^ Yep. It's a sad trend that many successful foreign filmmakers lose their touch in Hollywood. but his Hong Kong stuff is great.

As much flack as they cop, I still love JCVD's 90/00s martial art works like The Quest, In Hell, etc.

Yup, likewise. The Quest and In Hell were both enjoyable. I actually thought Wake of death was a decent Van Damme film too for a more recent one (2004). Pretty violent too. Double Impact and Double Team were great too. I really liked the very late 80s/mid 90s stuff with Matthias Hues as well. The guy was a total beast at the height of his film career. 6'5", 250lbs and built like a brick $h1thouse with a good deal of help from Mr. Needle no doubt  Outside of his films where he's the main star I guess Dark Angel with Dolph Lundgren was his most famous role. He was cool in that. "I come in peace". Incidentally that was the dumb name they gave Dark Angel in the US.

Steroids? What steroids? :D

^ He was from Kickboxer 2, yeah? No doubt he was ripped

Agreed all the JCVD flicks. I've seen most of his work and still find them endlessly entertaining. JCVD (2008) is a legitimately great film, though.

Welcome to the Jungle I have yet to see. One of his few comedy roles. It's been met with expectedly negative reception, but I'll give it a go someday.

Yeah, he was in Kickboxer 2 very briefly and usually even lower grade stuff than that but a great martial artist :) Especially when you consider how big he was back then.

I love old Bob! Have hundreds of bootlegs, and all the released stuff. There isn't a period of his career that isn't a notch or two above everybody road: the 80's, the gospel albums, the late 60's, it's all great. Probably the greatest genuine genius of song, a lyricist of incomparable depth and beauty.

Lately been hooked on ModBob, anything from Time out of Mind to Tempest.

You're a fan, buddy? I'm going to see him in Dublin in July. Myself and my pal gonna play guess the song during the show! :snigger

Seeing Dylan live? Awesome, man. Yeah, I am a fan - have been for many years now. At his peak, he was arguably one of the greatest songwriters ever IMO. So much profundity to his work - a real figurehead to the counterculture movement, and many of his songs feel just as - if not moreso - socially pertinent today than they were upon their releases. He was really ahead of his time.

I don't own all of his work like you do, though. You seem to be a huge fan which is great! What do you think of his 2000s works?

I love his late work, Love & Theft maybe being my favourite. He's become archivist, troubadour, poser/geezer. But he's writing great songs and singing them in that old cracked voice. I thought Tempest was a magnificent record, even the corny title song. I know people insult his method of referring to other songs, books, etc, but the man knows they know, he's not pulling a fast one, he's actually pointing up a much older tradition of creativity than even himself.

It's only recently I fully appreciate Modern Times. Think Nettie Moore is maybe one of the greatest songs he'll ever write. Long may he reign!

T.S. Eliot: "One of the surest tests [of the superiority or inferiority of a poet] is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest."

Does anyone here like/used to like wrestling? Man, I was watching some clips from the WWF/WCW Monday Night War days, and boy, so much fun. Steve Austin, The Rock, Kurt Angle, NWO, Benoit, Kane, McMahon, Bischoff, you name it... So many characters, so much creativity, so much energy.

Hell, the WWE was a lot of fun in the mid 2000s, too - Lesnar, heel Cena, JBL, hot divas, etc. Shame it's so insipid now. That's what happens when you have no competition.
