Federer has a chance to be no1 rank early next year but that isn't YE no1 so I won't mention it.

Well, he has a final in Brisbane and a semi in Oz`to defend, so it won't be easy to gain too much there...

His best chance is right after Indian Wells/Miami. After RG is possible too.

New here, just giving my two cents. Djokovic undoubtedly deserves it. Two grand slam finals, one of which he won, arguably the biggest title in tennis. If Federer wins,it'll be a complete Hingis 2000, Davvenport 2004 or Jankovic 2008 (three players I love actually, but they didn't deserve their ranking that year, I don't care how the point system works). I heard ALL year how amazing Federer was doing yet he continually lost big matches. I love Federer as a person, but I hate how the tennis media is so biased towards him.

^Welcome on board Eboe89 :) Personally I don't set too much store in YE#1. Getting to the ranking at any point is what counts in my view, it's not clear to me that having it at a specific point in time has any greater value than another. The way I see it, the ranking is not supposed to tell you who has had the best highlights over a 12 month period, it tells you who has been the most consistently strong over that period. If I had any issues with the ranking system at the moment it would be that it's already too weighted in favour of the slams. On balance it seems to be just about right, so in my view if Federer were to get YE#1 it's because he earned it. But that would have nothing to do with the fact that we all think that Novak has had a better year. Perhaps the ATP should come up with an MVP award that could help make the distinction, but it's unfair to question how deserving a player is in attaining the ranking if they haven't played materially more tournaments than his peers. It's not like Federer has done a Wozniacki or Safina and played a huge number of tournaments to acquire ranking points. Indeed that's exactly why he would deserve it, if he got it. But as I said, I bet he would trade YE#1 for the Wimbledon title! :)

Not theoretically, but for all practical purposes.

If Fed loses one RR match, Novak can mathematically (i.e, with 100% certainity) clinch
YE #1 with just two RR wins. He does not need three RR wins and neither does he need to
reach SF.

WTF (9 November):

1. Novak Djokovic (RR+0) 9860
2. Roger Federer (RR+1) 8900

Novak leads by 960 points.

Novak needs 3 victories in London to win the race.

He plays tomorrow.

While three wins will do, Novak does not need three wins for YE #1. Two wins would do too,
as long as one of them is an SF win. It is possible to reach SF with just one RR win.

Of course, the chances that Novak loses two RR matches is next to nil.

There was an event almost 40 years ago; the players were so evenly matched that a group had three (1-3) records with Roscoe Tanner being one of them! He ended up losing in the final in 5 sets to Connors; TB at 5 all! I think it was in Hawaii; pretty sure I posted somewhere about the event! :dodgy:

We know Berdych can't beat Novak. So, all hopes now rest on Stan.

Man, Please help fellow Swiss.:please:

I think you are hoping Stan beats Nole and finishes 1st in the group. Roger goes 3:0 and faces Nole in the semi and then beats him, then wins the title undefeated. I think that is your best scenario? Man you are going to sweat for 5-6 more days:laydownlaughing unless Roger loses tomorrow. I think for your sake, that's what should happen.:snigger

Don't attempt to read my mind. I have even more devious designs.

I actually want Novak to win his group and Roger to win his group too. I would like Kei to finish second
and then finish Nole in SF. :devil Then Fed should defeat Kei in the finals and then claim YE #1.

Didn't you read the following article on how Guerten becam YE #1 in 2000 . Guerten and Safin were the
contenders. Safin needed to lose one RR match and then needed to lose SF and Guerten
needed to win it all. It all happened. Andre defeated Safin in one SF and Guerten defeated
Pete in another SF and then Guerten defeated Andre in the finals to claim YE #1.
