit ignored.

Any Jam (or Paul Weller) fans?

The Jam -- has there ever been a more enigmatic band for US audiences? I know they were HUGE in the UK, but they absolutely failed to translate to success in the States. Every few years I'll listen to one of their two albums I own -- "All Mods Cons" and "Sound Affects" -- and I still don't get it.

And now the blasphemy: for me, the Style Council's "Cafe Bleu" is a desert island disc. I know, I know. You don't have to say anything else. ;)
