At the moment,USTA plans to hold US Open as scheduled.
Qualies Aug 24-28
Main Draw Aug 31-Sept 13
Main Draw Ceremony Aug 27
Arthur Ash Kids Day Aug 29
USTA is carefully monitoring the environment surrounding COVID19 pandemic and is preparing for all contingencies.
For what it's worth, I heard that Major League Baseball is going to see what they can do about having a season, which might tell us about chances for the USO, if they can pull it off, at all. I think they're talking about playing to empty stadiums. Anyway, but baseball and tennis are naturally more "socially distanced" than, say, basketball, so that gives us some hope. :)

Just saw a tweet from Christopher Clarey,

USTA CEO Mike Dowse says 'nothing is off the table' in terms of US Open planning but says playing the event without spectators is a 'highly unlikely scenario'.Not in the spirit of a celebration of tennis and also could still be a medical risk for staff, officials and players.

I got to wondering, what sports wouldn't suffer as much without spectators ? Perhaps race car driving, where the drivers are hermetically cut off from the crowd by their engines , or cross country skiing, or marathon running where the athletes are battling their own internal endurance limits, etc but even then the celebratory feels after victories in those sports would be strange, I would think. After all, those sports also have their rabid fans. Would a great Birdie or Eagle in golf be the same without a crowd roaring it's approval?

OF course there are far more pressing issues in the world today, but TBH, while technically possible, hosting major sporting events without spectators dilutes the atmosphere to the point where it's negligible as sport. No adrenaline rush from the crowd for or against you, no roar from fans , no electricity in the air, nothing, nada, zilch. It's a pale copy carbon of what sports is, the heady mix of tension, pressure and expectations of both athletes and their fans.

In our country our Rugby League which only completed 2 rounds then had to be stopped due to the virus, played without spectators.,though was still televised on TV,my husband a mad fan of league, still swore at the umpire and the players at times lol!
The league is trying to restart the competition in May,will play without spectators,if they have to, or allowed to restart..From my point of view it was strange to see them playing with no fans,no atmosphere at all. This is a highly contact sport as well, personally I feel it should wait in these uncertain times.

Moxie,

I read an article in the NY Times from Christopher Clarey that the USTA plans a $15 million Bailout for Various Tennis Groups,
I am going to pose a hypothetical question to you,I do not think the US Open can afford to go ahead without paying fans,I know the US Open is 4 months away, still I am reading that NYC is still one of the major countries in the world that the death rate is still high. The UTSA is still on track to make an announcement regarding the summer HC season,, on June 1.The WTA has cancelled their event in Montreal due to the area banning public events, though the ATP at present is still going ahead in Toronto.BTW I usually dont deal in hypotheticals, though at present we do live in uncertain times.

I don't know for certain how their revenue stream works, but even without paying fans, don't you think they make a lot of money from TV? Obviously none of us has any idea if the USO can be pulled off by August. Maybe this is when Larry Ellison gets his chance to hold the USO in Indian Wells.

Cycling can suffer, millions of people cover Tour de France, Giro di Italia and Vuelta Espana by the road, not to mention TV. They good date on UCI timetable (just postponed). So even Espana will have grand tour, even it was hit so hard with Corona.

I suppose it depends on how many tv channel's cover the US Open, still I would imagine they need 'bums on seats'.
Quite frankly that is not a bad idea that Larry Elison could hold the USO in Indian Wells.

Interesting concept although the mayor of Los Angles has ban large sports gatherings until 2021

I mentioned this possibility earlier, however Indians Wells covers an area of Southern Cal with a lot of wealthy retired or second home residents, lawsuits and litigation could be looming if there is still viable COVID concern. Did I mention alot of retired lawyers down there?

With RG and USO still possible for this year, here are the tallies for those 2 slams:

Nadal - 12 + 4 = 16
Federer - 1 + 5 = 6
Djokovic - 1 + 3 = 4

Basically both Federer and Djokovic wouldn’t mind if these slams get cancelled while for the clear favorite GOATdal it would be a huge loss.

Novak and Roger have more important things to do. Care about their families.
Nadal can focus on his neurotics what clearly helped him through his career. Every autistic person has at least one thing he can do very well.

What sentimental crap. Roger and Novak are better and more selfless people because they have children? Bullshit. They spent whatever time it took to create those children, but it doesn't mean that they spend particular time taking care of them. That's what the money and wives are for.

First of all , it was an answer to a troll, not people like you.

second: what you wrote from your 4th sentence, Did not fit 1 % into the picture i have from you. You really have that kind of view on these things?
sure no one of us can know whats really truth.

third: i should have written They theoretically should have more important things to do.

you can call it bullshit and sentimental, for me personally it’s the most important. Main reason to me to leave the clinical work and move to private office.

i wish you a good night.
now I have to do some “bullshit” and pimp up my backyard and do the daily workout with my kids for school and training.

like always I wish you the best

The 'troll' made a tennis comment. You dragged in the sentiment and the kids, and made the implication that Nadal has more time on his hands. It was totally below the belt and you deserved my retort. Don't go "holier than thou" on me. You trash-talk all the time, so don't get squishy when you get push-back.

Ah you call that a comment. Ok.
For you saint it is trash talk, for me it is adapting to the level of the others.
Let me say, you sit on a high horse Moxie. You feel the need to defend other Nadal “fans” despite being idiots and freaks. Fine.
